12 Pound Fluke of a Lifetime! How One Move Saved a Trip!!!!

To date, 2024 has proven to be a very tough year for fluke fishing! This late July date was no different and, despite, beautiful conditions, the bite was finnicky at best with a tone of interference fish mixed in. With the ocean providing very little in the way of keepers and with some intel from my buddy JT of Next Drift Fishing, we decided to make a long move out of the ocean and into the Bay and Kirk, the angler in the video thumbnail, was rewarded with a fluke of a lifetime, measuring 31 inches and 12ish pounds.
More remarkable, this was Kirk's second double digit in 13 days as he had previously caught a 10.2 pounder on the Gypsea out of Brooklyn.

Hey john, nothing give me a better feeling to see someone let go a trophy fluke who has survived so many migrations and give that beauty her life to continue her life and continue to produce her spawning. Glad you got to retire and have a chance to pursue your love of fishing. Got early retired at 56, now 79 oh where did the time go to. Great job...I took my buddy to the south side on Sunday...It was hot out there. We kill Sea Bass and Mackerel. Unfortunately couldn't find the Fluke. Nonstop action though

Great 12 lb fish, and tough to release when having a slow day. It does help the fishery as a whole. My PB is 28 1/2" and I didn't have a scale to weigh it.

I remember going down there from Virginia Beach as a kid and there was a 12" flounder minimum, and NO bag limit. You'd walk the beach in the summertime and there would be hundreds of caught flounder lining the shoreline.

That was me in the Brew Thru t shirt. I grew up in eastern NC and we were always in the Outer Banks as kids. My mom still lives down there and on a recent visit I had to stop and get another shirt. Truly an OBX institution.
