The 80's was the Golden time when Japan had the money to do what ever the hell the wanted and so the truly creative minds in anime had total freedom to fly or die. No need to follow trends. No need to please a particular audience. No need to stick to one universal art style. No pressure to do kawaii shit. Just making what ever the hell they wanted and see if it succeeded on its own merit. When it was a hit it was glorious and even if it was a miss then it's a beautiful miss.

Anime used to be about giving a realistic look. Now anime has an "anime" look that is standardized so multiple artists can work on the same animation. You know how they all seem to be made by the same artist now? Nope, it's legions of artists drawing the exact same way.

Overfiend is one of the most epic, enticing and entertaining things I’ve ever seen. The backstory, the art, the characters, the music. It’s all so well done. It just happens to also be pornography
@ArcherSuh4721
@ArcherSuh4721 Жыл бұрын
Legend of the Overfiend makes me think of the English author JG Ballard and how some of his works like the novel Crash (a dark and explicit book about perverts who get their rocks off by getting into car crashes) and the short piece Why I Want To F*ck Ronald Reagan (which is exactly what the title suggests) were considered obscene pornography by some people. Most artists would say, "No, it isn't!" and defend their projects by bringing up the artitic merit and so on, but Ballard always would respond with answers like, "Yes. It's obscene pornography. That's exactly what I was going for." And it's the same with Legend of the Overfiend. It's both art and pornography.

I watched Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend at a party in 1989. Back when the material was termed Japanimation. Because that was anime, a dead art form. Modern anime is mostly team-created cartoons in the "anime" style of mere looks. It won't be long before artists are completely phased out and replaced with CGI coders, replacing actual animators altogether. There are programs that perfectly create original works of classic composers, as in perfectly mimicking their style... with the only human involved is the listener. There are children born now who will not see any actual art created in their time... aside from calling memes "art", which will devolve (yes, can go lower than what they are now) into the online version of infant scribbling. I hate to say it but we need to nurture OG weebs (weebs before "weeb" was a word) to bring back anime.

Also her going on that giving kids voice acting job in a movie is the equivalent to actual fucking crime was hilarious, guess we should go take all movies that are not intended for children that has a kid as an actor in the movie and go burn them and arrest the creators. Narrator should stay on her twitter bubble and keep thinking that is how everyone in the world thinks lol.

Wow Literary every anime on this list is part of my first few years discovering anime at my local video stores. With Demon City Shinjuku and Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend being two of the first three Anime I ever saw, just after Akira. It seemed that anime could be a medium for any type of content that main stream (especially American) Movies couldn't or wouldn't even touch at the time. Also I don't think anyone can ague that old 80'-90's anime was, in general, animated so much more inventively and artisticly than the stuff we get now. Wow I just realized how old writing that makes me.

Devilman is an extended exercise in unstable irony - once you know when the anime is deliberately camping it up, and when it's being sincere, it becomes very, very enjoyable. This is why KZbin vids poking fun at the two Devilman OVAs from the 80s are missing the point - it's meant to be camp as Christmas. That's half the point. (Also: Violence Jack should be in Mortal Kombat ASAP.)

I believe the reason why some animes back then and now are gory is to show the somewhat realistic side of human behaviours; I'm no expert on Psychology or Philosophy, but I think this is how one person would look if sliced like this or what they would say if this or that happened. Yes, I know seeing dead or killing children and r****g women is very wrong, I think it is kind of a lesson. Now I will respect those who hate the sight of blood or gore or whatever, some people are like that and you are my friend. I accept you. So that's my opinion. I hope it was okay.

The ''Crying Freeman'' live-action movie with Mark Dacascos is frikin' awesome, one of the few good live-action adaptations of a manga/anime and directed by Christophe Gans who also did ''Brotherhood of the Wolf'' again with Marc Dacascos (also Vincent Cassel & Monica Belluci) and also the first ''Silent Hill'' live-action movie. The live-action ''Crying Freeman'' is basically a hommage to John Woo with amazingly choreographed fights and slow-motion shootouts. Generally speaking Christophe Gans is a talentend director, highly recommend checking out these 3 movies. (just don't bother with the ''Silent Hill 2'' movie which is directed by another director and crap.)
