Since my mother's house was assaulted I was interested in your channel and I always go looking for the best locks, but today when I see the Monastery of the Battle of my country Portugal at the end of the video I am proud to be a small country but with beautiful monuments which, thank God, they are closed for seven keys. (traditional saying)

The key way on this is to accommodate multiple different key blanks. Called a composite key way.

Bill, you can recover the lock core by drilling the push button out. It's very easy to make a new button using 3/16 brass rod bored out, 1/8" rod for the button and cut a driver spring down to 2/3rds. Shape the 1/8" rod stock as you would with homemade security pins. I bored the 3/16 brass rod using my hand drill as a lathe. I think I might even have a video showing this.

I'd love to see that. Please message me if you do post a video.

I had the exact situation happen which you mentioned with the disassembly: I accidentally rotated the core the wrong way and the detent got caught inside the bible. It was far enough toward the back that I could see the base of the detent, so I took the little brass flat piece at the back off and used a small hooked piece of wire to pull the spring out of the detent. I then shook the core until the detent piece fell down and pulled the core out. It looks like it may be possible to compress a small spring and insert it back through that slot and possibly fix the detent, but so far no dice. I was able to retrieve the core though, so it's a small step toward success ;)

The 83s can be surprisingly difficult compared to the domestic, no-security-pin DIY store stuff we're used to.

Lovely Mr Bill! What does that 1000 stamping mean though?
@tok36597 жыл бұрын
I believe that the number denotes the key way patent number.
@cdw34237 жыл бұрын
1000 is the Abus code for a Russwin keyway. 100 yale 200 Kwikset 300 Schlage C 5 or 6 pin 306 Schlage C 6 pin 323 Schlage Everest C123 345 Schlage Everest 145 400 Corbin 60 410 Corbin L4 700 Sargent LA-LC 800 Weiser-falcon 888 Abus 900 Arrow 1000 Russwin 3000 Schlage C-L 6000 Master There are a ton of options for the 83 series. You can also get shackles for the 83/45 in brass, Stainless, and "Special Alloy" up to 6" long.

Every 83 that I’ve picked has been set up like this, brand new and used. The 1000 core is supposed to be a Russwin keyway, but it looks different from that in this video. And no “stay safe, stay legal”?? Bill must be having a bad day!!
@cdw34237 жыл бұрын
Since the 1000 is stamped on the cylinder shell, someone could have replaced the cylinder for some reason.
@LockPickingPatrolman7 жыл бұрын
Chris Woodhouse that’s what I’m thinking. Or else the picture I saw of the 1000 was wrong.

I have an 83al/45 with a Kwikset keyway to match the house. I've only been picking for about a month now, but it is a pain. First pin standard and the rest are spools just like that one. I can set pin 1 to 4 in order but as soon as I try and set 5, pins start dropping like crazy and I often have to start over. I'm going to add a 6th pin to rest on the bevel at the end of the key, it may be a while before I am able to pick that.
@ramrod1267 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill, I just went through a bunch of your older videos trying to find the diameter of a standard pin. I couldn't find it. I want to buy some solid stock in the proper size and would like to know what size I need. I would love to measure it myself but I have nothing that can get that small and still be accurate.
@Ucofatoffski7 жыл бұрын
Different locks use differnt size pins, I'm afraid. As for measuring things, get a cheap digital caliper from banggood.com or similar - they work fine for us enthusiasts.

Pins for the lock in the video (Abus 83 series) and allot of other stuff are 0.115. American/Master pins are 0.094

Are these locks decent? I have a few with Medeco 5IS 6-pin cores. After a few months of bouncing around with the TSA, I've noticed the "NanoProtect" coating is flaking off.
@A___Way7 жыл бұрын
Great videos. Your comment on us versions usually not security pinned. 🤔 is there a reason for this? Or just something you noticed. Just economy or regulation
@greglopez18027 жыл бұрын
I was gonna say, all the ones I've seen that we've sold were pinned just like that, but on a schlage c keyway. One kinda barrel-looking double serrated pin and four spools. they also come with a kit for pinning the sixth chamber with a spool.
@dl2000107 жыл бұрын
Couldn't you just press the detent down, rotate, use the holes on bottom to remove the key pins?
@theoneandonlyghandi7 жыл бұрын
I don't think that the lines are a remnant from manufacture on the first pin Bill, every Abus that I own with factory pinning has the same pin in position #1 and spools thereafter.

It looks as if that first standard pin had marks to be cut into another spool, maybe all their pins are made so they can be made into spools if needed.

Sometimes I wonder about bill..... Rarely you'll find a security pin? I have a dozen 83 series locks, they all have security pins....... SMH He may be the most popular picker, and indeed has inspired many people to start picking. But he's often wrong about things.
