£12 vs £130 CYCLE JERSEY, what are you paying for?

Can a £12 Chinese cycle jersey from eBay really compete with a £130 premium jersey from LeCol?
A comfortable, easy to wear cycle jersey is an essential piece of clothing for every road cyclist. There is a lot of choice out there, but the top brands command equally top prices. Companies like Rapha, Assos, and Castelli will charge you hundreds of pounds/dollars, for one of their jerseys.
Online retailers like Ebay and Aliexpress are littered with MUCH cheaper options, that can cost more than 10 times less. In this episode, I will be pitting a premium jersey from LeCol, against one of these budget Chinese alternatives, from a brand called Weimostar.
I will cover the choice of fabric, the stitching, the pockets, the zips, the fit, and the overall comfort of each. As you might expect the LeCol jersey is a great choice, and excels in all these areas, but not everyone can afford such expensive equipment.
I will cover the reasons why the cheaper jerseys work for me, and some of the tips and tricks you can use to make them work for you.

I'm the same. We have a very limited range of colours and designs in NZ because it's a small market. AliExpress has all sorts of fun outfits and repros of old gear from the 70s and 80s. I've also got matching winter fleece versions. But even better I have more size options. As a larger person in height and build it is hard to get branded gear in my size. They usually only go up to a 2XL, and that's an Italian version of it, ie a tight fit. I don't look good in tight. The AliExpress gear is a better cut and I can get gear to fit. I go up two sizes for a relaxed fit. And I can afford multiple jerseys and won't have to make an insurance claim to get a new one if I fall off. And I'm so slow that being aero is not going to make much difference. Being comfortable does.

I have a few cheap jerseys (China made) and am so happy with them - tons of choices in design/color/size and they look so professional, and at their prices are totally worth it. I'd rather have several cheap different colored/design jerseys than one expensive one.

Seeing how you analyze fabrics, stitching, fit, design, etc... there's only one clear winner that you need to take a look at.... sadly the most expensive.... you know who they are. Many years ago I bought some used kit on ebay from them, and then finally my first pair of bibs. And then I ended up buying basically a whole wardrobe from them and I can't say I'm anything but impressed and enthralled. Oh... Assos.

One thing I worry about when buying no-name sunglasses is whether they actually block the UV rays instead of just having a dark tint. I’m currently eyeing Decathlon shades, not the prettiest, but it’s cheap and works. Also branded.

Yeah, I second this.... There's plenty of "POC" glasses on eBay for £15ish. Obviously they're not legit, but it would be interesting to see what Luke says about them

you only get one pair of eyes sos protect them. You don't need to spend oakley kind of money to get a decent pair of glasses that have been crash tested and have uv protection. The likes of Siroko and Carnac to name a few are excellent value. Or if you dont care for style but one some super tough uv protected glasses look at saftey sun glasses from shops like screw fix. Just dont by fake oakleys or POC glasses off ebay or aliexpress as they are not safe! there was article where a guy got some $10 oakleys, he crashed and the frames splintered and went into the side of his face almost blinding him.

I have some Obaolay sunglasses. Oakley fakes. In a nice case, five different lenses, including clear, blue mirror, grey, and yellow, one at least is polarised and they say they're UV 400 (not that you need that in Europe). Removable arms with a stretch head band fitting. About NZD 18, or £9. Why wouldn't you?

Lol Good points, I own a fair amount of chinese branded jerseys and can say they perform really well when paying attention to the details you pointed out.. I recommend taking a look at Rion and Spexcel, they make top quality jerseys and the prices range $20-30, they carry some features you only see in higher priced jerseys and the fabric is very good, I have some 50-70 uses on mine and they still look like new and smeel good.. the fit is also very nice and slim, only the size is asian so same observation you made

I prefer to buy actual Chinese brands like Rion, Racmmer, Spexcel, etc, not the rip offs. Besides anything else the Chinese brands selling under their own name have more consistent quality.

Keith Christner it was hysterical when they tested 105 vs. Dura Ace, found no perceivable difference but concluded that you can just “feel” Dura Ace is better and you really need it as a pro, or some nonsense like that. I mean, Dura Ace is better on weight but beyond that, the things it’s better on are not relevant to cycling performance.

I have RIONBIKE jersey, it cost around 20 euros and it is much superior quality to the Weimo Star. It's made of 85% polyester and 15% spandex, it's a bit stretchy, it fits snugly with no flappy bits if you get the correct size (which is easy, they have good sizing charts) and seams look very good. I've had it for about 9 months now, it gets a lot of use but still looks like new. It absorbps sweat, so I don't feel as sweaty when riding, but it's gross after a more intense ride.

I straight up cannot justify spending spending $100-200 for a jersey. My current goto is the Spexcel brand on Aliexpress - race fit jerseys for between $23-35 USD.. As Luke mentioned, you will need to go up a size with most Chinese brands. I'm 190.5 cm, 84 kg and take a size XL for both jersey and bibs. Note that their delivery is a little slower due to the current world situation...

I have a closet full of jerseys and full bib kits from Aliexpress and I love every one of them. I'm a 90kg rider so I don't have any of the problems with the sides being loose. Also, living in Florida, I buy sleeveless jerseys so I don't have any issues with having no elastic in the sleeves because there are no sleeves. And while the cheap jerseys may not be quite what the top brand jerseys are, the top brand jerseys are nowhere near ten times better as their price would suggest. Keep on spending your money wisely and I'll do the same. Oh and by the way, I get all sorts of compliments on my cheap kit because there are definitely more cool choices with the cheap kits than the super expensive brand names.

I think whats really important about the price of a jersey is the ethic aspect, that comes with it. Most premium brands start to prioritize sustainability in their product life cycle, not only in sourcing their materials e.g. recycled nylon, but also in making sure to grant fair working conditions and payment for their workers. Which at least for me is an argument towards more premium brands. If you can't afford it, sure go for the cheaper alternatives, but if you have the privilege to be able to afford sustainable clothing do it, and lets be real you don't need 20 different jerseys.

You forget about a lot of stuff that you get on premium jerseys: The elastic bands on the edges are usually better quality and last longer. Also the whole fabric can be more resistant to mold or bacteria and that reduces the smell of the garment. Vents are also placed on strategic places to give you more confort.

Great Vid! I generally buy jerseys featuring teams that have either gone defunct/changed names/drastically changed their design (ie. Movistar). They're a bit more expensive than the Aliexpress jerseys, but still for the money I don't think there's a better value. The only downside is that those jerseys are generally plastered with sponsor logos.

I've had cheap jerseys and expensive ones. I agree, the flaw often in cheap ones is the zipper. They die fast. The fabric is vastly superior in expensive ones but how much you care depends on you. I really prefer wearing my expensive ones but like you I do have a few favorite cheap ones.

One thing you don't mention is performance while riding. I recently got an AliExpress shirt and I find it doesn't wick away sweat, especially around the belly area. My other shirt is from Decathlon (hardly an expensive brand) but it is REALLY good at wicking away sweat.

@@HumaneNewt pretty good actually. Only complaint is the colour is not as it in the photos. It's called "2019 Mens classic Italy fabric pro team aero race cycling jersey ...." And cost me £17. I got medium (I'm 183cm 68.5kg) and am a slim frame. Usually would get large but honestly it's really good and I didn't want to spend £130 on a jersey. Might buy another if I spot something I like! It also took a while, like a month I think

In 2004 I participated in Century ride for event in Hershey, PA. Organizers provided commemorative jerseys to participants and I am sure that those were cheap as the entry fee was really nominal... Years past and I realized that not only I tend to go back to this jersey for comfort/quality/features but despite such heavy use it stayed in condition as new. So, in 2007 I look at the tag/label (which was the only place that was slowly fading) for manufacturer to get more... Sadly, that manufacturer (USA based) closed in 2005. As it is now 13 yr past, I even forgot the name but that jersey is still my favorite and still, after 16yrs of heavy use, washing,... looks and feels as new (except for the tag, now blank)! So, check the "cheap stuff" you may stumble on a miracle.

As a regular consumer of Ebay kits, I have to get the 2 sizes bigger, if you're getting a black jersey, be aware they'll probably use a white zipper. The bibs have plenty of gel and quality has come a long way in the last 5 yrs. Very durable, last 5 yrs at least where my very expensive Bontrager bibs lasted 1, were toast after a century.

Okay, so I can buy 10 china kits for the price of 1 name brand one? I have purchased about 35-40 China Kits over the years and it is hit or miss, but if you learn which brands to look for on AliExpress you can find a lot of gems. The last 2 kits I got both had the sleeve grips like his premium jersey, and also had them on the bib shorts. He is correct about the zippers but, I have a lady that will replace them for $10 and the premium zippers are about $7, so $17+$32(or so) ~$50 and I get a very nice kit that will last 3 seasons or so. It just blows me away how some companies think $400 or $500 is reasonable price for a cycling kit. One crash and you're out that plus damage to your bike and you.

@Brainjock AliExpress. I'm usually 2XL in t shirts at 191cm and 100kg. I get 4Xl jerseys off AliExpress and they are a non tight fit - not too loose to flap all over the place but not tracevelo tight. Some go up to Chinese 6XL. Luke's description of style and quality is very accurate.

@Brainjock my advice is that the size guides are reasonably accurate so check the feedback particularly from your country or similar fit ones eg UK Canada USA Australia and New Zealand. Or Spain Italy South America. And be prepared for them not to be quite right first time 👍

Yeah so the shorts are from a company called Arsuxeo, cost about £20. But as with the Jersey I've actually tailored them a bit to get a decent fit. Out of the box, they are a touch too baggy for my liking.

I remember looking at ebay recently to get some new kit. I found that the sizing between vendors was often vague and really inconsistent. In the end, I decided not to gamble with ebay, and instead bought a bunch of nice kit from Planet X Bike that was on sale. Even with the exchange rate and international shipping, it was still a good deal. Everything I got fit perfect, and performs really well.

Getting a tight fitting aerodynamic jersey improved my average speeds more than getting (cheap chinese) carbon wheels incidentally I had a meeting with a client of mine who wanted to show me around a new office location for a new contract and I did it in my aero gear including bibs and they had no problems with that (although I did ask beforehand and said I could also come probably dressed by car if they'd prefer)

I think you can make a comparison (if any) to the "high" end ebay/ali express chinese jerseys, maybe they close the divide? Also there are direct to consumer brands (here in the US there are) that are reasonable (sub 100 USD but still more than chinese stuff) that you can do a comparison. Also higher end jerseys have collabs with techy fabrics, that really work taht you wont find on lower end stuff like cold black/nanoflex and how all that stuff is put together to give u a cohesive package. Castelli is great in this. solid stuff so far. Lastly, dont read comments much so dunno if this has been said about you, but you resemble the streamer Ninja a lot in the way you look and mannerisms.

I have some jerseys from Aliexpress and whilst they have held up really well one criticism is around the zip! I wore one of the china jerseys over some premium bibshorts and found it was common on all of my Chinese jerseys that the material around the bottom of the zip was very sharp and as a result caused rub marks on my bibshorts after a ride.
