Growing danger for kids on Social Media | MOMCAST with Emma Jade

17-year-old Jordan DeMay went from responding to a seemingly innocent message from a girl on Instagram to taking his own life, in a matter of hours, in what turned out to be sextortion. His father is sharing their nightmare with MOMCAST, along with what parents can do to start holding these social media companies accountable.
An Arizona mom has also joined in on the fight and is spreading the word about laws that can be passed to make social media safer for kids.

I’m 70 years old living with my daughter and family. My grandson is 11 and has an iPad that I gave him and they have KZbin on the TV. The language on the TV for children is filthy!!!! There’s got to be someway to regulate this!!! Thank you Emma Jade, mmI have a family member who is a photojournalist at 12 News Phoenix . I will be getting a hold of both Senators in Arizona because it’s important to me to protect my grandson. He mainly is into gaming but the dangers exist there too. I’ve always been a fan of yours and I thank you for sharing this story.

My son who is now 23 had this same thing happen to him, met a girl through tinder, sent a picture, she tried to extort him. Luckily, he said, send the picture, do whatever you want because I’m not paying you and it just kind of ended. BUT, my son was not so lucky the second time this happened. Met a “girl” online, they made it sound like she was visiting and was right down the street from him, but she needed gift cards to do this and that before they could meet. He lost over $700 to this scam. These two things happened within probably a two year period and I said never, ever, ever under any circumstance send pictures of yourself or money to anyone over social media. I don’t care if you think you know it is them. So my son was a full blown adult when these two things happened. My heart absolutely breaks for this father. 😢
