Yeah I've worked for my dads sheetmetal company for 27 years and I recently came into ownership of a 12' john boat. And I will be fabbing up my own pods with the help of ideas of youtube. I like the side mount type pods you had made for yours. So I might be taking a page from your pods and make a set for myself. I have two small children as well so I'm not too worried about loseing top end speed so my hats off to you and everyone involved in your pod adventure! I'll be getting mine started soon ,mostly cuz' school summer break is a couple weeks out and my kids wanna go in the boat so.... wish me luck!

I agree with you, 1.5 mph is a fair trade off for the added stability. While I don't have a 12' Jon, I would love to get some reasonably priced float pods for my 16X50. I plan on cutting in a tunnel hull and adding a hydraulic jack plate.
@markanton23494 жыл бұрын
the approach angle on the front of your float pods is scooping water up and out and that's where your drag is coming from. in your video when you're looking back at yourself you can actually see where the pods are pushing the water out to the side. You should have actually increased speed a few tenths of a mile per hour with the extra planing surface under the boat. I would suggest that you lengthen them about another foot or two and change the approach angle of the front of the pods to where it slopes upward and forward only instead of backward and outward. the approach at the front of the pods should match the curve in the front of the Jon boat a sharp angle at the bottom will induce drag also. I would also suggest that your next set of PODS have a flange most all the way around and attach it to the hull using stainless 10-24 truss head screws with a washer and a nylon lock nut on the inside. In addition, the pods should be made out of .072"-.080" aluminum anything thicker is an Overkill most of the hulls on these small jon boats are only .050". I'm an aerospace welder fabricator and I've been doing these tiny boat modifications professionally for over 40 years. Great work though!😎
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your input, unfortunately a little late to the party. Not sure i agree w all your points but appreciate the suggestions nonetheless. One thing a can agree upon is the approach angle of pod. Again, these were designed over the internet and fabricated in another state before shipped to me. If I built these myself in my garage there is no doubt the angle would have been different. Hard to build without a boat. I'll take the result as a success give this was something completely outside the box and nothing I've ever seen done, still having completed the objective. We changed the angle on the second set but have not tested. Boat in video had the pods fully molded in so possibly it can perform better with no front seam. Still more tests to do. Not really agree it should pick up speed given the pods weighed almost 30 pounds and stick outside the side of hull, making more drag regardless of angle. Anyhow this type of thing could really be fine tuned if we were a boat race team, or trying to bring to mass market. We are not in a speed competition and the market is not there , therefore I am happy with the results given im just a guy in my garage. Always room for improvement though.

Not sure. Honestly, id like them higher but the problem is the rib is in the way. So you need to cut the rib or better yet, notch the pods around it. @bigjohnclark3494 жыл бұрын
No it's the width that gives stability but it would ride higher in the way creating less drag increasing too end and increases the load capacity these boats are very stable i have a 12ft and fish 2 people both standing never have had any issues it's only 3ft wide you'll never get a bass boat stability which is almost 7ft wide then the weight keeps it stable the lower in the water the more stability I've got a 9.5hp 196i johnson and with 2 people cruising at 15mph
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats4 жыл бұрын
The stability increase is from the added width. Again, it was a definite difference and increase over stock. Not sure what results others have, but my 12 was wobbly and super sketchy to even walk in before. We fish out of my 1436 two guys all day, but the 1232 just wasn't stable. No, the pods won't make it a bass boat, but noticeable increase in stability, especially in the rear while standing. My goal is to fish off an elevated rear deck, no way I'd do that the way it performed stack with no pods. Maybe it's just me, idk
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats4 жыл бұрын
Also, pods on rear of a 12 is not an option in my opinion. Transom is only 32 inches wide at bottom and you still need room for an outboard to turn. So that would leave you a tiny pod width. You'd then need to make up for that width with depth so you'd end up w a 6 inch wide by 3 ft long pod off the rear of your boat which just wouldn't work in my opinion. We brain stormed that option before going side mount, which actually allows width increase and the ability to run the 6 inch wide by 3 ft long pod i just mentioned in a working fashion that is also aesthetically pleasing

@airdreams14 жыл бұрын
I think they needed to be a little more "hydro dynamic" ie Make them slightly longer with them slanted up @ the front. This would most likely give you back the majority of the speed you lost. You lost speed because you have a squared off front, so you are getting more drag than nessacerry. Once you get them completely sealed smoothly against the boat that will help a tiny bit as well.
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats4 жыл бұрын
I completely agree. We played w some designs, some looked goofy. Definitely room for improvement although I didn't lose as much speed as I thought. @russhood67473 жыл бұрын

@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats3 жыл бұрын
I don't have rod lockers in my personal builds because one is a 1436 the other is a 1232. It eats too much space. I don't like to fully deck my boats, I like a floor system with cockpit area for my kids. On narrow 36 and 32 inch wide boats, if I added a rod locker I feel it takes too much space away from storage hatches and potential floor area. It's a personal preference. When I go fishing I stick 6 or so rods in my truck, when I get to lake, they go on the sides of the deck, it works fine. When I build a 16ft or 17ft boat for myself you can rest assured it will have a rod locker and much more but it's my personal opinion that the value proposition of having one in a super tiny boat just isn't needed for me.

@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats4 жыл бұрын
Follow the rrst of my build. You can do a deck but 10s are unstable unless you do something similar to what i did. Livewell is the problem as if you do a 15 gallon Livewell when its full of water you are adding 120 pds. Water is 8 pds a gallon. So 120 pds, plus you, plus outboard, plus gear, plus deck and floor materials, you'll be at 500 pds or more which is too much for a 10. I am not even putting a livewell in my 12 because just doesn't make sense weight wise.

Do you think it would work with a 12ft Sea King Deep V?
@jdspears28764 жыл бұрын
I have a 14ft "super wide" that is my river catfishing boat. It's quite stable, but I'm a big boy and would be very interested in adding float pods to my boat.

What about making the pods longer say maybe 4 feet. The reason I ask is because I have a 80s model 10 foot and I'm kinda big guy so I was thinking of more flotation plus be more stable. If they are to become an available product I would probably be interested because I'm planning out a boat build

How much does it cost for me to get those pods for my 1232

What made you pick that size float pod. Have you thought of 6-12 inches longer?

Didn't want anything over 3 ft. Nate did the math on inside mass, not my forte.

I need some float pods for my 1232 I flipped it on lake Hartwell back in June. I would like some bigger ones though I'm running a 9.5 and if I lean to one side it'll start taking on water on that side

I've got a 1432 and this is KING! My only question, how much money?
@Toomanyhobby Жыл бұрын
These wheels are awesome. I put them on my 10ft jon boat project. Unfortunately I only use a mirror and not a scale because I exceed the weight limit of the 10ft just looking at it. Hopefully a 12 ft could hold my 250 lb self.
