I like what you did however you have a large safety issue with the plugs used outside the trailer. The extension cord should not have two male ends as a person could unplug from the trailer and the end would still be hot. You should have put a male end on the trailer and left the extension cord as is.

Your end product is dangerous. You created a double end male power chord that will have exposed hot prongs if plugged into power source at one end and left exposed at the other. A better method would be to use a standard extension chord that would plug into a male adapter at the trailer.

As I told someone else you can buy double male cords just for purposes such as that and or connecting generators.

Best to use a NEMA 3R rated enclosure with a sealed Bell Box cover for outdoor use. The ground wire also has to be bonded inside the enclosure along with the outlet. As that trailer is metal. I would also add a GFCI receptacle or breaker to prevent getting killed. That cord is going to get someone killed as well. You have the makings of a hot expose male connector. Get a damn twist lock 20 amp.

I'd a put a box in for the outside receptacle as well instead of taping it. Just like the one on the inside. and also they make a male connector for the purpose you used the outside receptacle for too. But good video though.

I am converting my trailer into a toy hauler similar to what you did. On the interior outlets, did you add thickness to your wall studs to fit the electrical outlet box in there or was it already thick enough. I was looking at mine and it seems like it is going to be too thin but I haven't cut into it or anything because I don't want to put a hole in my wall for nothing.

How do you have two separate power inlets going into one breaker box? I am doing something similar but with inlets. No idea how they are to use the same breaker box without causing issues.

Wouldn't a power strip plugged into an extension cord been easier? You'd get more outlets and you wouldn't have to cut that many holes in the trailer.

Hi , if I was going to install 3 fluorescent lights in a enclosed trailer would you recommend size 12/3 for lights and on a separate breaker and than use 10/3 for the rooftop a/c on another separate breaker ? Thx

I only have one question. If you're planning to have AC in the trailer. Are you going to repaint the trailer a lighter color so it doesn't absorb so much heat from the sunlight? Otherwise it seems like it might become a small oven even with the AC. Also, a lil blood in your projects just means a lil more of you in the outcome.

How deep is the blue plastic outlet box, since you were able to flush-mount it to the wall - but the only blue boxes I can find out my home depot are more than 2 3/4 inches. Is your wall that thick or is your blue box less than 2-3/4?

How does that a/c do in your trailer? I'm debating on a roof top or portable like you did. Also go to home depot and you can get the male end type outlet for your trailer, so you can plug a regular extension cord into it. No more potential to have a hot male end floating around! :)

If under 90 deg it does a great job.. 90-100 deg with a black trailer it is strained to keep it 80 inside.. parking in shade help.. i would suggest a bigger unit or twin units of you are in a hot summer.. Yeah im sure i could have made that plug safer.. but where is the fun in that

***** Thanks for the reply. I ended up getting a small (5x10) trailer with a Coleman Mach 13,500 btu A/C installed in the ceiling, and I used elastomeric roof paint to paint the roof white and after a couple of uses in the hot Florida summer this seems to be a really great setup. Even in the heat of the day the A/C will keep it cool and dry inside, even though the trailer is not insulated. I haven't tried it overnight yet, but during the day I'm very happy with it. I'm impressed with the A/C, it runs great on generator power and doesn't seem to require a whole lot to startup. It even started with my buddies Honda 2000 watt inverter generator (the little carry around model), but as soon as I turned the lights on inside the trailer the generator went into overload, but I'm completely impressed that the A/C started and ran with such a small generator! I use my 4000 watt generator and it runs it just great. My only complaint is low fan speed doesn't seem to be much lower than high fan speed on the A/C, so I'm not sure how that's going to work at night, but in the daytime we keep it on high and it's fantastic.

i would be cautious of running with a low power generator.. might burn up the compressor?? im glad you found something that works for you... I wanted a roof mount.. but they are more expensive.. let us know how it works at night..
@8180634
@8180634 10 жыл бұрын
Kraka069 Indeed the small generator was just an experiment to see if it was big enough. It ran fine and actually kept the voltage up perfectly until it overloaded, I was impressed with the generator, but it's definitely not big enough to use for this case. From memory, I believe the generator is rated 1600 watts continuous and 2000 watts peak, and the A/C required about 1500 watts to run (according to my kill-a-watt meter), so it was right at the limit of the generator. Turning on the lights in the trailer (about 200 watts) was the straw that broke the camels back.

there is only 1 leg...2 legs would be 220 ..2x 110 with a common nuetral...you used 12 gauge wire , if You use the full capacity of the outlets and turn on the lights You will be overloading the wires capacity, 10 gauge wire with a ground 10/3 minimum for this application also properly fused for saftey...not haten just saying be safe....

I'm new to this. Single mom and I may have a few " stupid" questions. I have a 16 ft covered trailer and I want to add power to it. I need to be able to have power without a generator or an outside power source. Could I use a car battery ?
@Krakology
@Krakology 7 жыл бұрын
what kind of power? what would you be powering ? do not put a battery inside that can produce fumes while charging. mount outside

Yes you can use your car battery with an ac/dc converter. Have plans on how to start car in case you drain it too low, jumper cables, extra charged battery etc.

People....do NOT do it this way. Sorry to say, but that extension with 2 male ends is completely wrong and dangerous. If your power source is plugged in at campsite box, the other end going into the trailer is now HOT and laying on the ground for someone to touch............dead dead dead they will be. The only safe way with your connection is to plug trailer 1st, then other end to power source. When unplugging, you do the reverse. I know from experience it's wrong.
