A great tip is do not rent the car for a few days and then pay parking fees...you can rent the car daily pick it up in the morning and return it in the evening if you leave at 7-8am and return it at 6-7pm and you save 40$ parking fee.. you can always rent it again tomorrow morning (make sure you are doing multiple reservations 1 for each day you want to rent the car) this can save you hundreds on parking fees...

I was stationed at MCBH for 2 years. Oahu is SOOOOOOOO beautiful. Like insanely pretty! So many lookouts and waterfalls and rainbows. So many good food places to!! The amount of times I would stop at a random food shack…man. I miss island life. Running lanaki pillbox hike with the boys. Watching the sun set behind the mountains. Going thru the h3 tunnel dry, and on the other side it’s raining. Man. I don’t miss the traffic or the cost of living. But dang. Hawaii is the prettiest place I’ve been. Hands down. 12 year Ewa Beach resident here, Never bring anything to the beach or leave in your car that you don't want to lose or have stolen. Seen tourists leave wallets on seats, towels, park table in pavilions etc, DSLR cameras on the dash, luggage in the bed of pick ups... Also, there is a scam in parking lots. Guys will kick your cars side panel or door when you are in a store, then approach you in the lot and point out someone dented it. They will happen to have a dent puller in their vehicle and offer to pull the dent for $50-100.

I had one backpack and one small rolling carry-on when I went on my trip in the middle of August. The bus driver told me that my luggage had to fit under my bus seat if I wanted to get on. But that was okay, because I anticipated this ahead of time while doing trip research online, and I was prepared in advance for that rule. I got on, slid my rolling carry-on suitcase under my seat and held my backpack in my lap and I had no issue getting from the airport to my hotel. And for only $3.00 one way? Talk about a deal! 😊

Aloha, speaking from a local's viewpoint (I have worked in the industry 40 years), unless you are informing people about how it is illegal to climb "Stairway to Heaven" and you will get fined Don't mention these places. The residents hate when people trespass. Also the parking at the eastern beaches you mentioned, is horrible. Sandy's and many other beaches are very dangerous, look for a lifeguard or signs about water hazards. And yes Hawaii is a big tourist destination, keep a look out for thieves. And...Waikiki is one of the best beaches around, especially for familys and singles. Despite your feelings about the sand. Most of the sand is now pumped off the ocean floor and spread on the beaches. Yes there are hidden fees. Just like anyplace you go. Las Vegas for instance or California. The fees!! Saw a "deal" for $1990 for 10 days. Once I added those fees, NOT including daily parking, it turned to $2761, then parking on top! Stayed at Marriott last Feb,$45 daily parking, we stayed 3+ weeks, sometimes couldn't find a spot! The resort fees were a joke. We only slept there. Aloha stadium flea is great. Found my beach hat. My husband lived there in the 70's. His mom said if they didn't have it then you didn't need it. Staying at the North Shore this Feb. We put 1600+ miles on our rental car last time. We found awesome beaches that never had more than 3 other groups. Waikiki Beach was a big disappointment. Ate at Romys shrimp just about every day, will again! All local places other times. We come to hike, swim and eat. Looking forward to our trip this Feb. ❤

Great content.🥰 Lived in Hawaii (Oahu) about 14 years. Anyway, way back in the mid 1990’s, we were on a family trip n one of my fam members n I were a victim of a SCAM. A guy was at the airport, gave us a very sad convincing story that he had a personal crisis, we felt really sry for him, we collected enough $$$ to pay for his one-way flight from one of the outer islands back to Honolulu n the airline ticket agent informed us that it was a huge SCAM. The others in our fam who refused to donate to him, laughed at us. I’ll NEVER forget how these evil people target kind, compassionate n vulnerable people to give up their hard earned $$$. Anyway, a major lesson learned, I very rarely give $$$ anymore as a result mostly bcuz rarely carry cash these days. Btw, I like the tip about that Surf hotel that has FREE parking n FREE coffee. Back in the day when I was married to a military guy, we almost always stayed at Hale Koa hotel (or at one of his relatives houses). Ty for sharing.🥰 Enjoyed it.💕

A lot of this is pretty universal - rental cars get broken into everywhere, popular beaches always have eagle-eyed opportunists looking to snag things (remember the days of expensive film cameras?) and hotels will always stack on the fees if they can. Good point about Hawaii tap water though - after living on the mainland for so long, I sure miss it.

Been to Waikiki many times. Rent car one day at a time. Pick up morning, return at night. Public bus best for nearby areas, and even to visit Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor and the stadium swap meet for souvenirs etc. U can talk to locals on the bus etc. Be respectful and if you are a guy and bus full allow any standing women to sit if you see that. Is expensive in Waikiki to buy things but if you don’t care then it’s a convenience thing so pay then. I recommend going in the off season less crowds and calmer feel even in Waikiki. Mahalo.

Almost all beaches in Hawaii are public land. The exceptions are the ones on Military Bases. Specifically Bellows past the ID post and White Plains. And White Planes is only military for the rental equipment like surfboards and stuff, but the beach is public. The rest are on a base so you need base access to get to them. So if possible, just bring your own stuff vice paying for rentals. Also, Aulani will try to tell you that you can’t put chairs and umbrellas up at the Lagoons, which is false. Again, they don’t own the beach so you can bring them.

partially true. the land owner owns up to the rocks. before ko'olina was built, those lagoons were not there. technically from the road to the rocks are private property. you can be kicked off the beach. if the security tells something, well they have the power to call HPD and have you removed from the property. the rocks and ocean is public. they have no poweronce your on the rocks. people need to be educated with facts. ko'olina is one of very few exceptions where the land is private and state, city & county and federal dont own the beach. the "lifeguards" when they are on duty are paid by the property owner. please if you don't know, don't speak.
@FpSNet Жыл бұрын
@@yea_i_podagee_so_what I don't think that part about the lagoons is true; it has nothing to do with the rocks its with the water itself. The law states : The public has a right of access along the beaches and shorelines in the State situated below the “upper reaches of the wash of the waves.” depending on time of year/surf/tide the lagoons do develop waves, and are therefor are represented under HRS §§ 115-4, 115-5, Revised.

@@FpSNet yes but the lagoon is not part of that. the high water mark is at the rocks. If you park on Kona street and use the parking meter. Know 100% of the time if the meter expires there are tow trucks waiting that will immediately tow your car. Kona street is privately owned by Ala moana hotel and the towing companies have arrangements with them to tow any vehicle that has a expired meter 24/7. All of the hotels listed on priceline, expedia, kayak, etc advertise rates of under $100 a night, but it's never true. If you book through them and you get to the pay screen, you will see SOME of the extra fees they add. It could easily be $60-150 extra a night. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL: After you book it and pay in advance on your credit card. They will hit you with ANOTHER fee when you check in: Maybe $80/a night. My $55 a night rate at a cheap ass hotel turned into almost $800 for 3 nights. Solution? Stay at a hotel that doesn't have resort fees. They are out there, but they won't be cheap. They'll probably be the same price as the rooms that charge all those extra fees. Sure it comes out to about the same, but at least the room is nicer.

So sad, lived and worked in Waikiki from 81-95. Didn’t have any scams back then, more Aloha less concrete. Mahalo.

Minute 11:27 shows a parking pay station. The machine's lettering is all in Hebrew(!) so I wonder where that actually is, I'd be very surprised if in Honolulu. I found it amusing as I will be making the VERY long trek over from Israel to Oahu and Maui in one month's time. First visit and really can't wait. I'll be using The Bus and my two feet to get around! Thanks! I am getting a good feel for the city through videos.

I can’t imagine why it’s in Hebrew unless the machine was imported. I have some Jewish ancestry but there is not a large Jewish population here. Our bus service on Oahu is great! 11:37

7:41 (Da) bus system is amazing, nothing like it anywhere on the mainland US. They do stop quite a bit though but so much better than Ubering around.

I actually didn't see any scams or rip offs. It's the same exact thing in San Diego. If you stay in downtown at a hotel, $30 and over for parking a night or more. Coronado is also a man made beach but people love going there. Im watching your new surfjack hotel video. Good one. Like your channel👍

Right. Our sand is pumped to the shore also!! Big deal and at least the water in Waikiki is nice.

Those mentioned are not really scams. They're unreasonable charges and basic safety features that everyone should be aware of.

It doesn't involve Waikiki, but SeaLife Park is definetly a tourist trap/scam. Don't go to the park. It has more love birds than the park has "Sea" life.

Side note, if you like go swap meet... Don't get ripped off like me if you like try some fresh island fruit... If the vendor doesn't get da price listed, always ask da cost! One time I just walked up and asked the vendor for two coconuts to drink for me and my daughter... I'm thinking to myself da price should be around $20 for two... He went crack da coconuts, put da straw in, and told me "that'll be $42!" So I had to take that L... Meanwhile, right around da corner, had one other vendor wit bigger, and fresher coconuts only going for $7 each! This went happen 2yrs ago, and I still get pissed to dis day... 😩🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️

When hubby and I go to Hawaii we have a water bag from local motion, put our stuff in it and you can even keep air in it to float on lol obviously make sure there’s no leaks going on before doing that lol

3rd generation born and raised here, Hawaii is still paradise but you need to be vigilant everywhere you go. Everywhere. Surf Jack hotel allows dogs. So there’s no telling how many different dogs have slept in the same bed you’re sleeping in. Check for fleas/ticks. Do not go to Chinatown. Dangerous. Buy all your snacks, water etc. from the ABC stores to $ave. Be sure to visit the Iolani Palace. 🌴😎🌈Aloha 🤙🏼

From Palolo valley I moved to the Armed Forces YMCA from 82 to 88. Seniors citizens floor with all the old Pearl Harbor vets. I was a kid 18 yrs old. I worked at PIer 7 on the Rella Mae. Surfed in the mornings at worked every evening. You should of seen my co workers faces where i told them I lived. On the days where I didn’t get a ride home at 1130 pm. I walked home. I knew the hookers, the pimps, the drug dealers. They just knew me as that lolo surf kid . At first I was scared , but after a while nobody ever bothered me. Great times as a kid

My wife and I were eating in a well known burger place on the main strip, when it came to pay the bill the waiter decided to cross out the two lower tips expecting to be payed the higher one, suffice to say he didn't get any. PS. We've had 4 graet holidays in Waikiki, it's got to be good for the 19 hr flight from the UK.
