Dr. Hanson was by far my favorite professor at TTU. I can confirm everything that he said is true, your success and what you want to do is based on what motivates you! I failed Statics as a sophomore... in Dr. Hanson’s class. I sat in his office and cried asking what I should do, well I retook his class and passed with an A. I didn’t put in the necessary time that it needed to learn the material and Statics is such a foundational class if I had barely passed the first time I would have struggled in the following courses. Here I am today, a graduate from TTU in Petroleum and Mechanical Engineering. Nothing is impossible! Keep your head up! Use the failures as a strength not a weakness, and learn from them!

Engineering is really difficult and it takes a lot of motivation, but trust me when I say this, at some point in engineering the physics and concepts start to click and you can relate things a lot easier. For me it happened at the beginning of my junior year.

I failed my first Statics class too, and it took me a long time to get over it, but when I moved on and took my 2nd try, I know I have an advantage and a background already so it came to me naturally. I started understanding thing very quickly. And you'll really realize that it isnt that hard after all. You just need to focus and have a proper mindset and mentality. It was SO rewarding when I passed the second try. I cried on the way home and rewarded my self by buying my self a pair of sneakers. Maybe that's also an important part of passing. Reward yourself if you know you did great! :)

I think this is good advice not only to statics but for every class in an engineering degree. I'm in my senior year now but in my second year I failed calculus 3 because for me, the class took a lot more work than I was used to to understand it properly and instead of making the effort I chose to try to memorize it rather than understand it. There are many reasons why someone might fail but the important thing is to recognize why you failed, and also recognize that you're smart enough to be here doing what you're doing.

I ended up my statics class with 95%. I have never met the teacher, but my secret is that I see these problems as puzzles and tried to see the fun into them, and they are actually fun! I did a major in music before and the secret is the same. If you can find the love of practice, you will get better and have fun doing it!

Nicely said, Jeff. I'm a licensed Professional Engineer in the Midwest, graduated in 2012 and still at the same firm that hired me out of college. I had to retake calc 2 and statics, never gave up though. I always wanted to be an engineer, was and still is my dream job. I failed because I was 'lazy' and hoped to squeak by with little effort like I'd done in high school. I quickly learned engineering school is not like high school. You have to really want it. You have to be willing to put in the time and effort to learn the material and do the homework, which means making sacrifices. Your hard work and sacrifice will pay off in the end.

Just beautiful!!! I'm from Brazil, 42 years old, and I'm finishing Engineering and Management University in Germany. And do you know which is the last exam that I have to do after failing last semester? Yes, engineering mechanics! I have a beautiful 4 years old daughter, and I think about her every time I'm tired. This youtube channel and Mr. Hanson were a blessing to my student life. I will overcome this challenge in July and come back here to write about it! Thanks again, Mr. Hanson.

Although I did use the C word for homework, I have recently watched your videos and I've learned a lot from you. My professor unfortunately is not the best. However, that won't be an excuse now that I have a much better grade and most importantly, understanding of statics. Thank you professor Hanson. God bless you.

Just come here to leave some notes for my future colleagues. :) I graduated several years ago, and just let u know even though at that time I got an A in this class, it does not mean I fully understand all the contents, or I will never forget what I had learned. There is no such a big difference between an A and F grade in a 3 months class. If you have made up your mind and you are willing to spend enough time on it, you can nail it for sure, I trust u. Life is a long journey, don't let your 1 or 2-year unhappy experience define who you really can be in the next 60 years. Good luck, my young fellows, hope to see you on the field, cheers. Thx again for posting so many useful materials, Dr. Hanson. helped a lot.

I wish there are more people like you sir. Valuable words 🙏 I personally have struggled a lot in pursuing my engineering degree. Like, really, really a lot!! I have struggled with severe sleeping disorders that affected my focus heavily (mental state too) and prevented me from learning properly. My grades went downhill for 2 years and I received 3 warnings from my scholarship, and I had to go through probation 2 times, had to retake 3 classes to raise my GPA. I really went through a lot. Even one of the instructors judged my grades from previous classes and told me that I must have something missing from my brain. With all this, I felt discouraged a lot throughout the years of learning and I really started to think that I am not good enough. But I reminded myself that I chose civil engineering. I have to finish the track I started until the end and let no one's insignificant words determine my reality. really it all gets better. Just don't stay laid when you fall, you have to get back up and try again and move forward. It really is ok to make mistakes. Thank you prof Jeff. Your lessons helped a lot with understanding complex engineering materials! No professor in my college teaches as good as you do! Really thank you 😊

Another voice of the many here, but I’m currently a senior student in one of hansons classes. If you take anything out of university, let it be strength of will and confidence in your ability. Believe in your strength and know that you CAN do it, you need need to figure out if you want it enough to put in the work. Engineering is a mental game, a challenge to yourself. Don’t give up! Forgive yourself of mistakes and remember to move forward no matter what.

Years later I finally picked myself up and talked to the university, they informed me that based on my classes taken and new rules at the school I am able to complete it after taking 4 classes. I am ready to complete this now. Thank you for your encouraging words.

I haven’t failed statics yet, and I’m hoping I won’t, but it’s the beginning of the semester and I’m already worried and scared. I’ve had obstacle after obstacle and set back after set back trying to get my degree. I’m going to graduate late for sure and it might even be later if I have anymore setbacks. I didn’t come from a very educated background so even the simplest things can be complicated for me. I’m currently watching your statics course on top of my professors in hopes I can make It through. Even though I already feel like I’m so behind I’m going to work so hard that even if I don’t make it, I know I did everything I could and I’ll try again and again and again until I make it. Thank you for providing this free education and for making it simple enough so that People like me have a chance. I can’t tell you how many times some professors have stopped trying with me cause they already know I wouldn’t be able to hang in. I’ve proved so many of them wrong and hope I can keep doing that. I’ve had my advisor ask so many countless times if I was sure this was what I wanted to do and every single time it’s been yes without any hesitation. I may not have the smarts but I have the drive and determination. One day I hope I can also have the smarts. Please pray for me.

Jeff... great videos. Practical and easy to follow. To your point, I was very close to the bottom of my high school graduating class. My High School Guidance Counselor encouraged me to be a "sheep herder"... :) Four years off taught me to pursue a better career. I "crammed" 4 years into 5 and graduated ISU with my engineering degree circa 1987. 30 years later I retired from HP, numerous achievements, 14+ patents and still going. Thanks for your encouragement and commitment to excellence in education! Like you, if I can do it, anyone can... gotta WANT IT!

Dr. Hanson is spot on! I was literally the only female student in my Statics course, and failed. I dusted myself off, retook it, and you should have seen the Professor when I got a 97% on the test when I retook the course.. These guys know when you can do the work but don't give it your all. I went on, got a Master's degree and now also teach. It takes practice, practice, practice! Take problems, break it into steps and tiny chunks. Memorize your process and solve that problem one step at a time. Don'tbe afraid of a problem or a mistake. Think of it as a "rough draft" like in English class, then revise your work. I'm not that smart either, just put your gut into it! Thanks Dr. Hanson!

It’s a few years of suffering for a lifetime of job security. Buckle down, head to the grindstone, and get insulted by problems that you can’t solve. Then solve them with fervor. This reflex should not end upon graduation, but should be exasperated. P.s. Most of engineering is a hopeless passion project, so you had better have some passion.

Almost 35 years ago I barely passed Statics, I was worried, talked to my Statics professor about my concerns, if I almost failed statics then how I was going to pass two mechanics of materials, three structural analysis anf four structural design courses! My professor was of no help, he showed no interest about my concerns, he told me it was my decision if I should continue studying civil engineering that it was not his problem. I went home, thought about what I did wrong, how I felt about civil engineering and decided to take the class again with the same professor but with another attitude. Today I am a civil and a mechanical engineer and I am teaching seismic structural design. When a student wants to talk to me about their problems and fears I listen and try to help him find a solution, being a professor is more than teaching how to use codes or apply equations.

I really enjoy watching your videos especially to revise what I learnt back in university (scored 92% in the mechanic of solid course back in the days). I had a statics exam today and I definitely improved compared to the first exam ever since I started watching Dr. Hanson. I tried my best to make it through the course with my actual instructor until I found this channel. Dr. Hanson has helped me improve and think of statics in another way which definitely helped me through this exam. I would like to thank you Dr. Hanson for everything that you have done, helping not only your students but most of my class and many other people that I have recommended you to. I do not like to talk about other people badly but my instructor never taught statics in his life and he doesn't even know what the course is about, barely does any exercises in class, and basically just reads the book before leaving the class as usual before the end of the session even tho he never comes on time either. I am very thankful to have found you, you're helping me get through this course with ease, thinking of these problems in another perspective where now I can solve any problem without having any difficulty. Thank you Dr. Hanson and I wish everyone here good luck with their statics course cause it won't be easy if you don't put in the work.

At first, I thought I couldn't pass statics. Not gonna lie, I wondered if I was in the right program. But everyone told me the same thing: it takes a huge amount of time and effort to really master all those concepts, but you will eventually get really good at it that it just becomes second nature to you. Ended up getting an A+. Certainly those concepts will show up in mechanics of materials so make sure you master them. It is very rewarding in the end. Thank you Dr. Hanson. Thank you, sir. You may not know me, but watching your videos helped me a lot, however, I still have a long way to go. Online class setup is not for me, especially in times of pandemic. It was a real challenge where my mental health was strongly affected. I kept failing, and I just recently failed my quizzes this week as well. This may be due to pressure or continuous works because we had quizzes from different subjects for 2 weeks straight with almost 1-3 quiz per day. I almost don`t have time to recover and review. I placed a lot of effort into studying, but the results are still not showing it, so I kept asking if this path is for me. Long story short... I`m glad I found this video because I am already feeling down with my scores since I didn`t do well on my statics last semester, but you encouraged me. Therefore, I`ll continue to do my best as I continue this path and I hope I`ll be enough for it.

I didn't fail Statics this semester, passed with a C. However, I did fail my differential equations and calculus 3 classes, for a couple reasons. I was severely depressed and working on my mental health, and I made a LOT of progress with that. In fact, I wouldn't even consider myself "depressed" anymore, at least most days. I'm in a relationship now, and I'm happy with it, and I can see a future with her. Well, over the break I've been teaching myself what I need to know for this next semester. I've taught myself Statics using this series, I've taught myself linear algebra using 3b1b, and I'm about to teach myself differential equations and calculus 3 so I get a head start on this semester and don't fall behind. I've also completely reorganized my note system, and got a better laptop for school work. I'm going to spend time at the library every week, and I have a schedule set up that'll work for me. This next semester is going to be difficult (Diff Eq, Cal 3, Thermo, Dynamics, and Linear Algebra) but I'm determined to make it work. Thank you, Dr Hanson.

I took Statics during Spring 2017 with Dr. Kumar Golden. I remember registering for Statics and having friends telling me there is no way you can get an A in this class because it is extremely hard and that everyone is happy with a C. However, I really wanted to do great in the class because I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. I remember my first exam grade was a 65. I was really disappointed but that just kicked off my thrive and motivation to excel in the course. After doing countless problems, watching Dr. Hanson videos on distributed loads and more, attending his (practice) sessions, and avoiding some nice kickbacks/"darties"/parties on the weekend, I was able to break the "curse" among people I knew that had already taken the class. I was the first one to get an A, without even needing to take the final exam. Something I learned from Statics and that I still carry with me nowadays is that "you can do anything you care about and put your mind into". Statics was my first love in my ME program and I still love her to date. Thank you Dr. Hanson for what you do for TTU! We all love you!

To the love of understanding what makes things tick. I spent so many hours working homework problems until I got them right and understood WHY I got them right. Dr. Hansons law of lines was on every shear moment diagram I drew and the hard part was figuring the equations. Just put the time in and if you know you’re weak at something, then put twice the work into it. I passed Cal 3 with a B because I spent so many hours making how to diagrams and most importantly, know how to teach yourself…understand your mind. I worked on a tugboat most my adult life until I realized I had to go back to complete my engineering degree and I’m still battling starting at MSU next Fall. If I can get A’s I know anyone can.

I am a graduate and just got a job. And boy am I grateful. You might ask what I am doing here. Well let me tell you, I am learning statics all over again even though I passed my class with B-. Because as soon as I got the job and as the time flows by I learned this. Almost every motion everything dynamic has some static knowledge to it. And this is necessary for me. For example during my college days I couldn't understood how the hell does two force members work but now i am back in here to learn all about it. Because to be good at my job, i figured i needed to learn this. Yeah they teach me stuff and so on. But to get into upper level of my work. I figured i should learn what statics is and learn for good. I know studying can be boring, it was for me too, still is. But hard things are never easy. This man is a treasure, i studied with his classes back in my college days. But know here i am back again. So my point is don't learn classes to get A's learn them to be able to apply them in real life scenarios. Thank me later

Dr Hansen, I greatly appreciate you. I’m currently a sophomore taking statics at TTU with a different professor. I don’t think I will pass this class the first time based on my first exam grade. But I’m watching your videos now and so is my dad (who used to be an engineer) and he works through your statics problems on KZbin so that he can help me. I’m so grateful that you can be a resource for the both of us! You are the best! Thanks!!

I haven't graduated but statics is the door to a world of other subjects that are part of the very wide and versatile degree that is mechanical engineering. Resistance of materials, dynamics, simulation of mechanisms, mechanical design, etc. At the point that I took the statics class I wasn't sure I wanted to be a mechanical engineer but thanks that I passed that class I eventually got to classes that I loved and that convinced me that this was my career. PS Jeff, you are a great teacher even for international students like myself your beam slope and deflection videos helped a ton on my advanced resistance of materials class

I am here after failing my calculus class. It feels like the whole world is against me today. I do not know who you are Dr. Hanson, but your message has motivated me to remember why I started doing this in the first place. I am a 34 yr old single mom of two. I am not the student you described but I am working hard for the same reasons… my family. I am not close to taking statistics but I know for sure when I get there I will remember this message. Sacrifices give us rewards and I’ve made it half way to a CE degree, I won’t quit now. Thank you!

I failed my solids course in the last year. There were quite many factors of such outcome, but the most important was the fact that I've underestimated the toughness of the whole course. So, don't repeate after me, fellas =) P.s. Had to take the course again and got (A-)!

I just had my “Mechanics of solid 2” exam 5 days ago. I think I’ll pass, hopefully. I normally would say distinction at least, but this tutor I have is a literal devil. Because of this coronavirus bullshit and that your doing the test from home, he made the test about 6x timers harder. I actually couldn’t believe it when I opened the book. And I’ve done fluids and thermo and got a distinction for both. So I’m not too bad at mechanical engineering because I put in hard work. Like I get making the exam 2x harder, maybe even 3x is acceptable to stop cheating. But I legitimately was baffled at the paper. I hope I pass 😂. I would’ve legitimately loved to do it normally as a normal test at uni without the extra notes.

Elijah Obeid, yeah, covid has brought many changes to our everyday life. In the winter term we’ve got an absurd situation when we had to write the open book exam under the webcam surveillance through Respondus Browser. I mean, it is an open book, what is the point? All in all, they’ve declined this idea and just made the exam way harder, so the open book was kinda useless at that point lol
@DeepakGupta-zs5sx
@DeepakGupta-zs5sx 4 жыл бұрын
@@Lelikzzz You have got a point there. The events of this past year have made it extremely difficult to learn as a college student in engineering. Everything is over remote over Respondus, which gives so many students the temptation to cheat and many do so relentlessly. Meanwhile, the students who take tests honourably get lower overall grades since they’re not cheating on every single test, which after everything is said and done with the class being curved down and grade shifts, means that people who don’t cheat end up barely passing. Not to mention, professors have become extremely inaccessible. Lectures are either over Zoom or recorded so asking questions is out of the picture. And with the number of students emailing them, they reply weeks later at times and office hours do not exist anymore. College has become completely about self-teaching. Which, as an engineering student, is a complete nightmare.

I did not pass statics back in 2009. I was distracted and did not put the time in to be successful. Dr. Hanson had the same conversation with me that time ago and it was what I needed to put my education and future in perspective. Engineering school was a grind, and I was not going to let anything stop me from obtaining my degree. The hard work paid off and now I currently enjoy my engineering leadership position in a Fortune 500 company and happily providing for my family. Dr Hanson’s channel is fantastic!

I remember watching Dr. Hanson's statics videos during the infamous spring semester of 2020. I ended up getting a C in that class and in Calc 1 before that. I remember thinking that I should quit if I couldn't even do well in the beginner classes. Well, I didn't quit and now I'm on track to graduate in December with a bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, a mathematics minor, and a 3.5 gpa. I recently landed my dream internship at BAE Systems for this coming summer and fall. It is a very rewarding major to study but also requires a lot of dedication and hard work. Last semester I put around 15+ hours of studying into some of my vibrations and heat transfer exams. It's all about setting a goal or finding some sort of long term motivation such as a company you want to work at when you graduate. I'll echo others when I say that Statics is a very critical course. You will use the theory from that class until you graduate.

Dr. Hanson is again spot on. I did pass statics back in 1976 and this is an important foundation class. If you are in any way intimidated by your Prof. /TA, see your Prof. and have a candid talk. This class, or any foundation class, is a building block and your Professors are in the best position to evaluate your work if you give them the opportunity. I took Network Analysis and Prof. Murray Babcock told the class as he handed back the final exam "... if you didn't get an A in this course you should reconsider Electrical Engineering as your curriculum". I had never been to see the Professor the entire semester so I didn't know if should bail from EE. Somewhere along the way, I bombed a Control Theory / Linear Systems class so I too repeated a class. By this point, I had learned Dr. Hanson's lesson a visited my Profs on a regular basis. Eventually, I thought I was going to be a Marine Engineer, a graduate program at that time, so I changed my major from EE to Mechanical Engineering. Didn't happen but I did receive an MSME in 1990, an MSIE in 1996, MS in Operations Research in 2002. If you do the math, I was getting a little long in the tooth to be doing the Night School business. You are never done learning and sometimes you need to go back and re-learn something from long ago. That's why I'm here. Keep motivated! And expand your network of contacts.

Dr. Hanson is exactly correct. Cancel your Chegg subscription and work a zillion Statics problems. Get help if you need it, but then continue working problems until you can work them confidently and correctly without help. Expect this to take about ten hours a week on average--some weeks it will be less but others it will be more. In the end, you will have learned Statics, you will have learned that you can do difficult things if you try, and you will have learned how to work hard at something. If you don't want an engineering degree enough to do that work, then change your major. Statics is *not* the most difficult course you need for an engineering degree, and the others will be made even more difficult if you come to them without learning Statics. The only way around Statics is through it.

I just passed this class and I am from a whooole different continent. I attend to Istanbul Technical Uni and I dont even take this class in English. Sometimes things dont work out for you. Its either about the distractions or your learning method as Dr. Hanson says. Maybe it is just that you are not using the most suitable learning method for yourself. So just go out there and try to find some other ways. Dont be stuck on the same thing for hours. If it doesnt feel right then it is not. There are a lot of ways to learn and a lot of people to learn from. I hope this will help you and please do not be afraid to search for new ways.

I passed statics from the first try .I honestly studied two days per week for 15 weeks and though i did that i got 50 lol. This course is really thick and difficult but now for me is very easy tbh..last semester was my statics one, this upcoming one I'm gonna be taking dynamics and mechanics of materials. Although I am preparing both of them but I face difficulty not in statics part but in mechanics like thumbtacks n bla bla...I am really missing statics after passing through statically indeterminate frames 😆. Statics is so fun tho. Failed calc 1 and physics 1 too but passed in 2,3. Next semester i will try desperately to get an A in both cuz after statics n calc 3 these subjects are nothing

I remember last semester during a statics exam I was working through a truss problem, we all called it the KKK problem because the truss was shaped like 3 squares with K's in the middle. I couldn't figure out that KKK problem right away, so I did the smart thing to do solved the rest of the exam and came back to it. I swear I spent the remaining hour just on that problem alone, then I realized that I should've used the joint method instead of the sections method. Right as I'm finishing the problem Professor calls out time and the remaining people start bringing him their exams, as I'm walking down the stairs to his desk I'm trying to finish the problem, and right as I'm about to give it to him he says "the tension in those two members should be the same as the first two", and then he's like "I think, I don't know, use your judgement" so I tell him "Well I'll trust you on this, or I guess I'll see you in Accounting 1 next semester". I went home thinking I got a C, and already started researching what classes I need to take for a Finance major. I thought well if I'm spending all my time on Statics and still getting a C I should just give up now. Then a week later when the exams are graded I see an 89 in the book, looking over the exam I see that I got the answer right (at the end as I ran out of time), so he gives me back those points and I'm at a 96. Thinking back on this it could've been my worse decision to give up after the first C on an exam, and then nobody guarantees that Accounting is easier than Statics, from what I've heard that's the hardest business class. My point with this whole story is don't give up even if you fail, because when you go in to retake it you already know what to expect, but when you change your major you don't know what to expect at all.

When I first started I was a C student and ended up dropping out. Coming back to school as an older man really changes your perspective on things. Yes the parties are fun. The woman are beautiful. But engineering majors challenges you to see in the long term and not the short term. I am now a straight A student but I only spend my time working, studying and going to the gym. I have gotten to the point where I say no to parties and going out so I can spend that extra hour studying to get ahead.
