Coming back to this scene after completing the game, I can certainly appreciate the foreshadowing going on like how Cognitive Sumire says "It's my fault" and the words uttered by Cendrillion during Kasumi's awakening.

The whole awakening speech fits really well for the foreshadowing as well. (spoilers) "Rather than accept a life in cinders You'd strive towards splendor-- You know the risk. If those truly are the shoes you've chosen, I am thou, thou art I Accept this contract... The spell cast upon you..." Sumire has chosen to leave what she considers to be her previous pathetic life, where she believed Kasumi's death was her fault and that she could never escape that. Carrying on Kasumi's dream was the only thing she could do, but in return, Sumire would have to be the one who dies. If she's certain this is what she wants, then she must accept the contract, and the spell that she was under, which is very obvious, in retrospect, about Maruki's actualization.

It's because they're actually struggling to confront the reality of their pain. Kasumi is using a flimsy excuse and isn't actually confronting her real issue. The awakening is so fake that she throws it off like it is sitting on her face rather ran stuck to it. It wasn't even a quick bandaid pull like Yusuke, it was just throwing it away.

This is probably one of Royals best additions. I am not talking about the awakening but the entering of this palace. The player is getting in randomly without knowing who rules this place. When I first saw it in the JP version I was speculating and analysed it. The white aesthetic representing perfection, the pigeons representing peace, the cameras indicating control as well as the walls with scientific notes. All indicating to a place of peace controlled by someone higher. I was shocked that I was right with this place leading to paradise. Definitely a great choice to introduce this place without being the next target.

There's something cool about the fact that it's only Joker and Morgana for this sneak peak too. It helps build the idea that these two are partners and no matter what Joker will always have Morgana there if there's trouble. Plus they don't really get a chance to work off each other alone for Palaces even when he's your only party member Ryuji's still around in cutscenes.

I think expectations come into play as well. Up until now, The game has been very similar to Vanilla P5, plot wise. I was under the impression that Royal content was only gonna be after Yaldaboth. This was before Sae's palace and i was not expecting this at all. This broke my expectations of thinking Royal plot was Only at end game as well. Plus you Also mentioned how not only did this scene fill me with dread because of how unexpected it was, you feel unprepared just going into it because its just you and Morgana and no one else. Such a good scene

Holy shit, I keep coming back to certain scenes after beating the game and keep finding more foreshadowing to later parts. Listen to Kasumi and the two people talking right before the cutscene with the nav starting up. All three of the keywords (palace owner, what they think the palace is, and what it actually is in reality) are used, and as soon as she says “stadium”, her nav activates. Really smooth transition, and a nice Easter egg for people in their new game +.

But I feel like this happens because to Maruki, Sumire is dead. The girl we know is Kasumi after all. So that's why she is killed by a shadow right away. I haven't heard everything yet but Mona's new lines (in delivery) are just the worst. I don't know what happened with the VA but his new monotone lines clash with his old more emotional/high energy ones.

Spoilers I like how this entire thing is foreshadowing without it being a huge clue that something wasn't right on your playthrough up until the third semester. Her persona's entire speech tells us straight up what happened. The spell cast on her was when Maruki made her believe she was Kasumi. And Sumire consistently chose to believe it all when confronted with clues she wasn't. And her awakening, unlike the others, wasn't a rebellion against the distorted reality, it was a rebellion against actual reality. Everyone else got a costume that fit their rebellious self. Sumire did too, but hers was different in that it was a transformation sequence ala "Magical Girl" which is basically donning a costume to be someone else. They did a good job here, imo.

@@Person-fq9uz Spoilers below Go back to 1:05 and follow the dialouge, there you have the keywords: Maruki, stadium and lab (spoken by Kasumi). So yes, she does activate them by accident. In the third semester she's also the one who opens the way to the palace because she was the one who opened it the first time as seen here. Also, I think the Shadow is so weak due to fact that they wanted you to fully utilize Kasumi and catch a little glimpse of what kind of enemies you'll encounter (not in power but just in general). Just my take.

Here's something I noticed, after I beat persona 5 royal and came back to this video. Before she awakens she says "I won't tolerate anyone speaking ill of our dream." OUR dream, you usually say our with two or more people and I could be really much looking into this alot, because this is just a line that probably not that important, but I think at that moment she saw herself more as who she actually is Sumire. During Third Semester you'll hear Sumire talk about how Kasumi said that her and Sumire were going be stars together and do everything twins/siblings do together, whenever famous (I say twins cause there's no way in hell they aren't twins, but also put siblings so people don't get mad) so she remembers those words and screams it at the Shadow then magical girl awakening!! So Maruki's brainwashing is very very very 'helpful' for Sumire, but also she does remember she's not really Kasumi and she's just her younger sister. SPOILERS: If one listen really closely, you can hear the tone of cendrillion voice change. Notable when Kasumi first awkaen, her tone is rather bold and direct. Once kasimi revert to sumire, cendrillion voice change to a softer and gentle tone, emphasising sumire recogbizing her true self also change her persona in a sense

One of the playable characters was going to have Hifumi's design but Hifumi as she is in game was the designers salvaging her design for a confidant rather than just not using it after they scrapped the playable character.

Palaces, in and of themselves, are not necessarily proof of misconduct, only distorted desires. Lots of people have Palaces, but the Phantoms make a point of trying to only target those whose distorted desires are bringing about misfortune, and there's no proof of that here per se.

I'll be real, in my opinion... Kasumi was pretty underutilized in places she should've been. She's shoved into tons of situations, most that feel pretty forced. They should've been playable in Shido's palace as her ' Kasumi ' facade. Just so she feels a bit more fleshed out instead of being shoved in the last palace for plot relevance. Kind of like Vanilla P5 Akechi, where she's not a character, just a plot device. No offense to Kasumi fans, she's an acceptable character, just doesn't feel like enough.

I think the reason why this awakening is less way less painful then everyone else's is because of the nature of it. She awakens after doubling down she IS Kasumi Yoshizawa. That, and Cendrillon's lines "well, if those are the shoes you've chosen" and "this spell cast upon you." makes me think this isn't an actual awakening, it's even more of Makuki's Palace and Persona meddling. It's not able to truly rewrite reality yet, but if Sumire wants to belive she's Kasumi, it can make her awaken as Kasumi. TL;DR this is a fake awakening constructed by the Palace.
