My teachers and classmates only spoke Mandarin at school when I was a student at Taipei. My grandparents do not even speak Mandarin while my dad speaks Mandarin with some funny accents.

Michael Weng In this generation ,Chinese and English are the most functional language in the world.So this is why Taiwanese school's students only speak Chinese at schools.

@@alexchen2068 3 years late but that's still so wrong I have to reply to it. ROC government/KMT forced Mandarin upon Taiwanese people when they arrived to Taiwan. Mandarin just so happens to become "mainstream" because China (PRC) also use it as national language. By your logic, Taiwanese students should speak English in school instead of Mandarin, since English is more of a functional language globally than Mandarin
