Just started writing, you are so right in that one reason we write is to understand the world we live in. In never thought of it that way. Thanks for the perspective!

I very seldom comment on youtube videos but I must in this case. This was absolutely incredible storytelling. I found it so interesting that the first real book you had read was Little Women in second grade because I had nearly the same experience, with the same book! This video brought me so much comfort and joy watching. Thank you so much for making this Ted Talk, you are inspiring young writers everywhere.

There are a lot of published authors who cringe when they look at their 1st or 2nd unpublished manuscripts. Some keep those manuscripts around to keep themselves humble.

The first I ever wrote got missing in the care a friend who begged to read it. So many years after writing it, I think I would have cringed so hard from reading that story. I was only 12, I think, and I was fascinated with fantasy stories so I wrote my first ever "Thompson's Adventures". I can't remember the plot so well but I know it is about Thompson, a young boy, who used a path he wasn't supposed to and landed in a magical world where he met this magical creature that guided him. I even went as far as illustrating the story. After more than 10 years and some pending stories I created but never typed, I considered picking up my childhood passion. That is what brought me here. I am sincerely inspired by this woman.
man talk about engrossing. i was so hooked to your stories. all i was thinking was keep going.

By sixth grade I had read nearly all the books in my elementary library in Lambert, Montana. I had a similar experience with my first grade teacher, Mrs. Bertha Baxter, who first gave me the gift of sight by sending a note home to suggest that I couldn't see, thereby leading to my new glasses, and secondly by realizing that I could read far above my grade level. She sent me to third grade reading hour in my first grade year, and I never looked back. The world opened up, and I have been in love with the power of story ever since. Great TEDx Talk!

Why Write? There are an infinite number of reasons. Just try it and it pick one. You can't lose. The better you get at it, the more things/objectives you can use it for. Some people don't even get that far, and can't use it for anything... Actually, that can be said about a lot things, including science. I like to say that science is the cookbook for making things. It's like in The Sound Of Music when Julie Andrews said, "When you know the notes, you can sing most anything." I never did agree with people (Pink Floyd) who say, "We don't need no education." They say that in protest against being another brick in the wall (of the establishment). When in fact, it's the key to getting beyond the wall (of your limitations). I'm glad you found your path to freedom/success.

a person will never understand this simple question us less they have that impulse and need to write. You have to love a few things in order to write- you gotta love the thing we do with words, you gotta love hearing and telling stories, you gotta love life and you gotta want to share your perspective of life with others. all of my favorite movies are about writers to one degree or another.
