I am always amazed at the huge selection you have at the Globus store there. I have never seen that amount of cooking oil in the stores over here, but I have never been in a grocery store that big either. I hope the dish turns out great. I see that Alex is wearing his jacket with old glory on it today. The leaves are starting to fall off the trees now. The temperatures are back up to 15 to 20C now for a while till the next storm comes.

Wow! That's the largest supermarket I've seen (I lived in the US for 30 years, until about 10 years ago). And those prices are cheaper than in Bombay, using real exchange rates (i.e. ignoring PPP), e.g. 80 c/liter of sunflower oil, 20 c /kg for onions, $1 for those spices, ~$6 for the meat ... even the rice @ 30c to $2 /kg, depending on quality. I really appreciate your unpretentious videos.

@@okayvision3413 Many Russians who do not remember the 90s or who only know the west from movies or tourist sites of Manhattan, Miami Beach or Santa Monica think everyone lives better in the US or Europe, I have visited 91countries and less as a tourist and more of an observer, getting to know the local culture, renting a small apartment and avoid big hotels, and from my observations of Russia dating back to 1976 my first visit and a lot of time spent there in the 80s and 90s before moving from California to Russia in 2000, I can say quality and expanse of life, security, personal freedom, opportunities and access to the arts and culture, Russia is at the top of the list. Americans would envy the options and debt-free life of Russians, and real security of homeownership. The hatred of Russia in Europe and US is all based on ignorance fed by intense propaganda. Ask people why they hate Russia, asking for specifics and few could name any reason other than they were told that daily all their lives. I know every American who hates Russia has something in common with all the others; none have been here,none know anything that is true about it. The media repeating official government policy instead of facts is a very corrosive element.

@@cjyo9123 There ar many Russian supermarkets also, however. But every neighborhood has smaller markets, with fresh-baked bread and pies, direct from the farm produce, fruit, honey, bulk milk, meats. In city centers they are everywhere, I seldom go to the big stores, they are out in the suburbs when fresh and low cost can be had within a 5-minute walk. They do not have a wide selection but it is more like a farmers market and cheaper for fruit and vegetables. There are also bakeries every block which makes a wide variety of breads, caked and pies fresh every morning.. A fresh 2-foot long baguette might be $0.25, or savory pie with salmon or chicken for $2, dinner for 2. I am so spoiled by excellent cafes, restaurants and close in bakeries I seldom go to large grocery stores. There are 13,000 restaurants with a 4 or 5 star review rating on TripAdvisor for this one city of any sort of cuisine.

Very interesting, I have not seen your channel before. Which city are you showing? I am an American who moved from California to St Petersburg Russia 19 years ago and loved every minute of it. The prices now, at the end of 2019 are higher in grocery stores but the Ruble is a little stronger also. Cost of living is really reasonable here so there is very little personal debt, most own their home free and clear of any debt. Other major savings are free medical care and free university. The savings for young families are even better, such as paid family leave for up to 4 years. I still have no car here and have no need or desire for one because the public transportation is so good and low cost, clean, reliable and safe. The subways are beautiful works of art, go anywhere in a city of 7 million(5mil registered here, and another 2milregistered somewhere else) for $0.60 traveling 100km/hr 300 feet below ground. Utilities are higher, I pay about $100 for an 82-meter apartment but that includes everything from exterior and courtyard cleaning daily, hot water for space heating, electricity, gas, maintenance etc. Since the sanctions and stopping of imports from Europe and Scandinavia for food products quality of food has increased because Russia greatly expanding its agriculture and instead of importing poultry dairy products and meat Russia has become the net exporter or all organic non-GMO food, the largest in the world. The vegetables often look better in US supermarkets but taste real and are fresher here. Fruit of all types are easy to find by imports all winter from the warm ex-USSR states to the south like Kazakhstan. It is October 22 and I had a great fresh watermelon this afternoon. I am 500 miles from the Arctic Circle so the farming in this northern region is limited but most families have Dachas which are rural cabins on plots of land that can be used for relaxation, gardening and raising fruit and vegetables. The small children and grandparents usually stay most of the summer at the dacha. There are so many aspects of living here that I love, from the easy access to culture with hundreds of drama theaters, dozens of classical music venues, hundreds of world-class museums, art everywhere, music on the streets, clubs and concert halls every night, a very friendly and fun social scene13,000 good restaurants within walking distance 400 English style pubs, opera every night, and more restored palaces and stunning cathedrals than anywhere. Culture is accessible to all ages and classes. The on thing that is very different than visitors would have expected, Russia is a far more open, society with very high levels of personal freedom, lack of stress and conflict. It is exciting, vibrant, safe in any neighborhood even at 3am. None of the anger or fear and division that mars US life now. Thousands of Americans have moved here and found life much more enjoyable and secure. Even more interesting than the vast high culture is simply making friends here. Almost everyone you see on the street, in a grocery store or walking in the park has a college degree if they are over 20yo. No country has a higher percentage of the population with higher education. 3 times as many Russians have college or university degrees by percentage than Americans. You can meet anyone you see if you are polite and have something interesting to say or ask a question. The relations between men and women are very natural, without the gender fear or hostility that has divided the US so deeply. Women have had full rights over 100 years so there is no need or interest in affirmative hiring processes, or the open hostility towards men. More women head businesses and universities than men and no one thinks that is unusual. So social interaction is much more natural and friendly. By the way, men coming here never want to go home, the women are friendly, personable, fit, stylish, feminine and highly educated, and a pleasure to meet randomly. Almost all , my long term friends here are women. My female friends from the US say very positive things about the Russian men. To understand Russia a foreigner needs to forget everything they have been told because everything thing they were told is wrong, dead wrong. After visiting for a week you will know more that is true than any reporter or talking head on TV or opinion writer, they never have been here and make up terrible false claims.

Many bring cloth bags but large plastic bags can be bought for 2-4 rubles at checkout. I carry a cloth bag wadded up in my backpack camera bag in case I see something I want to take back to my apartment. Guys tend to buy bags, women bring their own and reuse them many times. It seems women are more careful to reuse bags. That is especially the case in outdoor or small neighborhood markets in the city center.

Russia has a very large agriculture sector with unlimited fallow and water so the imports are limited to fruit and vegetables that come from the former Soviet states south of Russia in the winter. Many types of melons, citrus fruit, apples, plums bananas and anything else one might want. In the north, greenhouses can produce spices, berries and other seaonal fruit throughout the year. Russia is the largest producer of wheat and other grains. All the foods are organic and GMO free. Since the US sanctions cut off imports from Scandinavia and Europe, Russian farmers have greatly expanded dairy products, livestock, and poultry such that the quality is better and now a net exporter. St Petersburg alone consumed more milk, cheese, and butter from Finland than consumed by all of Finland. After the sanctions by the US prevented Finland from exporting to Russia, its main customer,the Fin dairy famers had to slaughter their herds. If sanctions were lifted tomorrow, Russia would not become a customer again since it produces much more than can be consumed in Russia. Russia bought 70% of Ukraine's exports in food but now US GMO seeds were forced on farmers so many countries including Russia can not import GMO contaminated food. Europe can't buy more than 14% of Ukraine's crops by EU regulations. The US sanctions helped Russia a lot and really hurt the EU and Scandinavia, food is better, more organic and fresher.

In Canada, you would pay at least 5 times what you paid in that supermarket. And surely you got better quality products. I am afraid that GMO crap is on our shelves and we don't even know it :(
@stanspb763
@stanspb763 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, all organic and non-GMO but you get fresher from the many city center farmers markets. You need a car for the large mass supermarkets that are located in the suburbs. City centers have too valuable land to build big boxy stores. A modern building like that would not be allowed to disturb the architectural beauty of the city centers. The cities centers of the larger historic cities are beautiful and the people would not allow typical big-box stores to ruin the architectural integrity of 300-year-old architectural masterpieces. Search Google Images for St Petersburg. An Ikea or Walmart would never be allowed to spoil it.

Great store! I don’t think you would see dirty carrots in the USA - people wouldn’t buy them.

Thousands of Americans have.....low stress, low cost of living, peaceful, safe and more culture, plays, museums, art, wilderness, than anywhere else. I moved from San Francisco area, Marin, 19 years ago and have great life that would not even be possible in the US for $20,000 a month. But a lot of older people are used to things as they are so are not happy moving anywhere, even if it means a much better life, better health, and more security. The medical care is very good and ridiculously low cost compared to the US, Doctors still do house calls if you wish. If you live in a city, public transportation is cheap and very good. I live in the city center of historic St Petersburg and use the excellent metro(subway) that is called the Palaces of the People...Google "Moscow Metro Images", they are beautiful. Buses. trams, electric trains, route taxis. Taxis hailed by phone app is bout $1 per mile or less, but best is walking..beautiful cities, clean, safe, friendly and easy to meet people. If you like the arts, plays, classical music, ballet, jazz, opera, museums, dining, clubs, pubs you will be in heaven, unlike anywhere in the US. In my adopted city there are 354 museums, restored palaces and Cathedral museums, 330 drama theaters, 400 English style pubs that are very friendly and social, 550 parks 44 islands and accessible from anywhere by high-speed Metro(subway) for $0.60.

The size of that store, the good ole Soviet days are long gone. Prices are about 25% cheaper than my area. However' those Russian prices will slowly rise up, it's inevitable. Anybody notice the Chevy in the parking lot at the beginning of the video?

The food is so plentiful in Russia, I was wondering how long it has been since Russians used to line up and spend time waiting for just bread? I remember seeing this when I was fairly young. Can you tell us about this?
@IliyaOsnovikov

It was a very brief period of a few months in 1991. And since 1992 when Russia had started implementing a free market economy there have not been any food shortages.
