This hi-end beast stopped turning on. It is very complex and weighs a ton. It was quite tricky to investigate the fault. Even a DSLogic USB logic analyzer by DreamSourceLab was used (perhaps was not necessary, but was fun anyway). It was found that the clock generator of the main MCU was not running. Also a reset was needed, which takes a secret combination of buttons on the front panel. It turned out that the power amplifier in this thing is a 10-channel Bang & Olufsen design based on ICEpower class D chips.

Always look forward to your troubleshooting approach, awesome skills! I learn things every time you shoot. Also, I really enjoy the crossover into digital realm investigations, as it's very relevant to the gear of our time, even if most of it wasn't designed for repair, i.e. "just isolate the section and replace it". Another one well done, thanks! - jrh

I am amazed at the complexity of this monster AVR. And the ironic part is that about 90% of its back connectors would remain unused most of the time as the end user would most likely just use couple of HDMI inputs. This means many if the daughter boards would also remain unused. But the protection circuit would check each of these boards and even the slightest fault even in any one of the boards would render the whole unit unusable. Just makes me wonder if the whole concept of an 'Integrated' amplifier actually makes sense. Btw, amazing troubleshooting this one. I rarely see repair techs inserting logic probes between two chips. Amazing work man. Wish you luck!!

Test those caps, since you are in deep enough into it already. I'd bet that even if many are weak, the unit isn't worth the cost of repair. The blue power led working after re-solder may be telling another story: there may be other failed solder joints. Unless it was a result of putting more boards back into the chain and completing that circuit. These units have more complexity than a home PC!
@vadimbellous8313
@vadimbellous8313 2 жыл бұрын
That unit is worth about $3500, so I think recapping it would definitely be worth it. It just needed a hard reset to get going again, although That LED might have just had a failed joint like you said. I've worked on a few high-end Vifa Stockholm speakers with a similar issue. After I picked apart the first one, I realized (after a long session of research) that it just required a hard reset as well. Bitter-sweet realization.😬😝

The only way to really know what happened is by having the firmware of the microcontrollers... or by doing reverse engineering. The resonator failure was the key to restarting everything. I would like to measure the capacitance near the resonator or the stray capacitance of the PCB. Can you make resonate the resonator outside of the PCB? Now it is working. Congratulations!. (By the way, is that Fluke one of the ones you've fixed? Nice instrument!)

2940uF instead of 3600uF, that's a tough one. If it's my amp I would leave it, but if it's for a business maybe yes. Isn't it more critical for digital circuitry, ie, ripple, than analogue stuff.
