David Tay it does actually, changes the characters choices, decisions, meaning of the character, the backstory of the character will have to change as a result of this big change. He makes a big deal of keeping the character the same but this is a big change, wether it's good or bad, we shall see.

Well, the mummy was never a really emotional, or "grey" villain. It was basically a zombie. I agree that they should make a point of keeping the characters as close to the original as possible, but with the mummy, I think they should focus on giving it an actual character first.

Actually, I think this video may have spoiled The Mummy. The rest of this video they talk about adding monsters and people becoming monsters. I think Tom Cruise's character will destroy the old mummy, but in turn gets her powers and becomes a new mummy himself.

A big misconception is that he monster's name was Frankenstein. In the book, which the movie was based on, the monster had no name and was just referred to as the monster or him or it and only becomes known as Frankenstein because it kills the doctor in the beginning. Frankenstein was actually the doctor that created the monster and survives most of the book.

Many of the elements and fundamentals that define the classic Universal horror movies are NOT in the recent Mummy movie (it spends too much time building a universe than building fright, emotion and tension), which strangely contradicts everything Kurtzman has talked about in this clip.

It wasn't supposed to be apart of the universe, but then universal got the idea for it, so they shot that post-credits scene with Dracula and the master vampire in the modern world. Unfortunately, it only did okay at te box office and the reviews were awful, so they scrapped it and started with The Mummy instead. I feel bad for Luke Evans because he was pretty good in the role, but the movie wasn't good, so I don't feel to bad. Also, apparently Dracula will still be involved in the universe in some way.

The problem with Russell Crowe in the Mummy is that you're not supposed to introduce Cruise into this world yet. You're supposed to focus on making us love the current story individually first, then you bring everything already introduced into the mix in the teamups and only sooner if it's already been a few films. The reason why Iron Man worked so well to bring that character into the MCU is that that film is fantastic on its own. It's not until later that the audience is even introduced to the idea of a teamup, making it that much more meaningful, impactful and shocking. That film would have been almost (if not completely) ruined if they tried to introduce him to others as blatantly and obviously that soon as they did with the Mummy. Your heart was in the right place, but you have no idea how to properly do this.

Just a few points, the monsters in the 30s and 40s were not played by movie stars - they became movie stars because of their performance. This is why Lugosi, was typecast and Karloff had a very varied career as he was by far the better actor. If you going to up-date, for example Frankenstein, the creature cannot have a flat top head and you would have to explain why bolts in his neck in the 21st Century. Decide whether you are remaking or up-dating. The other reason why these films still work is because of the Gothic atmosphere they created while the humour evolved from the story. The Mummy was a Tom Cruise film when it should have been about the Mummy. Gothic Horrors are basically morality tales and stories that have more meaning that most films these days can put in one scene. I want a Dark Universe, it could be what cinema needs but go back to the Gothic tradition.

The Universal Monsters were not the first shared universe. The studio had a bunch of character properties and character actors under multi-year contracts. What made the original monster movies was that they were about the monsters and the dichotomy that they presented. They raised the question of what it was to be human. They showed us that although the humans called them monsters, the humans acted more like monsters themselves. These new monster movies are just about hoping that spectacle and big name actors pulling in viewers. I'd love it if this whole monster-verse worked out, but I just can't see it happening.

I'd rather a sci-fi shared universe from Universal. Such as Back to the Future, E.T., Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Flash Gordon, Jurassic Park, etc. I really have no interest in the Dark Universe, because I've never really cared for the Universal Monsters. Heck I even care more for Godzilla and King Kong, than say Universal's Dracula or Frankenstein. Although that doesn't mean I don't like Bram Stoker's Dracula or Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The original stories are way better than anything Universal has done to Dracula or Frankenstein and in my opinionUniversal's sci-fi movies have always been better than their monster movies.

Poor Kurtzman, he just wanted the monsters of the 30's to be reborn to our new age, wanting to recreate the feel of the old films. Now, "The Mummy" had flopped and some people are somewhat disappointed and some people are angry! Heck, I thought the film was O.K., but the best thing in this movie is Dr. Jekyll! I hope the Dark Universe doesn't fail like DC did because they had a rocky start as well!

Kurtzman keeps calling the monster by the name of Frankenstein. Good luck with him heading the dark universe.

For the record "God's and Monsters" was not a biopic it was historical fiction, the story revolves around the real life director James Whale befriending a fictional character (played by Brendan Fraser) during the days leading up to his suicide .

End-credit scenes are not owned by Marvel. Studios need to stop being afraid of doing scenes at the end of movies. People love post-credits scenes. They're fun.

I just saw the mummy and I didn't think it was horrible, it was decent and the action was good and yes it was a little rough but it's a start they don't know where they are going with this universe yet. I hope they don't cancel the universe, I would watch all of them. Bring them on, make them better, I'll enjoy

I kinda feel like maybe they should start with Van Helsing. Have 3 film trilogy that introduces Dracula (Big Bad), Frankenstein, and Wolfman. Then do a team up movie adding in The Creature from The Black Lagoon, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Mummy. Maybe do period pieces for the original trilogy then move to modern day after that.

All those saying these movies should be scary: The scariest scenes in Frankenstein were the humans reaction to a monster.

This is going to be great, I was brought up with these films on TV, good idea making them big budget films as this is going to get the younger generation back into this genre of film and the classic books

The dark universe should not create much of a background for the monster because the only reason that people get scared is because they don´t know the history of a monster, as a result they don´t know how far the monster will go. When no one knows the history of the monster they start to fear it because they have not seen it or heard about it. For example when I watched Stephen King's IT, I feared it because I didn't know much about it so I didn know what to expect that the monster was going to go, even though that the movie showed that Pennywise has been in the same town for a couple of centuries I still had no idea about how the creature came to Earth, why it came to earth, and if he came with more alien spiders. So as a result it scared me.

Who's playing Abbott and Costello is what I want to know... 😂 Actually, I love the classic 30s horrors. It's weird everyone says that gothic horror stuff isn't good for now and yet millions still watch them every year. And have done for 80 years. You can't make these monsters scary in the modern world really, so why not focus on making the monsters 3d characters. This is actually what the best early universal movies did even though the trailers suggested otherwise. Karloff was so HUMAN as the monster and as the mummy - that's what made him so wonderful in those movies, in my opinion.

Mummy was crap, but I'm positive that wasn't Kurtzman's fault. He actually seems like he knows what makes these classic films good, and I want to see what he can do now that this universe has been established. Universal is definately to blame for the new Mummy; remember, 2 different directors walked away from the project before Kurtzman picked it up, and Universal had 6 people write the script. Kurtzman definately knew it wasn't going to be good but I think he wanted to just get past this messy point so that he could then work on the good stuff. I hope Universal decides to let him continue the Dark Universe, he seems like he has a real passion for it.
