RUDY AND THE MILKY WAY
(a book by Hryhorii Falkovych, Lviv: Stary Lev, 2023;
illustrated by Iryna Potapenko,
translated from Ukrainian by Victor Fet,
Kyiv: Oleg Fedorov Publishing House, 2024)
Rudy and the Milky Way is a new collection of poems by Hryhorii Falkovych, one of the most favorite children’s authors in Ukraine. The book is touchingly and tenderly illustrated by Iryna Potapenko and appeals to both children and parents. On the pages of this book, the reader gets to know the "migrant" dog, Rudy. In 2022, in the very first days of the war, this endearing Jack Russell terrier, together with the family of Hryhorii Falkovych, left Kyiv and ended up in western Ukraine, seemingly beyond the reach of Russian missiles. As a beloved pet, Rudy experiences the war along with the humans around him: in times of danger, he runs to shelter; he cheers for “all-clear” signals; he supports his fellow refugees, making friends with local dogs and getting to know cats and birds; he watches TV; he walks with his master through the streets of the old city of Kolomyia; he thinks about difficult life problems and dreams of victory and peace, of human and canine happiness.
Rudy and the Milky Way was recognized in Ukraine as the best children's book of 2023.
From the Reviews:
"A surprisingly elegant and picturesque publication. Realistic mood drawings of Iryna Potapenko create a complete artistic world. Hryhorii Falkovych's poems - transparent, wise, full of trust in the world - tell the story of a migrant dog, but also testify to the eternal beauty and goodness of God's world, in which everything must be fixed and get better.
In 2023, this little book about "dog" life awakened in me almost the most human feelings and faith in the humanization of the world.

"This very tender and sensual collection of poetry gently guides you through the experience and emotions of children and adults who experienced and are experiencing the war, leads to outside memories and hopes. There is no sense of tragedy in the book, but sadness and tenderness and peace. Illustrations complement and enhance these feelings."
