1278 mile Indian Springfield Review

Today we take a ride on the Springfield, park next to a beautiful river and talk about the pros and cons on the bike. Love this bike. I have the exact same 2019 model. Your right about the controls, blinkers and cruise are a stretch for my thumbs. I had the 16” apes and the Select chrome grips installed, much better set up for me. I just ordered a set of JES chrome wind deflectors to combat the wind buffeting. Had a set on my Harley and they make a world of difference. Most of the wind buffeting is coming from down low, right up your legs and hits you in the chest and underneath the helmet. Put your hand in front of your knee at 60-70 mph and you’ll feel it big time. Great review bud keep em coming.

Thanks for the comment Floyd. I come from many, many years on dirt bikes and I feel more at home with my arms down low. I did test ride a bike with a set of apes on it and it did have quite a different feel. It seemed to give you more leverage when turning especially at low speeds. But with bad shoulders from years of construction and dirt bikes my shoulders couldn't handle the angle that the apes put them in. I have noticed that if i put my hand next to the tank it would really cut down on the buffeting, so I think the lowers would do the trick just like you said. Lovely country in Idaho I come thru there every year from Alberta on my Triumph Trophy SE. Between Idaho, Montana, Washington and Oregon state then British Columbia and Alberta we are spoiled in the summer and fall for riding. Looking at a used one of these to put in the garage too. We are lucky to live here, it is some beautiful country. Haven't made it to Canada yet but hopefully I will soon. Those Triumphs are some cool bikes, although don't see to many around my neck of the woods. I am not even sure where the closest dealer is. I am editing a 4 parts series right now on a ride I did around south eastern Idaho and the first part will be out tomorrow. So if you have the time please watch it. Thanks for the review. As far as the buffeting, if you're in calm air, you will bet buffeting. I added lowers and it was a world of difference. You could light your stogie behind the windshield at 55MPH. LOL. Side winds you can't get rid of but the lowers are a must on this bike and the Vintage.

Had the same problem with wind coming up from the tank on my 2015 Road King so I bought HD's lower fork defectors and it helped tremendously, no wind coming up from tank made me want to ride more, longer. And I bought a taller windshield with a curved top, because I'm 6-4 and that helped a lot as well. But it still has some buffing can't get rid of all on bikes like you Springfield and my Road King but it knocks down like 80% of it. 😎🤘

Very nice review and some great scenery and pictures. Your thoughts and mine on the Springfield are very similar, but I only had it for a week last year riding around New England. I wish the model I had was equipped with the rear cylinder deactivation because that Thunder Stroke 111 was pretty toasty in slow traffic. The black color with all the chrome is just spectacular in my opinion. Thanks for the review and ride safe.

I only had the Springfield get uncomfortably hot once this year. We were stuck in a construction zone creeping along at about 5mph for about 3 miles and it was about 85 degrees that day. The rear cylinder deactivation was on and it might of helped some but I was on and off the throttle so much I am not sure it had the chance. That's one of the things that drew me to the Springfield was the chrome and that "old school" classic styling.Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care.

Nice review. I have 2017 which we have now ridden 26000k . Great heavy duty touring bike. Fantastic load capacity with top box. Ours has oil cooler and never had a problem with cooling. Oil cooler takes a little extra oil to get to correct marks. About 5.7 quarts. Negatives. For bike this expensive having to manually pump up rear shock by taking off cover is ridiculous. My BMW does this electronically. Front shocks are adequate when bike is fully loaded. Performance on dirt and gravel is only just adequate. The very high front tyre pressures don't help . Nevertheless handling through mountain roads fully loaded is outstanding. The bike stands up to extreme cross winds incredibly well. I have ridden in storms that blew down big pine trees. Very impressive indeed. Acceleration fully loaded 2 up is adequate this isn't a sports bike. Nevertheless it will cruise at speed effortlessly. Good torque for climbing when heavily loaded. Heated grips wonderful. Reliability excellent but plugging high amperage phone chargers isn't recommended. Headlights are adequate only. We have upgraded headlight to top of the range Indian lights that are better. Tyre life is exceptional. Buffetting. Yes I agree. Ditched standard and fitted lower reverse flared screen. Much better but you can still experience buffetting from following cars or trucks. I found face helmet open and well fitted was best. Overall opinion. Absolutely love our Indian. Will never sell her. After North America we are now exploring Australia.

I'm thinking of buying a Springfield but when you mentioned the vibration I don't know if I could deal with that. I ride a Triumph Tiger 1200 XCA adventure bike and the ride is smooth as glass, no vibration. The Indian Springfield is sure one beautiful bike, thanks for the review.

Thanks for watching. After living with the bike for a few years the vibration doesn't seem as bad as I may have made it out on this first review. If you get a chance to take one out for a test ride I would give it a try before totally writing it off. Meanwhile enjoy that Tiger as I will my KLR by going out and getting it dirty.

Beautiful bike, had an 18 and found the same issue with the controls. The helmet buffeting is definitely reduced almost eliminated by lowers on mine. Ride safe and enjoy that beauty

I agree with most every pro and con you mentioned. Especially about the reach to the handlebar controls. I think you were generous on your definition of seat comfort though. In my opinion a bike of this price range and designed for 2 up touring like the Springfield should come with a passenger backrest and touring grade seats.

You are right about the seat. As we started going on longer rides the seat started showing what it lacked. But at about $7000 cheaper than a Roadmaster I guess you have to give up something. Plus I have a few friends that say the stock seat on the Roadmaster is not very good either, so you would probably have to upgrade it too. I've had a chance to experiment with the ride modes on my my 2019 Springy. Since it's a drive-by-wire bike, they can program how the encoder in the throttle responds to movement. Basically, Sport mode is the most responsive. You twist a little, you get a lot. For example, in Sport mode, you might need 10 degrees of movement to accelerate at a decent clip, in Normal mode, that might be 20% and in Tour mode, it might be 30%. I'm just pulling those number out of the air but that's just the gist of it. Also, I'm not sure that it's linear. In Sport mode, I'd say you get a sharp peak at lower RPM's then it kind of flattens out a bit when you get in the higher range. I think if you had a cable, the response would be in line with the Normal mode.

Great review enjoyed it very much. I have my heart set on one just can not swing it right now to many projects going on. I saw a Indian classic in white with hard bags and have to say it was the best looking Indian but the weight capacity is less than the Springfield. I am a big guy also the rear shock travel is 3.7 inches compared to the Springfield which is 4.5 and this bike would be used for two up most of the time. My wife loves to go with me on our cruiser bagger . Have you rode a classic the front forks have more of a kick out just looks right to me but on paper the Springfield seems to suit two up better.

I know what you mean, it took us well over a year to get thing set up to get the Springfield. I ride 2 up probably 75% of the time(and I am not too small either) and it handles great as long as the shock is set up. I did a video on how to set up the shock for different riding conditions I think it might help. I did ride a classic on a demo day but it had apes and a 116 kit so it would be hard to compare to a stock bike, but I rode every bike there and none were really bad. Just a little different. The Springfield and the Chief Vintage (which are the most comparable)are on the same chassis. But there are some differences to the way they are trimmed. The Springfield has hard saddle bags which remotely lock where the Chief has leather that do not lock. The Springfield has passenger floorboards the Chief has passenger pegs. I'm a little disappointed in the seat. It's well made, great quality but rock hard! I just did 425 mile on my buddy's Street Glide and a sore ass was never an issue. Don't get me wrong, I love my Springfield, but Indian needs to work on their seats. I think the shape is good but they seem to stuff them with gravel.

I forgot to ask. What made you feel the belt alignment was off? Does bike still track straight? Did it not track straight before?

I don't feel any difference in how the bike tracks, but the belt is about a quarter of a inch narrower than the sprocket/pulley. So when it is out of alignment you can only see the teeth on the pulley on one side. After you get it all squared up it will ride in the middle and you can see the teeth on both sides when you spin the wheel. I hope I did OK explaining that. I also see you shared my video thanks for that. I will return the favor when I figure out how.

It does turn over pretty slow especially on cold mornings. I believe it is because of the higher viscosity oil that the is required. I have had the same thing happen on other bikes that use high viscosity oil. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care.
