I believe it makes them quieter and I think the math works out where you get a tiny bit more surface area engagement with helical gears. I could be wrong though.

Not really, it doesn’t happen too often but it does happen once in a while. Has a lot to do with how the transmission is cared for and how the bike is ridden.
