It is often frustrating for anime-lovers to hear things like anime is for kids! For someone who is acquainted with the deep, dark world of Japanese animation, it is almost baffling that someone completely ignores adult themes that are conceptually beyond the grasp of children. This misconception is largely due to the portrayal in the Western world that animation is for adolescents.
Reality is far from this popular belief and anime, in particular, has serials that are only suited for grown-ups. With subjects like drug abuse, extreme violence, disturbing fetishes and other sexual content, there are plenty of series that should be age-restricted. In this video, we will give you a taste of some of the most brutal and savage 80s anime that will help in shattering these misunderstandings!
0:00 Intro
1:25 Neo Tokyo (1987)
3:06 Robot Carnival (1987)
4:58 AKIRA (1988)
6:57 Crying Freeman (1988)
8:33 Demon City Shinjuku (1988)
10:15 Angel's Egg (1985)
11:57 Violence Jack (1986-1990)
13:19 Baoh the Caller (1989)
14:59 Devilman (1987)
16:27 Vampire Hunter D (1985)
18:00 Wicked City (1987)

Saint Seiya was an anime that caused a huge impact here in Mexico (as well as some countries of Europe and Latin America) due to its violence and mature subjects. It was released uncensored in public tv during a time where the highest level of violence you could watch on a “cartoon” was Donatello throwing a Foot Soldier into a trash can (back then people didn’t even know the concept of “anime”, it was just a “cartoon with Japanese writing”. I remember it was in national news when the first episode aired and within the first 4 minutes there was a scene of the hero chopping the ear off his enemy. Despite the initial controversy Saint Seiya became a huge success, the most popular anime in these countries until Dragon Ball was aired in the late 90’s. Too bad the US missed Saint Seiya due to the terrible dub and the censorship

M.D. Geist, Madbull 34, Fist of the Northstar movie, and Golgo 13 are all 80s anime and could also be added to the list; I've been watching anime since the 70s - first one was Science Ninja Team Gatchaman in Japan or Battle of the Planets in the U.S.; I have to say that the best period for anime (Japanimation back then) had to be mid 80s to the mid 90s - there was just so much creativity without trying to appeal to Western ideologies....

@@teqkniq7164 yes it should. If you watch *M.D. Geist* as Roy Batty's backstory (especially considering that the character design is modeled off of Rutger Hauer) it makes it that much cooler. It may not be the best written anime, but it is essentially *Mad Max* boiled down to it's hardcore essence.

The yearly anime marathon on sci fi channel is where I initially got bit by the anime bug as well. Although the reality is us 80s kids were actually watching anime long before and just didn't realize it. Most of the popular cartoons of the 80s, like the real ghostbusters, thundercats, inspector gadget, transformers etc were all animated by japanese studios and some like Voltron and Robotech were just american adaptations of japanese anime.

There are other videos on "Marvelous Videos" that don't do it, and it is always nice to have a timestamp for the films, or in your case, chapter breaks for each movie. So thanks again! I used to grow up knowing that anime was always for adults. But I grew up in the 90's when anime was not so common, there were few of them and they were all brutal, they were on Manga Zone: "Fist of the North Star", "Akira", "Di the Vampire Hunter", "Tank Police", "Crying Freeman", "Genocyber" , "Battle Angel Alita". All were for adults. I love them. I respect them. They are not just my childhood. But they played a key role in my personal development.

Awesome picks! Surprisingly I have watched or am at least with most of these. I do want to note that you mention animation standards not comparing to today's standards and, sure, that is fair. Most anime today is computer assisted though and the labor that went into the classics shows.. and I think it helps carry the grittier stories better. Also, the same could be said for Akira. Love the story and overall art style but the faces always threw me off. It would seem the artist struggled drawing faces or had a very strange signature when it came to faces.. Still kind of bugs me but I can appreciate the uniqueness of it. Anyone else feel this way?? I feel we are more apologetic for Akira due to its influence on the art and genre alike.

These animes are times better than today's "modern" classic animations and any animations ever. I have recognized the Japanese as masters of animation. Especially Akira is the best animation ever made.

I watched most of these titles in the mid 90s on Network One(N1),Sci-fi Channel, and through video rental. The adult scenes were censored on tv by pixelation but I knew what was going on. This was back before anime became mainstream and all the disrespect of classic anime came to be. Good times

Sometimes I will scroll by something vaguely interesting to me, and just as I'm about to pass it up I see it's from Marvelous Videos - then it becomes very interesting. Occasionally I may find some stylistic quibble or minor disagreement, but the general quality of the content is astounding, so in the end there's really nothing to complain about. Cheers.
