@Matt-oq8li10 ай бұрын
As a shuffler and as others have pointed out, it is crucial to also include the "T-Step" along with the Running Man as the foundational moves. These two together is what makes shuffling and the illusion that one is gliding through the dance floor. Also as someone from the Chicagoland area, "Mike n Ikes" is not a name used in shuffling. As you said, it has a lot of names and shuffling commonly uses "Crab" like from hiphop or "Heel Toe", but the name "Mike n Ike" is directly referencing Chicago Footwork. While the move is very similar, the name and style differentiate the two. Look up Chicago Footwork by King Charles and Pause Eddie and you'll see where "Mike n Ikes" comes from. I love that the video is showing a glimpse of the history of each dance so it's important to know these terms and where they came from! Otherwise cool video!

Heel is different from Mike n ikes. In funk social dances from 60s/70s this move was the Watergate or the funky chicken. Even further back to Vernacular solo jazz its connected to the Mashed potato or the twist

Regarding the bit of history provided by the ballet dancer. Back when I was 16 I was given a school assignment to write about the history of a dance form. We were music students and this teacher was a dancer. I picked the only one I could find books about in the library which was ballet. In my short essay I wrote basically an extended version of what the dancer in this video said. About the origins in Italy. That teacher not only failed me but berated me in front of the whole class saying "everybody knows that ballet is french!!". After all these years I feel vindicated. (This was in 2001).

I tried different sports, but no one really satisfied me as much as breaking. So I started back in 2018 and I'm 5 years in, not gonna stop. I'm kinda bad at powermoves so I focus more on footwork and I am introducing a lot of healthy toprock in my routines. I recently decided to join a hip hop course from the same place I go to, so that I can make my moves even smoother and I generally wanted to regain touch with other kinds of dance. I recently rediscovered popping and I wanna get influences in my style, together with shuffling.

Would be sweet to see a follow up with how these forms of dancing have opened opportunities for these dancers! Who, what or where! 🙌🏻

As a shuffler I do have to add one major thing that was overlooked. T-step. I'm not gonna be a gatekeeper like the old shufflers were saying that "its not true shuffling unless there's t-step" but its equally criminal to only include running man as the main step and completely overlook the t-step given how fundamental it is/was to the origin of the style.

I LOVE THIS VIDEO SO MUCH! I've been waacking for 20 years! Trained with Lollipop and other old school pioneers! Fred Mayor did a beautiful job introducing my beloved style.
