Warning only that he was bound and determined to barrel right on through regardless of alternate paths he could have taken presenting far less risk to everyone else involved. Even if it had injured the tractor trailer driver to veer off the road across the space to the right or to the left or he had been killed in the process it would not have caused harm to the children or drivers of vehicles in the oncoming lane if he had not been so lucky. Luck played against children’s lives is irresponsible to a criminal degree.

Exactly. Not much you can do once your brakes go out. I don't see how any of it could be his fault. Brakes on a tractor trailer don’t just stop working. What happened here was the truck drivers failure to do a proper pretrip and hitting the road with bad brakes. Also, he should’ve been able to drop a few gears and slow down. Jake brakes work wonders in situations like this.

It's reassuring to see every driver in the video take the proper safety precautions so nobody gets hurt or killed. Between the trucker blaring the horn in the distance as a warning to the Mercedes driver pulling off the side of the road and to the Silverado backing up to give the trucker enough space to maneuver around the bus. Anyone that doesn't understand the mention of charges for the tractor trailer driver, understand this: Before you drive your commercial vehicle, you are required to perform a Pre Trip Inspection. This means going around the vehicle, making sure everything is safe and in working order. Lights, tires, brakes, any components on the vehicle, all need to be functional and have a log that shows that you inspected it every single time you drive. One of the things you test is your brakes, and on big vehicles like this, typically that involves air brakes. You have to test that your air brakes don't lose air when held down, that they hold when applied, that they build pressure back up to the required PSI within a certain threshold, and that they stop smoothly without pulling to the left or right. Long downhill grades using only the brakes can cause brake fade or failure, which can cause a situation like this video. I know downshifting is an option that allows your transmission to help slow the vehicle, and I know engine braking is also an option, but my knowledge of engine brakes is limited since I only drive a school bus currently. Just remember, 80,000 pounds is a lot of weight and requires a lot of braking force to stop. Those brakes get hot, and they stop working as well. Sorry for the long, all over the place, comment.

@Anxious Opossum also things happen these machines are man made anything can go wrong with them at any given time meaning after inspection . Situations like this happen all the time and know one is at fault it’s how you handle the situation while in it . That’s why they also teach you about Counter steering Out of of accident or road hazard if something should occur “ this is exactly what everyone did in this situation” So give praise no one came out Gone or hurt, properly damage can be replaced not Lives.. But we all know someone gotta take the blame for what happen, just to make it look all good on paper…
@reneelemaster3290
@reneelemaster3290 2 жыл бұрын
This doesn't really apply to this accident. Breaks were not hot as there wasn't any smoke in the video so that is ruled out. The brake tests you are describing are really to test for air leaks. This truck didn't have this problem otherwise the brakes would have set and stopped the truck as soon as the air pressure dropped to an unsafe level. This is a complete failure, in the past, people would say maybe brakes were out of adjustment but these days we have auto adjusting slack adjusters that can't or shouldn't be done manually. That leaves random mechanical failure or poor maintenance which would fall on the company, not the driver.

FMCSA regulations requires every truck driver to perform a pre-trip inspection before that truck starts rolling (some state DOT's even requiring each inspection to be in written form and signed off on). such an inspection would include testing your service brakes to verify there is no pressure bleed and that air pressure can properly build up to operational PSI. if he did a proper inspection, then he wouldve definitely noticed that there was a problem. if his brakes just "went out" like he claims, then that means he had a massive air bleed which a pre-trip inspection wouldve caught. otherwise what he experienced wouldve been brake fade, which is the result of going too fast and not properly paying attention to your surroundings to give yourself enough time to react and stop.

@MasterOfTruck 9 ай бұрын
@@hugoseguin8040 the rate which air builds varies from truck to truck. its possible to have air bleed and still hold some pressure under these circumstances. im not saying the bleed is so bad the pressure is near 0. i was being generous with my point to explain how the brakes "went out" as the driver claimed because its plausible that the truck was able to hold enough pressure for the brakes to release and get it rolling, but trying to apply the service brakes would cause a significant increase of air loss from the bleed, making the brakes feel spongey and inoperable under the condition that there was still enough air to not release the emergency. when bobtailing, something like that can feel negligible due to the significant lack of weight. but pulling a loaded trailer is what made the issue far more apparent when the brakes need to hold more pressure and work harder.

Preventative actions, like charging the driver or the company, keep people alive. He got lucky because everyone involved was stopped and aware of his presence, people committed moving violations to cede roadway to a runaway vehicle that would’ve killed 4 or 5 children in front of their parents, there was even property damage to two vehicles. This is a video demonstrating luck and the need to be vigilant as others are irresponsibly driving and putting your life at risk. Wait for the day a semi brushes up against your sideview mirror at 60 mph, centimeters being the only space between you and the pulverizing force that is a runaway tractor trailer. We don’t NEED truckers if their irresponsibility causes scenes like this, especially considering the driver didn’t use engine breaks that even a rookie would know to use.

Rear end the family of four so they can’t avoid oncoming traffic or swerve into the oncoming traffic himself, instantaneously killing the next person with whom he makes contact. Prevention keeps the brakes in working condition with 40 tons of steel moving anywhere between 30-85 mph. 🏅Semi driver was laying on that air horn, he did everything to avoid catastrophe, nobody was hurt, he did great! Pickup driver deserves a medal! Holy f*k! Everyone involved did great. If the trainee bus driver did move ahead the bus would not have gained enough speed to avoid collision in time. Someone was looking down on everyone that day. My nerves r still in shock! I hate that they would even think to press charges on that driver after viewing that video evidence. If you ask me, he is one of the best drivers out there! He thought to alert everyone around him once he realized the issue & remained in as much control as he could of the situation, had super quick reflexes and decision making skills and managed to avoid a catastrophe and saved countless lives that day. 🏅 P.S. Just my opinion here but the media should have phrased that differently, rather than the way they said it, they should have just said something like "the police r investigating to see if charges, if any, will be filed" or something not pointing such direct blame at the driver who obviously did not in any way shape or form do that on purpose.

She then took them to court to ask for the same "just for medical bills" and ended up with more for the fact it wasn't nearly the first time McDonald's had an incident like that with way more than just her. @@SpoookyGamezThere's a huge difference between hot Coffee and what they were giving out. The burns you are thinking of are considered 1st degree burns. Burn off a taste bud or two, maybe a bit of redness on skin it falls on, that's what would be considered 1st degree burn. So yes, I agree that those burns can happen, kind of commonplace and you can expect. But 1st degree burns on your tongue/mouth/skin is pretty much a put ice on it if you want to, it'll get better on its own-- it's a very different story than what their coffee was doing. What was happening with McDonald's coffee was that it was causing 3rd degree burns upon contact. In 3rd degree burns, skin goes black, it chars, slips off. There's a big difference. Coffee that does the same damage that fire directly against the skin does instead of the average red patch on the skin is a definitely way too hot. Search up 3rd degree burn. If a coffee can give you that (and it always sends you to a burn trauma center) within split seconds of contact, it's not something to be expected to expect and it's unreasonable to. 1st degree is home treatment. 3rd degree is thousands upon thousands of dollars and weeks in a burn trauma center. I don't blame her for holding McDonald's accountable for it.

You can hear him pumping the brakes, downshifting, jostling the truck left and right looking for an avenue of escape, sounding his horn, his adrenaline going. He doesn't panic, or over-react. He deals with it, literally and figuratively head-on. Possibly saving lives. But wait, he's not heralded as a hero. The other pickup driver is, though. The truck driver may face charges. That means 1 of 2 failure scenarios had to be a factor on brake failure on both the truck and the trailer and the only one possible is the brakes weren't properly adjusted! Here's why...The other scenario would be that just about half of the SPRING BRAKES on the drive axles on the truck and trailer axles would have to be broken and not doing their job in this emergency! Springs don't need air to function, they only need enough air to hold the brake shoes off the brake drum! So are you telling me that he had to have missed that many broken Spring Brakes in his brake chambers that morning, or did he just indicate that everything was acceptably safe to operate in his inspection so he could keep working? Not going to convince me! The truck was unsafe to be on the road! Yes he "Guided IT" around the obstacles but he did not have control because he could not stop the truck!

Careful look at the sequences of the video shows that the Mack truck driver actually _sought to avoid the school bus,_ long before he got close to it. He changed lanes very *early on,* allowing the Chevy driver to see that the tractor trailer was heading in his direction, thereby prompting him to reverse his pickup. It appeared as though he would have struck the dark Chevy pickup more immediately rather than the school bus, because the truck was heading straight in the direction of the Chevy pickup. So, in a way, the Chevy driver actually saved himself more immediately than he did the nearby vehicles. Still, who knows; had the Mack truck collided with the Chevy pickup, there might have been residual/recoiling movements of both the Mack truck and the Chevy from that impact, possibly causing the trailer of the Mack truck to move in an unpredictable direction, including one that could have impacted the school bus.

It depends on the type of brake failure. If it was loss of air pressure then yes, dynamiting the brakes could have helped. And it would not throw him through the windshield if he was heavy. I think it was over 80,000 with that many axles. It is most likely brakes out of adjustment and in that case pulling the parking brakes will not do anymore than standing on the pedal. As for putting it in the ditch, that is a last "DITCH" solution and i am sure he was thinking about it before seeing that opening. It is not something that any driver should do unless all else fails. Once it goes of the road, there is not much control and he could have plowed into a house. The guy in the pickup truck and the tractor trailer are both heros, the guy in the pickup didn't care about a lawsuit for backing up into the other car and the trailer gave plenty of time for people to move. I'll give them both props for being smart enough to move into positions where nobody was killed.

An exact example of why to be a defensive driver and not expect everything to be going perfectly for all other vehicles. I've had to honk my way to let others at an intersection know I'd lost control as I slid through a black ice patch. Thankfully all the drivers seemed to understand what was happening and waited for my dumbass to get some tred grip again, lmao.

P.G.T is out of columbia station ohio absolutely horrible on maintaining there trucks. Just a few years back one of there trucks was trying to stop and was hanging over the retaining wall in cleveland. Source no brakes. This is the drivers fault as much as the company's. I've towed many of there trucks and their equipment is old and not safe at all.

Great job to everyone involved. Including the driver, bus driver and the civilians on the side

Truck driver=not paying attention. School bus driver=stopped 8 way flashers operating. Big yellow school bus=children on board. Guy in pickup truck=deserves a special award or hero award for fast thinking. My point to all this:everybody blames "my brakes failed" I say b.s. Your truck has an emergency brake, why wasn't it used or applied. Thank God nobody got hurt in this incident. Hopefully truck driver looses his trucking license.
