It has been - 30 C to - 34 C here for a week + wind chills , yesterday was - 34 C at high noon, huge moisture is coming off the Pacific - even rainy Vancouver is getting hammered with snow, it has been - 50 C in wide areas of the Yukon all this week. When I was a tanker (armored ) in Germany, 2/2nd ACR. At night on exercises we would bivouac. I had a shelter half (half a tent ), a goose down sleeping bag and a wool blanket. I would climb in the bag, wrap the blanket around me, throw the shelter half over me and zip up the bag. I was as snug as a bug in a rug. In the morning, the snow covered everything. Thankfully, I got out in the early morning, took a welcome leak, and was greeted with a hot cup up coffee. Simply surviving joys. Lessons for all. Old men need to take a screw capped bottle into the bag with them.

I got caught in SD during a blizzard. It went 2ft of snow, 50mph winds with frozen rain, and then another 2ft of snow. I was helping a stranded motorist get their truck to a gas station 2 miles down the road. That is where I encountered a gas station with about 6 people inside sipping coffee with the doors locked. After banging on the door to get in, the clerk told me through the glass that it is government policy to lock down during severe storms. She didn’t let me nor anyone else from the dozen cars in that pulled up after. F*ck that state. On the bright side, I passed through there again a couple years later and the place was shut down and boarded up. Karma got to it.

Been living in the Dakotas for over 40 years...when did this 4 ft blizzard take place exactly? Got a location of the gas station? And what were you driving that allowed you to assist other motorists through 4 ft of snow, not to mention, the whiteout conditions, such as we're going through right now? Just a reminder, this current storm, dropped nowhere near 4 ft, short of some isolated spots in the Black Hills, and it shut down the entire state... Methinks you're spinning a yarn...
@jeremybyington
@jeremybyington Жыл бұрын
@@codymoe4986 I’m not spinning yarn, I was just trying to make a long story brief. I saw a stranded motorist who ran out of gas along I-90 a few minutes after the Kadota exit. I went ahead and purchased a gas can and gas at that gas station and then headed back. Once he filled up he asked me to escort him back to the gas station in case he still has complications, so I did. We get there and the place I was just at 30 minutes earlier was locked up and there was a guy sipping coffee at a table in front of the window and everyone was acting like it was perfectly normal to ignore the zombie apocalypse outside and just went about their day and f*ck anyone else. It sounds like you are accusing me of fabricating this, but imagine how I felt when a state I had only ever driven through a couple times without incident was suddenly saying f*ck off and never come back. I was NOT expecting that.

How is it someone ends up off the road and upside down? Driving too fast! I know as I was driving down the interstate 35W on my way to work in MN and the road was pure ice. I watched the person in front of me do a 360 and off they went into the median, then as I looked in my rearview mirror the person behind me did a 180 and slammed off the road into the ditch! I was fine after that as there was nobody else on the road but me! As Forrest said it best "Stupid is as stupid does". Now that I'm retired, I moved down south where we may get snow for a day out of the year. Then it melts.

Just so people understand. A blizzard is normally the heart of the snow storm. It's high winds and blowing snow. Wich leaves drifts wherever it wants. I live in Central MN. We were -30 to -40 during this storm. Dropped 14 inches of snow. The after math were high winds making it blizzard conditions. For two days and extremely cold. This week we are warming up to the mid 30'. Hoodie weather.

On Wednesday evening in central MN I got 🏡 & fed all the animals on the farm. After 8" of fresh snow with a temp of 2* I warmed my car up which still had some issues from the damp, cold 🥶 a week earlier. I then through a tarp over the whole car. I shoveled snow on top & over everything I could. Then I made drifts around all 4 sides & the car was just an igloo. By Friday I'm glad I did with brutal windchills no travel recommended. Monday morning it was still 🥶 but I unshoveled it. That afternoon the rear windows finally worked & the temp started to climb since then. Still had to put air in the front tires & if u didn't have a compressor & hose inside u were screwed. In weather like this the phrase " don't take anything for granted " is very true. Whenever this kind of stuff happens I just think about how beautiful it is on my mother's B-day on June 4th with all the new borns showing up. There's always something to look forward to but if u take too many chances you'll never live to see them.

Few decades ago, I was driving a 4x4 on a snowy country road in the tracks of a truck. Suddenly, where's the road, where's the field? I turned back.

Video at 2:08 shows completely snowed over road. Wind chill was like -50 for a couple of days greatly magnifying the danger of an accident/break down. This guy: Ain't bad at all.

This blizzard is NOTHING compared to driving across Red Mountain Pass, Colorado in a snowstorm. You're one in twenty of dying from various reasons crossing this paved mountain pass highway in a snowstorm and not the higher sustained winds of a blizzard. Enough of driving across this pass the way the physical features of it itself and add whiteout conditions on top of it. This newspaper company put a article on Google about the beautiful scenery, death, and life or living in this area of Colorado. "Highway to Hell" by The Durango Herald There's reasons why this is the most dangerous paved mountain pass highway in all of Canada and the United States combined. Pictures and the news story stated above speak for themselves.

Truth being told, people that don't need to be on the highway that have no experience in these weather conditions, stay home!! Not gonna pat myself on the back whatsoever, but I've pulled loads in excessive of 100,000 lbs including truck and trailer, have no issues. I have never seen any of our highways here in Alberta closed because of responsible drivers, just my 2 cents 🤷‍♂️

Did that in '94 at Great Lakes. -80 with the windchill. Lots of fatalities in the surrounding areas. We were confined to our barracks for a week with snow drifts up to the 2nd floor windows. Our heating system/boiler blew and the interior brick walls were iced over in our rooms. Fun times! Stay safe.
