This is the one I have in my own house. Good to see even the LPL needs a few minutes to pick it. Thanks for the video!

I now have just bought a pair of ("double") Dom cylinders to replace the ones on my apartment front door. (They are like these except for they have a SKG*** rating instead of two stars.) In the country I live in, it is kind of common to put in front doors two double cylinders like the one in this video; one near the grip of the door (or whatever you call that?) another one sitting on knee height. This new Dom cylinders I chose still have the same type of regular key, with six pins that are designed to withstand bumping (I don't know what trick they have used for that, it isn't pins that sit on irregular heights.. maybe it is done with stronger springs.) It is also a lock that withstands attempts to break off the half part of the cylinder that faces outwards (which was an attack that was possible with the old, standard euro cylinder, but only if it was mounted with quite a bit sticking out of the front plate or cover). Also this cylinder holds its own if someone would try to pull its guts out. It is rated at 1500 kilograms for both pulling and snapping resistance. The most noticeable thing about this type of cylinder though is the way it withstands simple picking. Although this type of cylinder now often has at least one extra sort of pin-like or pin-related functionality in an unexpected place, for instance above the key, so that a pin gets lifted up by inserting an actual key, or (what I think specifically Dom does in some of these locks) one or more extra pins sit sideways in the keyway blocking the cylinder if there is no real key inserted that pushes them out of the way with its side(s). Really tricky, and neat, engineering. The most special with this cylinder however is it simply defies picking attempts with a keyway that is made so terribly narrow, and with such extremely sharp edges (if that is what you would call it?) that it simply is not possible to stick any pick whatsoever into the lock. Anything that is more flat and has more size (I have a hard time picking my words here) than say a paperclip, will not just only barely fit in, one cannot make those moves that are required to reach up to above one of those - furthermore regular - pins and than push downwards onto em, not even a bit. So, simply due to its architecture it totally withstands picking. And this has driven me towards wondering what has kept lock designers from making use of a trick this simple and straightforward much more often! Except for if that were to keep the sports alive, I am afraid I cannot understand that at all!

"this has driven me towards wondering what has kept lock designers from making use of a trick this simple and straightforward much more often!" The main issue is key strength. The more complex that you make the keyway, the weaker you tend to make the key. A rash of consumers with broken keys could be a nightmare for a lock company... since picking is an extraordinarily uncommon threat in the "real world," it is an easy decision for the lock makers when designing their keyways.

thanks for responding! I at the moment have no time to look up all those hundreds of videos, but there are a lot of completely standard eurocylinders, that amongst other makers are from Evva, Nemef, Abus and others, that are not pickable be cause of the sharp turns /edges ing their keyways. Bosnianbill has shown /demonstrated several of these, most are living in his nasty bucket (naughty bucket?).The fact these keyways, at the height where the tops of the pins are or just a tad lower, make a sharp, like 100 or 110 degree turn (and most often does that in two or three places) and therewith are making it impossible to reach down onto those pins with any type of pick, does not at all mean that the keys that come with them are any weaker than any other key fitting any other simple eurocylinder lock however.

Hi Harry, Interesting security drivers in 1 & 2. Reminds me of a pair of wheels and an axle you might find on a roller coaster car! (:- ) I guess if the narrow top and bottom of these pins were removed, they would act as normal spools, but with the narrow protrusions, they sometimes need an extra nudge to clear the shearline, as on pin one. Nice picking and description. Regards, Brian.

+Brian Hignett I've seen those drivers before in the Abus "Extra Classe" dimple locks... If I recall, they gave me quite a bit of trouble then, but I had only been picking a few months at that time. I'll have to dig one of those locks up and give it another go.

+tonyholt90 Agreed, LPL’s commentary is really good. It actually has made guessing how close he is to an opening a possible thing for me in the occasional video, viz., ‘oh, he’s probably just has to return to #4 now…’ and then have that happen with LPL correspondingly sayin’ so. :D All-in-all awesome KZbinr. +1

Very nice to see you fighting with that DOM. Great video as always. Would you consider key pin #3 to act as an overset trap against bumping and raking?
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 8 жыл бұрын
+Potti314 Thanks. It's definitely an overset trap... not just for bumping and raking, but for SPP as well! In fact, this is very similar to the design that I use for key pins in my challenge locks. The only difference is that I sometimes use slightly more of a top bevel to give false feedback.

Interesting spools in 1&2 and totally loving the driver in 3.😍😍😍 I'm sure to buy brand new with all of the security pins and anti drill measure this would cost quite a bit!!😯🤔 Beautiful picking as always and thank you😘😘🔓

+zanshibumi They were! I suspect this lock would be much easier, however, now that I know what's inside...

I think they missed a trick with that ball-bearing. They could have made it so that the end of the key "handle" pushed the ballbearing in and that could have pushed against a pin in turn and unlocked the door. So a duplicate key, with a smaller key "handle" would then not work.

@LPL: that 0.015 Peterson 7 looks pretty! I think it’s their deepest hook, right? Considering an upcoming trade, how do you rate it, esp. compared to other deeper hooks out there?
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 8 жыл бұрын
+Simon Klein It's the deepest hook in .015" thickness... The Gem is just as deep, but the shape is not that great for tough keyways. The 7 hook is my favorite medium hook, hand down. I wish that Peterson made a deeper one in .015". I rely on a Sparrows .015" hook for when a deeper hook is needed.

Ima a pretty newb picklocker and dont really have much knowledge of it yet, but can you explain the purpose of a spool? And what makes it so hard to picklock it?

in real life these eurocylinders are in the door with the springs below. Is it easier for you to pick these eurocylinders upside down ?

I kinda expected them to be really easy but turns out that’s not the case. Still happy we’re switching them out as we still have the locks from previous owner without all the keys. 🙈
