I am bringing you the original used LGA771 modded Gaming PC with a X5460 and a HD6950.
This was supposed to have been released quite a while ago, however the 667mhz ddr2 memory held us back, so this time around we got some 800mhz stuff that enabled the CPU to get to 4ghz, and my oh my were the results impressive.
The LGA771 that plays games like Metro Last light at 1080p perfectly fine - and that's for a $125 PC! Incredible value!

In Romania the second hand market is just as bad as the retail. You occasionally find hidden gems but a 6950 is priced almost as high as current high end cards. This whole thing would be around 400$ at least.

I would suggest not to spread the thermal paste with your fingers, the oil from them could corrode the compound and it is also very toxic for your skin :)
@kevenharvey9711
@kevenharvey9711 8 жыл бұрын
+Gonzalo Bueno I would argue that the paste that comes in contact with the skin will stick to it, so that the paste that remains on whatever you wanted to cover will only have touched the paste that is stuck on your finger. There's probably still some contamination happening, but it's probably not as bad as you think.

+Keven Harvey not bad as he thinks? that paste might cause cancer :P

+Gonzalo Bueno Tested it pretty extensively off cam, basically the bare finger wins (look at that 4ghz OC in this video dude, on a ghetto zip tied, top down cooler at 22deg ambients getting 56-57 spreaded perfectly). Also especially with mx4 and as5, as leaves just the right amount on and as Kevin pointed out below, the initial spat on your finger acts as a barrier (and I also clean my finger with alcohol before and after pretty hard).

+SkyMix_RMT Well, it is rare, but I got myself a P5Q with a Q9300 plus aftermarket cooler and 4 GB of DDR3 for just around 35$ including shipping from eBay and everything is working out of the box, making it incredible value. Even if you already have anything except the board, this would be around 20 ish dollars at least if you resell the other components. But then again, these are auctions without too many bidders and I've had enough bad luck on eBay also. The best thing is, this build is running at 3,75 GHz CPU, 1000 MHz RAM no problem. When you add 2 more modules however, it has to settle at 3,6 GHz CPU, 960 MHz RAM to be very close to full stability.

Nice build. I love the LG775 platform. It has served me well for many years. I only witched to an i7-2600k for video rendering. For everything else it did (does) everything I need quite well. One thing you might want to consider adding to your cleaning arsenal is a nylon/plastic putty knife/paint scraper. I have found them to be invaluable for getting the dried and hardened thermal paste off of heatsinks and chipset cores. Unlike metal scrapers they won't scratch or gouge the surface. Here in the US I picked a couple of them up for less than $1 at my local True Value.

LGA 771/775 4 core CPUs don't have 12 MB of L2 cache. They have 2x6MB, and as those CPUs are in fact two dual core CPUs linked, and they require to synchronize cache memory on both units, the total amount of data they can store in L2 is 6 megabytes.

I love good value used computer hardware and used to think that Core 2 Duo's were the pinnacle of bang-for-buck used gear. Especially when I got my E8400 for AU$20 and overclocked it to a solid 4.2GHz at 1.3V (normally at that speed you'd need at least 1.38V to reach stability so this was pretty insane) But when I found out that the Xeon X5460 can be had for AU$40, there were zero complaints from me.

Someday can you do an overclocking guide/video on overclocking the 775 cpus? I had my Q6700 running at 3.1ghz. But after a couple weeks I blue screened while rendering a video. So I just reset to defaults since I don't feel comfortable pushing more voltage. Otherwise, great video though. That sure it a lot of value. Did you try running Fallout 4? :b

I'm still rocken a 775 with a Q9400 and I still really like that PC. I can still play Fallout 4 and GTA V on it and still get above 45FPS. I already had the mobo go that originally housed that CPU the EVGA 780i died so I tossed everything from that board onto a ASUS P5B-E witch is an older board and the CPU went from 1333MHz to 1066MHz but I don't see much difference in gaming. I'm just glad that CPU was able to still work even with an older board. All I had to do was update the BIOS.

I'm loving these used PC part builds mate! I challenge you to make a Gaming PC for $100, BUT it needs to be optimized for LAN parties; small case that's had a (sturdy) handle built on, with hooks to hold Power & Video cables on the side. Bonus marks for any other additions, and the case itself having a visual overhaul. The $100 would cover the PC parts + building materials for the case mods. Good luck :)

SandyBridge and newer L3 Cache is a bit faster to ALL cores than the L2 cache of the Core 2 architecture. That said, access times to that L2 cache is probably faster than access time to L3 or LLC Cache on the SandyBridge and newer i-core architecture, also 12MB total is a LOT - more than the 8MB of LLC/L3 on my 3770k, and cache is always much faster than RAM. And obviously 12MB to 4 cores means a dedicated 3MB of L2 per core, which again is a LOT! Again with my 3770k as comparison, it has 32+32KB x4 = 256KB L1 Cache 256KB L2 x4 = 1MB L2 cache, and 8MB shared L3/Last Level Cache (which IS on die, BTW - not that you said it was not, but the way you said it seemed to imply that L3 is not on-die) So that equals out to 9.25MB of total cache, and being that this is from all layers combined, and that LLC/L3 is shared equally, that means 2.31MB of Cache to each core - assuming all cache is completely filled and all cores are hitting all the cache simultaneously. Also - IIRC the L3/LLC of SandyBridge and IvyBridge over clocks WITH the CPU core, and last I read, at stock frequency an i7-2600k has some odd 130 GB/sec L3 cache speed to every core via the Ring Bus architecture, I can only imagine how much cache speed that means running at 4.6 GHz at ALL times as I have my system set! I turned off speed step entirely, keyed in my voltages (1.330 vCore but CPU-z reads 1.312 to 1.356) - even though I have turbo and all of its features completely disabled, whatever the case it works WONDERFULLY! (I know in my Haswell-e system, my 5930k I had to keep "cache speed" clocked at stock frequencies, where this does not seem to be the case with SB to IB at least! ) Or is that part of the LGA-2011 enthusiast platform? I have never had a SB or IB 2011 CPU... I can run Prime 95 forever and it will never overheat, and would probably take a week or so to get any kind of critical error! The hottest temp I have ever gotten - I air cool and my room was VERY hot when tested that time, but core 3 hit 86 C maximum. If I had to guess my room was between 25 and 26 degrees C, my CPU normally idles at 28 to 33 but that day were sitting closer to 36 to 40! Same deal with my GPU overclock, hottest it EVER hit was 78 on that same day running FurMark for 30 minutes. And I have my 770 running at 1266 boost at all times in games - though FurMark does make it dip down to 1175, but the 8 GHz effective VRAM stays full speed at all times - love that beautiful 256 GB/sec bandwidth! In this system the 770 I have is actually RARE from what I have read - as it has the Titan-style all metal Blower Vapor Chamber cooler!

why not try for a mac pro one, the 1,1's can be had cheap, upgrade the firmware to the 2,1 firmware and throw a pair of E5335's at it and a small overclock, bootcamp windows onto it and throw an okay ish gpu at it and you're set, i run a similar setup myself but i have X5365's and a 7950 for a gpu, landed the lot for less than £300 with an SSD :P

I am building a platform essentially like yours here except I'm using a P5K SE as a motherboard! Would it be possible for you to make a video explaining in detail the settings you used to turn that Xeon into a beast? It was rather quick.. The later the revision of the CPU the better it overclocks then? You got a SLBBA? Thanks for the brilliant content BTW. Oh and I bet the CPU loved DAAT confession.

Huge fan brotha, just curious, have you ran Fallout 4 on this Lga 771? Did you have to cut the motherboard to fit your processor in this MB?

so good man, there is really no excuse to at least try out PC gaming if you havent done it before, pc parts are so cheap and with good performance too. 125$? thats like 2 AAA tittles on consoles, and you can do so much more stuff that only play games

:0 ! you took a screwdriver to the factory-lapped copper block!? why... why did you do that? I know it's salvage parts but... some highly concentrated isopropyl should've been able to break that old thermal gunk down and you could've used a cloth.
