Bravo, I love this video. I once asked you if your brush was rubber or something. You told me no, that it was a rigger brush or a reg paint brush, I can't remember your exact words. But there it is; you flatten it with the thick paint to cause that flattened look to it. LOL The reason I had asked you that was because I had see some plastic or rubber gadgets at the art stores around here and I thought that maybe, where you live they had something with a light rubber on the end of a brush handle. LOL I love that you told us that secret. Thank you Michael James Smith. Your paintings are amazing, the detail is absolutely fantastic, every part of your painting looks so realistic. One time you were standing in front of one of your paintings while you were giving your intro to your video and I literally thought that you were outside; that's how real they look. I love your art and I love your videos, I love that you took that extra time to show us what those paint strokes look like on a separate white canvas ( that helps more than you could know) and I love that you share all that you share with us. Thank you so much for all of that, Thank you! thank you!! thank you!!!

I just took up painting for the first time a few months ago at my 55+ community, and I have been watching your videos nonstop. They are so very helpful! I found this video to be particularly helpful, since you so clearly explained not only what brush you used, but also how to use the brush, and the added bonus of showing us the type of mark it leaves (pun intended. lol) on a blank canvas. It was of great benefit! Thank you so much!!! Our teacher who is excellent, also loves your videos and is a paid subscriber to your online classes. By chance, do you have a KZbin video on painting pine trees on a distant mountain? It is a mountain that is distant enough not to show great detail, but close enough to distinguish that there are indeed pine trees on the mountain. I'm particularly interested in learning how to paint the sunlight side of the trees. This is the last thing I have left to do with my (first) painting. Unfortunately, I have to miss our last class with this painting, so I am going to try to do this at home. Thanks!

You way to paint is so amazing! You are a great master, with unbelievable patience and skill. I am a choreographer and ballet teacher and I have been watching your classes for almost two years, and now , after latest classes I started understand your uniqueness in full. I started learning painting two years ago, my wife thinks that I am too lazy, and she forced me to start to do something, like painting, frankly I was happy, because that was my dream from my childhood. I do acrillics, it is easier, faster, less doing all the preparations for the oil painting, which is an appear class not for me. I am 69, but I am getting deeper and deeper in painting, and understanding , that I will never be as strong as a professional artist, but anyway it gives me a great satisfaction sometimes. Most important, I learn a lot of understanding of this hardest, exhausting job ,and of course of understanding of this most beautiful art. Thank you for your existence , and your generosity to share your fantastic talent and knowledge.

I'm from the Philippines and I'm just starting to re-live my old hobby after almost 30 years and I'm looking at tips and techniques on how to paint different things in nature. I was hoping to get some few tricks here and there until I saw your channel and did not expect to see a full in detail step by step tutorial on every video, it's like going on a painting school for free. Thank you so much for selflessly sharing your talent especially for novices like us. God bless and be safe always.

Hi Michael To me, this video is worth 'a hundred of your others' (as it were) as I now appreciate the finite aspects of your technique. I want to thank you so much for showing us the 'nuts and bolts' of the painting process and very much hope that you'll be delivering up the other techniques that you employ for rendering both distant and closer trees. Quite superb Michael. Best wishes Nick Harvey

Very useful for painting trees in acrylic too, the details of the brush stokes was very helpful. That change from some of the dark mottle to the completely-mottled-with-branches caused my head to explode, had to go back and study the frames over and over, have a long ways to go but I've produced a nice tree, thank you!
