Yes! Anytime they use a positive statement that supposed to be beneficial for us, we should automatically think the opposite. Hollyweird is all about pushing the agendas of the fake bloodline. You and I know those people were way racist back then than they are now. Their own politicians had to make laws for their people to stop showing their animalistic, barbaric behaviors.

The term self-made does not mean you are literally the only person who worked for it or that you don't have support. Self-made means, that you did not inherent the wealth or business or marry into it. CJ Walker was absolutely self-made. Every self-made individual had some sort of team or support.
@NOVA65521
@NOVA65521 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! I agreed with everything except that. She created her own product, smart enough to build a team of people around her who were experts in the field, etc. Nothing was given to her. Her interpretation of Madame CJ Walker not being self-made really bothered me, give MCJW credit for what she built from NOTHING, which was a massive empire that is still running to this day!

@lifeofaseven

I agree, for " self made" people, even they have support, helpers, mentors, etc, never all alone .... it would be nearly impossible, even for the strongest, or most independent, motivated of people, man or woman to do something super massive, or creating a business,.. without ever ever accepting some kind of assistance, either financial, loans, emotional support, advising, friends, teaching, something... that is really rare I would think, if ever.. even these people say... I'm " "self made", sure they leaned on someone on the way up, in some kind of way... It just means that it had to be earned! ... that person and who ever else was helping them along the way... they had to do all the hard work and Hussle, to get what they have .. It wasn't inherited... Or just passed down to them, like family business or money...

you are right but it is true that the racial zeitgeist at the time was a sort of kind of elephant in the room issue with that light skin vs. dark skin trope you know about, I'm sure, the paper bag test; Ebony Magazine as you fast forward in time featured skin bleaching products and favored light-skinned print-ad models, etc., so this aspect of the movie was historically accurate, but a whole lot of emphasis was placed on that issue...unnecessarily as far as I am concerned ...

I think comments like these are the stupidest comments by far. We know what inspired by means and we know the difference between inspired by and a biopic. We get it. You're missing our point. The point is that children are going to watch this movie - probably at school which is the same place that they stopped teaching that slaves work for free and started implicating the narrative that they just work for low wages -without their parents being around to tell them that this was not factual. And that is dangerous. People who don't have the same education level that we may have are going to watch this and believe the lies told in this movie. At the end of the day it's very irresponsible to create imagery based on a real person's life and misrepresent important facts. That's such a sorry excuse to chop and screw somebody's real life. If that's the case why don't you just make up a new story and leave real people the fuck out of it?

Netflix might’ve aired it but it was black women that wrote and directed it. Nicole Jefferson Asher wrote it, Kasi Lemmons directed it...I understand that it wasn’t a straight biopic and they needed drama but it didn’t need that many lies. Colorism was a very serious issue in those times (still is) but I believe it was approached wrong. They missed a real opportunity to shed light on what ALL black Americans endured with assimilation.

I wouldn't say they missed it, Netflix is known for distorting the image of Black ppl and Kasi Lemmons is always down to blur the lines of accuracy. This is exactly what was to be produced through the miniseries. Netflix got the right actors/actresses and team for this historical hogwash.

I didn't see that at first when I watched it, but that's why they say " "inspired by" up front of the show.. It means they are going to tell a story their way, and change things, and add things that they think the audience will be entertained by. And yes, this is upsetting to many people.., but it's not that they are trying to lie, or give a false narrative, even thought technically it is... It's just their version of a story, and they have creative license to do so.. I personally don't like it,, and prefer historical accuracy.

I watch the interview that her great granddaughter did and she said 90% of the Netflix series was a lie. I guess they ( writers/ producers) were trying to modernize her to attract a younger audience, but in doing that, telling a lie they created a distorted legacy of black excellence....

Yep, I had similar views. Why not just tell the actual story it will still be interesting. I understand it was for entertainment but because this is the first time people are hearing about her personal life story it is important for the truth to be told. I think someone else needs to try again because they straight up lied, which discredits these ladies honestly.

Please know this was a movie not a biography. What I have learned as a screenwriter writing my own movies: In ALL screenwriting for ALL movies there is a formula for ALL scripts for entertainment:--There has to be a protagonist who is fighting to achieve something but has doubts of her abilities; she is met with opposition then overcomes and WINS! I agree with you!! To get an accurate story read her book and/or watch the documentary. Netflix didn't lie they created a movie for entertainment NOT a biography. Hope this helps. Blessings!

A lot of good facts to clear up the embellishments in the series. However I DID read testimonials from other blacks is harlem at the time that frequented her hotel that Madam's daughter enjoyed the company of other lesbian women and that the hotel itself was a safe haven for the Black Gay and Lesbian community. Just because she was married 3 or 4 times doesn't mean she she wasn't a same gender loving Black Woman. It would simply mean she was a complex individual. And aren't we all complex with various dynamic layers to us? AND let us not put it all on Netflix. Not FOR ONE MOMENT taking up for The Establishment or White Supremacy but the series has Black Producers AND Black Executive Producers who put money up to make the series and have a vested interest in making sure the story is told to their satisfaction. So if any misrepresentation was pushed by Netflix should they not have felt compelled to guard the culture and make sure the story was told accurately? But lastly let's remember it is "Based on the life of"..... That in it self tells you there will be liberties taken that will not be true to reality.

I'm glad somebody said it. Everyone is putting the "artistic liberties" take on Netflix as if MCJW great-granddaughter is not credited as one of the screenwriters. A'Lelia Bundles was rumored to have had lesbian relationships for years. I heard it LONG before this saturation mentioned here, back in the 90s. She definitely had parties and provided a safe space for the Black LGB folks to congress. Furthermore, Addie Monroe is not a real person, yet this author keeps referring to her as if she is. They intentionally did not include Annie Malone in the story (a mistake imo) so they could change what happened historically. This is why they have emphasized the fact that Addie is NOT a representation of Annie. Lastly, no one is truly "self made". To imply that this is a feminist agenda is an untruth. Everyone hires people to bolster skills in which they are deficient, that doesn't take away from their independence and self motivation.

Netflix may have still had a hand in production, or other parties we are not aware of. With that being said, the only person that has spoken out about the lies in this movie was CJ Walkers great grand daughter who said only 10% of the book was used for the movie. The writers should be ashamed of themselves for putting this out there though.. if they were mainly black as the credits say.. they squandered an opportunity to actually put something in a positive light for blacks.

I recognize that I did not mention Kasi Lemmons (same as Harriet) being the Executive Director alongside a slew of Producers, including Lebron James. That was edited out of the video for time sake and the list being entirely too long to thoroughly explain, as I so often love to do! However, if you looked through the sources left and YOU did your own research, YOU would learn that on your own, which is always the goal of my platform. I don't know how many folks on this thread work in tv or film production, but it's not on Netflix. It's on the shows creators and producers, the majority African American who do what they have to put together a story they can pull off with the budget they had and character needs of the network. Netflix did not "lie" the show's creators mashed up the issues they wanted to explore or capitalize on. My guess is Kasi Lemons had a lot to do with the lesbian character and skin tone, good hair etc. as well as Octavia Spencer. If you want to judge it on those terms, they're the creators, so they're the ones holding the bag.

I agree with another person who commented...I wouldn’t say “Netflix lied” as well. I’m assuming this was the title to get us to watch. One of the main points some friends of mine has to point out to me was that this is a “story inspired by”, which does not equal documentary. Watching this series did make me go look up more about Madame C. J. Walker. I do wish we could watch more documentaries so they can tell accurate stories, but we see more of the inspired stores to make more appealing to the majority of viewers. Personally, I appreciate the truth but I get it. Last comment...I wouldn’t say the daughter “wasn’t” gay, just bc she had 3 husbands to me doesn’t mean too much bc maybe she did that to satisfy her Mom and the family name. 🤔 Unless some other facts can be true, I’d be hesitant to say it was a “lie”. I’d just say we don’t know about that one. I do look forward to reading the book by her granddaughter though.

@4thTribeJudith
@4thTribeJudith 4 жыл бұрын
think comments like these are the stupidest comments by far.
