Brilliant video again Rory. I hope your mum likes train travel as much as you do. She should give us a wave.

That's some trip Rory!! You look amazingly un "travelworn" at the end ha ha. Also, considering it is a Friday the 158 to Thurso looks very empty! Hope you enjoyed your visit.

I think I’ve gotten used to spending all day on trains 🤣

Epic trip, and lovely views as the Sun set. To do it all in one go was an achievement.

It was certainly tiring towards the end!

That note on the Inter7City first class is very true. With it being so cheap it gets very busy and is tricky to get a seat as a group
@RorysTravelsАй бұрын
I was surprised when we had a look and there was almost no space left! Luckily the standard class seats are pretty comfortable for the long journey!

Great video! I also went to that pizza express in Inverness! That service to Wick is beautiful. I stayed in the Premier Inn: Thurso and saw your exact service from my hotel
@RorysTravelsАй бұрын
We stayed in the Premier Inn as well, it's really convenient being right next to the train station!

Another well composed video to my favourite part of the UK with amazing scenery. I very much like the historical info you provide as well...not been to Thurso for many years so must try and get back there sometime. Also the notes at the end are a good idea... idea pinched from Steve Marsh's videos eh ??? Even so I do like that as it allows you time to study the info especially prices etc...
@RorysTravelsАй бұрын
Thank you! An idea taken from the best! I think it is a good place to add that extra detail you wouldn't otherwise get.

Here's a suggestion for you! As UK citizens don't need a Passport to visit the Irish Republic, why not buy yourself a GBP 57:50 single Rail and Sail ticket (Route "Irish Ferries") from Stamford to Dublin via Holyhead, spend a day or two exploring this vibrant and cosmopolitan city, and then travel First Class on the international "Enterprise" train on its two-hour journey up the east coast to Belfast? You could then sail and rail in reverse, taking a Stena Line ferry from the Northern Irish capital to Birkenhead and then catching a train (or two) from Birkenhead back home to Stamford!
@RorysTravelsАй бұрын
What an amazing idea! This is definitely something I would love to do, so I've added it to my little notebook of suggestions and hopefully will be able to do it sometime in the near future!

25 years ago now, but my then gf used to get the daily train from Preston to Brighton, which had started in Edina, bc she didn't want to faff around in London. You could smoke back then though.

Lucky! Getting your connection at Edinbro with seconds to spare! On most of my train trips there, I've been held somewhere to the East of the station for around 10 mins, even if running late! Late running and other issues seem so endemic that I'd never rely on a connection with less than an hours gap, unless there was no choice, or good alternatives in case of failure. But I'm obviously more pessimistic than you!
@RorysTravelsАй бұрын
We were very lucky! I would usually keep to the safe side like you and give at least an hours connection time but due to the off-peak ticket times that was the earliest LNER train we could get!
@roblawson5617Ай бұрын
I'd have sent the pizza back with a comment about it being rather well done....
@andrewclark8630Ай бұрын
Thank you for that. Most enjoyable. The trains were pretty much on time - hardly a cause for great national shame.
@RorysTravelsАй бұрын
Thank you! Totally agree with you, and there are always alternative routes to get to your destination.

LNER still have buffet cars ? GWR have a trolley its rubbish lol

GWR certainly need to improve their catering on longer-distance trains

Living in Manchester 23 years and preferring to go “SailRail” via Holyhead to visit family in Ireland near Dublin, the U.K. railways are not fit for purpose - what’s really needed is an external company from the far east (like China, Japan or Taiwan) to be given direct and complete control by the U.K. government, relevant laws passed in Parliament and all other U.K. rail bodies abolished, no interference allowed, no rail strikes allowed, their being given set annual amounts per year (performance related) to improve the railways for at least 30 years, to get rail fares down and standards of service up, rail projects completed in half the time and for half the costs, all profits invested back into the railways
