You make the best videos! I had one exactly like this and changing that one byte got it out of IDU mode. However prior to powering on that unit and after fixing the short on the board, I stupidly connected the LAN cable. I was then baffled by that screen that you saw on IDU mode, and if you did not already know, IDU mode updates firmware automatically in the background when connected to the internet (which is what was happening as I connected the LAN cable!). Therefore, initially I thought I was screwed as I needed low firmware to exit IDU mode (assuming it was an exploit to get into IDU mode to begin with) until I discovered the byte change that got it out. Therefore, I never figured out the original firmware on the PS5. I ultimately concluded that my unit was definitely a kiosk unit (it was never disclosed on fleabay) as there was significant heat spots on the mainboard, probably from being kept on all the time. I also ran into another NOR corruption repair that had a cycling power initialization when applying 12v, it'll go from 0mah to 300mah to 0mah to 300mah cycling constantly, just fyi if you run into that.

Hm, that’s weird. Today I had a chance to read the BIOS and change that byte. I spent a lot of time to make a flashing app work on macOS Sonoma and Apple Silicon. I read it to a file, changed that byte, erased and reflashed it. Then I verified current BIOS with modified one on the disk - they were equal. After turning on the console still in IDU mode. Resetting after that didn’t help either.

I eventually had a chance to reflash it successfully. CFI-1008A requires FF but not 00. However, there's a different issue now: my PS5 cannot verify my older licenses because it cannot connect to the license server: "Can't use this content. Can't connect to the server to verify your license...". Free apps like Spotify and KZbin plus that PS5 demo game work just fine, and even free Brawlhalla does not work.

I just love repairing things. I can work on a lot of things but I find if you want to be really good you have to focus on one thing. For me it has been Play Stations. I think I picked those because I recall my son having one growing up. I have worked on hundreds of them and I learn something each time. It's just repetition and taking careful notes when you notice things.

Yep. If I add leaded solder, keep the hot air at 350C or less and try to be quick about it, I have had pretty good luck recently.

No, I don't believe there is. The ban is done at Sony's servers based upon a unique identifier for each console.

No. You can find firmware dumps on various repair sites of you can harvest your own from various working consoles as they pass through your hands.

is it impossible to buy the schematic diagram? I can find the short circuit,but I can't order a part if I don't know the exact reference or value. I can program the BIOS and I have the programmer too, but where do I get the BIOS? Do I download it from a working ps5?

No PS5 schematics available. You need another, preferably working donor board to compare to. You should be able to find working BIOS dumps with Google. I found them in the Facebook group "Game Console Repair Legion".

If you have a short on one of the outside pins of that 4-pin connector, you have a short on your +5V or +12V on the PCB. It could be anywhere on the board.

I think it’s my power supply. The two pins show continuity and no voltage. When I removed and probed it. I am not taking power supply apart that’s a little out of my comfort zone and I can’t solder anyway. I’m a car mechanic lol.

That was a bit different having to hex edit the bios before moving onto fixing the power supply. I am ok when it comes to programming and cracking/haxing, I use HxD along with other programs such as IDA Pro, OllyDbg, x64dbg and dnSpy. I am a newbie when it comes to electronics and fixing them, I watch electronic fix videos for entertainment whilst trying to learn a little. I had never heard of Kiosk (IDU) mode on a PS5 although I do not own a PS5 and have never used one so that's my excuse. What bios programmer did you use? It just kind of came on that must mean that it wants to live. Strange how the DAP53 gave ok diode readings yet was still faulty. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom while making entertaining videos, looking forward to the next one.

Seems like that exploitable PS5 consoles can enable IDU mode which writes a flag into the BIOS, and since that mode is meant to be restricted its difficult to go back even to stock firmware. Interesting

I wonder if the PS5 originally came from a retail environment. It’s possible it was always in DFU mode and then the power supply failed and then an employee absconded with it and sold it on eBay. It’s crazy that the BIOS has to be flashed to get it out of that mode; I guess it might have the effect of being an anti theft feature.

So that model is a launch model then 1st revision from 2020, they did have a massive heatsink on those and cooler on them, that's shrunk in size obviously to save money and make a profit, but every PS5 they really are such a pain in the bum to deep clean, they have to completely disassembled all the way down, they really get clogged with fluff and dust it's unreal, causing the metal to oxidize and burn off, and I've seen some roach hotels over on David's channel of late, he had some just this week which were still alive, had to place them in a bag and spray the hell out of the machine with alcohol. They really did make these on the cheap and setup to fail from what I have seen since they were released in 2020. Series X has it's own issues and can be more problematic. Two things I have heard though is that Sony are now clamping down hard in China as they know people like yourself and the others are repairing these, similar to how Apple act. I'm also hearing supply delays, price increases 10x and some parts not available anymore so donor boards have to be used, it also has something to do with the most recent US - China set of sanctions and Alibaba came under CCP control after it's CEO was found to be acting using fraud so I know a lot of you guys use Aliexpress for parts so you may struggle going forward. PS5 Slim is CFI-1300 with 5nm die and no Liquid Metal being used. I'm not convinced of the detachable disc drive, I see issues already with that connector, very modular in design and it's crazy expensive for a Blu Ray drive in 2023, just made of plastic and built to fail, reminds me of the HD DVD 360 Drive I had back in 2006. Let's hope they are more reliable than the ones before it, as we are now on the 3rd revision in December 2022 and I've seen you repair them after just 6 months, along with Phil aka Cod3r and so many are being steamed daily on David's channel Computer Booter.
