You know a lock is for real when LPL brings out a tool you’ve never seen before.
@Tjalve70
@Tjalve70 4 жыл бұрын
We have seen that tool before. It's the kind of tool he uses on (probably) all keyways of that kind. However this kind of key and keyway is not very common, so it may very well be that you have not seen him use it before. If you look at these two videos: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4bXqXqVoN6NY7s and kzbin.info/www/bejne/o16seGekaqqJfdk you will see him use very similar turning tools and picks. Not identical to the one in this video, but functionally the same. I assume he he lots of similar tools, and that they can often be used interchangeably. But that he uses the one that is optimal for the lock.

This is indeed how UK insurance works, if you leave it unlocked OR you use any other lock, they will void your claim. They know exactly how many people can pick the lock (few thousand) and the chances it will be picked, and then they have an Actuary team run the numbers. Which keeps premiums low. Very manageable compared to the US where insurance has to payout no matter if you leave it unlocked or not.

LPL will probably work on the lock and give himself some time to see if it can be done off camera first if not he will probably release a video eventually
@ayush885
@ayush885 4 жыл бұрын
LPL doesn't work that fast. First he'll do ample research, and get the tools and skills needed to pick the lock. You can expect the video some weeks after it is confirmed that he has received the lock.

Given that Stuff Made Here promised to build a new lock with more than 3 pins (and thus, added complexity), it's entirely possible that the lock isn't even completed yet, much less sent to LPL. Patience.

@@Steamrick "Patience" When I read that, I laughed myself silly. We live in a world where if someone doesn't get a rely to an email after 5 minutes, they're calling the person to see if they died. We live in the age of instant gratification, and you think these punks can wait more than a few minutes? And yet it's going to be WEEKS before we see that video. I think these people will die of boredom before that...

Locks or ones very similar are used in the UK known as "FB" locks or "Fire Brigade" locks. They're typically used on restricted roads with gates to allow us access with our Fire Engines and depending on the lock number will depend on the key used. We will carry a variety with us on all trucks.

This lock is a perfect example of why a lot of people call the pin side of the lock in the UK bottom of lock when referring to tensioning positions, it's just how our locks have always usually been made so to a lot of us its how we imagine a standard lock position especially as it's how a lot of our doorway locks are fitted too

Security through obscurity obviously doesn't work if the lock is supposed to be mass-produced, but if the lock itself is very rare, the cost of finding out how it works is not likely going to pay off for thieves. That said, security through obscurity should never be the only security mechanism, and that's not the case here as 30 seconds to pick a lock is still well above average for LPL.

If it requires tools already more specialized than general lock picking tools already are, I'd feel perfectly safe using it to secure my valuables. The locks that scare me are the ones that can be opened with easily obtainable/makeable tools.
