I have pursued other careers: court reporter, transcriber, executive secretary, medical transcriptionst, legal secretary/assistant, law enforcement. Even years ago, the snarky disrespectful attitudes of students and the games playing idiocy and discriminatory favoritism of education supervisors and administrators are enough to wear you out and dim your enthusiasm. From what I see now of the enormous number of teachers leaving teaching, and some of these teachers are long-time talented teachers, the working conditions, students’ disrespect and unwillingness to learn, and lack of support for teachers have only gotten worse, far worse.

Eytan Kollin I'm after writing a sci fi novel this year. Any advice on publishing?
@wambutu76796 жыл бұрын
daveeol1987, Congrats on writing your novel sir. There are few feelings in the world to compare to printing out your first manuscript and holding it in your hands. That being said don't send it into the publisher until you 1) have a critical yet honest ACQUAINTANCE read your novel. It can't be friend or family. Trade yard work or tutoring if you have to but find that person or better yet two. 2) LISTEN TO THEM! You don't have follow all their suggestions but listen and only ignore them after you have rebutted the advice within logic. Not easy as us writers tend to pretty emotional about our babies. 3) Copy edit your book for EVERY typo, grammar error and mistake possible. I can't stress this enough. You and your friends and family may be impressed by the brilliance of your prose but an editor will only see the errors which will RIP them out of your story. That happens two or three times in your first chapter and they have already discarded your years of hard work for the next dream on the towering list of manuscripts they have to get through before they can get lunch. Do NOT give them that excuse. Creatives tend to not care about the details because they are creative. But the ones pushing judgment on your book are NOT creatives in that sense. They are editors because they are not creatives. If they were they would be authors. But do not discount them. They have a valuable skill set and they want to make money and gain fame and the way they do that is to put forward authors who can sell. Some play politics or social justice games but most just want to find good books to publish. But they tend to be detailed oriented people who nowadays have little tolerance for those who can't even be bothered to learn the rules of grammar. Once you're famous you can submit your manuscripts on rolls of paper towels written with a quill. But until then make their first impression of your work bullet proof. Hope that helps.

I did 5 years in Qingdao at a California based international school chain. It’s good for a few years to make serious cash. However, it is not sustainable as a long term career. Z Visas are only for 1 year at a time. Unless you pay cash, you can’t own a home, and even if you do pay cash, what you get is basically a condo. Transferring money out of China is neigh impossible. There is little protection if you job decides to sack you or someone tries scamming you. Internet is heavily censored. Air is polluted. The tap water is not even safe for pets to drink. Even buying a car and getting a drivers license is a headache.

This is my 6th year of teaching - I have worked in several schools over those years. I have my accreditation, have a Cert 3 in Ageing, Home and Community Care, I also write short stories and I've just been accepted into an Honours study in medieval history. I hope to move onto a PhD in this topic afterwards and become a medieval history lecturer. If that doesn't work out, I will look into editing. Either way, my mind is very firmly made up - after this year, with careful financial planning, I am planning to return to casual/temporary work. I do not regret the time I've spent teaching - but after last year, I have come to realise that the job is not worth the toll it has taken on my mental and emotional health over the last couple of years.

I am 52 with two bachelors unfortunately with History and Elementary Education. I also have a strong background in ESOL. Besides teaching in the USA for so many years, I taught for years too in Italy, Ireland and England. What can I do next? If I want to get out of teaching. I love travel and history. I would like a change but do not want to go back to school but I would not mind training for something else. I knew people in their 50s 60s who got their masters etc and nothing changed in their life. I knew people with bachelors and less and made changes and have done well with changing. I was able to teach in Europe with claiming citizenship of Ireland and worked in England for years because being like a citizen of Ireland and moving to the UK is like moving from one state to the other. I also worked in Italy too because of the EU for years. Wonderful but teaching there was great but low pay so you would have to budget especially if you want to travel around.

She prepared in home her plans for teaching, she can't spend time with her own kids, working on lessons that students won't appreciate. I am so sad watching her driving to a place where she will be disrespected, and called the "B" word just for asking students to pay attention. The schools want my mom to be God and control what the whole government can't. My mom is a person with feelings, emotions, and family, she deserves to be happy and respected like everybody else! if a secretary in a company is called by her boss B or F or the N-word because he is rude, are you going to educate the secretary to learn relational skills to make him happy and blame her for causing that? does she have to go to level 5 to keep her job or lose it? so you will train her to accept her domination and misery??
