Definitely within a thousand feet. The interesting thing about that strike though is the thunder was not nearly as loud as most really close strikes I've experienced. I wonder if it was a leader that failed to connect and was branching off of the main bolt. Usually strikes less than 1000 feet away are extremely loud.

here in Chester NY it was a brief 40-50 gust with 60+ in many spots near and just to the NE and by your filming location as well but in Goshen there was a cell on radar about 3 miles in front of squall and it didn't look impressive on radar but you could see a lot of rotation on the time laps I took in the midlevel's of the storm but given the fact it didn't look all that good on radar I stayed put (mistake) we drove through Goshen the next day and it looked like a warzone with countless trees down being massive in size roofs and siding peeled it looked like 90-100 mph winds moved though there it was insane likely a microburst/ downburst... but anyway fantastic footage keep it up!!!

my home town! I’ve never seen storms like this around here. I live closer towards Albany now and we didn’t see anything like this. the damage was so bad the next morning the chatham school district had to close on the second day of classes.
@storm12weather Жыл бұрын
This day was interesting. The large scale setup favored some severe storms, but it was much worse than I expected. The downdrafts in this line of storms were able to tap into a lot of downward potential energy. Basically dry air getting entrained into the downdrafts allowed them to accelerate downward faster than usual and produce very strong winds. I go into a bit more detail in the video description. As far as Chatham, Yes, that night the damage was extensive. But with it being dark with no power and with emergency responders already arriving I didn't want to get stuck or get in the way, so I came back the next afternoon. I have to say I was impressed by how much clean up had been done in just those 12 hours. The roads were already mostly cleared by then.

@@storm12weather It was a crazy storm, I know people who didn't have power for a few days because they had soo many trees down in certain spots. On July 4th we had a severe storm come through the Schodack Landing and Stuyvesant area and there was swaths of trees just taken down by 100 mph straight winds. the bulbs in those parking lot lights ( shoe box luminares ) are probably shot now, the combination of the arc tubes being violently rattled round and constantly cutting and restriking probably has shortened they're life span quite a bit. in any case all those lights will need to be relamped (to have they're bulbs replaced) which will only ad to the cost of the damage.
@alexplaysii2 ай бұрын
It looks like they’re LED lights, so probably not.
@georgewills-ek1gg2 ай бұрын
@@alexplaysii hmmm, they might be, if so, they turn off very strangely. they behave a lot like HID fixtures, so if they are LED (light emitting dismay), then they would look great for other installations due to the ability to mimic an HID lamp. (kudos to whoever designed them, if they are LED)

@bostonelevatorsaviation Based on observations this complex developed a pretty impressive rear inflow jet. The strongest gusts coincided with waves of extremely heavy rain and rain cooled air. There wasn't much rotation in these storms but I could see how the sudden gusts could look almost tornadic. Some of them likely approached 70 mph.

Great footage! This is how storm videos should be. No narration to distract from the sounds and visuals of the storm. Also, great camera work;focusing in a specific direction and not panning around all the time which is annoying and makes other videos hard to watch. I have nothing but good things to say about your effort and results.

I really appreciate your compliments! I've tried to hone my videography skills over several years of chasing and filming storms. I try to provide several angles but eliminate panning while filming. When I want a new angle, I usually stop and then start recording again. Or I'll make sure to cut out any footage that is too shaky. The more I've chased, the more I've developed my own personal filming style. My objective is to get the viewer as immersed in the storm as possible without actually being there. 🙂

That's actually a power flash from lines going down. You can see more at 4:45, 4:54, and 4:58. It can be hard to differentiate them from lightning but after a while you get an eye for it. They usually have a dimmer, longer lasting glow. Another giveaway is the fact that they light the clouds from below and you sometimes see oranges mixed in.

You could estimate it. The storm dropped about 1 inch of rain over the area in about 20 minutes. If you take a square mile, that's about 4 billion square inches. Assuming a depth of water of 1 inch that's also 4 billion cubic inches. There are 231 cubic inches in a gallon. So that's about 17 million gallons in a square mile.
