I found you on KZbin and I brought your book last week. It has so many gems in it! I like how you keep it simple for the newbie writer (me). I've bookmarked websites you mentioned that I'll have to go back and review. I really like how you explained the importance of keywords for Amazon searches and the importance of your title. I"m on to your second book now, "How To Market Your First Book." I know it will be just as valuable as the first one. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

currently writing a novel this summer. I have a schedule - 750+ words every day for 60 days! so far I have a little over 10,000 words 1/4 of the way through. I recommend writing and getting the story out now, and getting the good writing out later

The first one deserves its place. My laptop had a breakdown and I lost two almost complete stories and about 1GB of archives. Didn't backup a thing. More than 400 e-books. I'm so feels right now. Had to reset to make it work again. Let me cry in a corner now, thanks.

I was 😢 Lesson learned, the day I got it back I downloaded Dropbox Desktop Version and One Drive Desktop Version. Just to make sure, haha. Because I wrote one of the stories closely to the day the laptop broke down, I remember quite something about it, so I'm planning on rewriting it, but I'm on a schedule to finish three essays for school and writing time seems so... so... far... away... By the way, if I may ask, is there any advice you have for us, who have to juggle school, study time at home and writing time? I'm having some struggles here with it 😅 On the other side, how do I convince my relatives that writing time should be respected and is not a "waste of time when I should be studying for school", to quote my marvelous, but stubborn mother? p.s.: Thanks for your videos!

Hi! My name is Deborah Akinsulire and I've been a published author since I was 13 years old. I've had the opportunity of being alongside the award winning author Cathy Cassidy in multiple occasions and I am currently working on my third book which is my first in a few years as I have been focusing on school work during that time. I finds this incredibly helpful to my writing and I also found that I currently do some of the tips outlined in this video such as finding a photo of the character that I am thinking about and writing notes when I think of new ideas. I'm glad that I found this video and I'm excited to see more from you. Thank you for supporting us.

Using Google images is an awesome tip. I use Pinterest frequently for reference. People, clothes, places, furniture, even for a specific color (I needed the perfect shade of pink once, and Pinterest saved me!) I've found that Pinterest's reliance on images helps me a little more than Google. I've got boards for books and specific characters. Couldn't get along without it probably. It also doubles as a marketing tool. Love it!

Good tips. Thanks. I write by dictating the book into my iPhone using Siri to translate it. It's pretty good. But definitely it's tempting to continually stop and correct any place where Siri heard/wrote the word incorrectly. If I can ignore that and just keep going (and then come back and do the editing later) it's certainly much faster getting the first draft done.

Re: something becoming a habit/routine, some research has been done which has shown that it actually takes a lot longer than 21 days to accomplish this. The research shows that it takes a minimum of 66 days to establish a new habit, but it can also take a lot longer, as much as 200 days or more, in fact. One thing I did to get myself back into the habit after I had gone a couple of years without writing was this: I told myself that if I wrote just 100 words per day, then I would consider myself as having accomplished my goal of writing for that day. My goal (at that time), however, was to write a minimum of 750 words per day. So, I was aiming for 750/day, but I made the decision that if I wrote just 100/day, I would be happy. It wasn't long before I was writing 750+/day and more every day, six days per week, and then the next thing I knew I had hit that 66 day mark. Now, that doesn't mean that I magically had a new habit established after 66 days, though. For myself, I think it takes a little longer than 66 days before something becomes firmly embedded as a habit. For me, I think it's in the range of 90-120 days. It'll be different for different people. Another idea for describing a character is to buy a book like 501 MOVIE STARS, published by Barron's. Using Google is a good idea, too, of course. But the point of using a reference like 501 MOVIE STARS isn't to make a character look like a specific movie star. It's more, as you said, to find someone who looks like the character you have in mind, then using that image to be able to describe that person. Besides, 501 MOVIE STARS has lots of older movie stars, including folk you might not know, but who look like the character you have in mind. Great tips overall, though! :D

@thelifeofawriter8 жыл бұрын
So when you're writing in first person, the point of view you should be writing from is the main character. In which case, she would refer to herself as "I" unless another character is addressing her. If you are writing in 3rd person then you would refer to the character by her name.

As a voracious reader, and grammar cop, (Sorry, but you said "good" at one point when you should have said "well.") I chalked it up to your talking speed. Now that I've endeared myself to you, LOL, another tip is to take your finished manuscript and CIRCLE all the "THATS" (or THAT'S.) You'll find you don't need over half. It's fluff. (Learned this writing police reports.... LOTS of police reports! TOO MANY POLICE REPORTS! Unmotivated to start your twenty-one days? Start with ten minutes. You'll get into the swing! I have a question.. i have written a chapter but it is sounding like casual ..I mean the words or fluency..how can i make it good to my readers..when they read they can feel it...
@nixutree15786 жыл бұрын
Hello, I hope you answer me on this because I have few questions that are slightly bothering me. #1. I've added in a few new character into my novel but I am not entirely sure what to do with them. The first character is a man called Ronan. All I know for this character is that he is like an older sibling/mentor figure towards another character in the novel but that is it really. And the second character is a woman named Amber and the only reason I added her in is because she's the relationship to another character. Would you cut out these characters during the editing process and work on without them or think about what their purpose is? #2. I am very unhappy with a whole chapter I wrote but scared to delete it. Any ideas I can do with it?
@thelifeofawriter6 жыл бұрын
If you feel as though these two characters aren't progressing the story in any way, then yes cut them! Cutting characters and chapters can be hard. But... if a character/chapter/paragraph/word moves me enough to where I want to get rid of it, then the reader would definitely want it gone. Hope this helps!
@nixutree15786 жыл бұрын
thelifeofawriter thank you! The problem with my chapter is I wrote it like 4 months ago and I've continued on like 9 chapters so... if I cut the chapter would I have to rewrite the whole 9 chapters or just make it "better"?
