I actually enjoyed the show and manga. I feel that it was a more character-based than plot-based story, but that's what made me like it. For me, it was about the senselessness of violence and the struggles and irrationalities that come with life. Also you were spot on with the weird hairstyles, the whole point was individuality and nonconformity.
