My 40+ Amaryllis live in 9 or 11 litre pots as their root system can grow up to 1m long and leaves up to 1,5m long. They are all under grow-lights. No forced dormancy with digging them up and putting them in a cool basement. They go dormant themselves if they want and last winter only 7 did that. And they are doing amazing. All have 7-13 leaves and flower with at least 2 flower spikes. Thanks grandma for infecting me with the "hippe bug"! May you rest in peace. 😊
@cmosher95642 ай бұрын
ooh, that's good to know. I divided my crew up this year and experimented. I put 1/3 outside for the summer and they're now in the basement, 1/3 stayed under grow lights and are now in the basement, and 1/3 are under lights with no dormancy. I'm interested to see what happens!

Something I do to help keep my plants growing upright is to regularly rotate the pots so that the foliage is facing away from the light source. This causes the plant to "reach" in the opposite direction and gives all the foliage a better chance of getting the light it needs while also keeping it from becoming bent in one direction.

I live in the Southwest USA with south facing windows, so in winter I actually have to be careful about plants getting *too much* light as the angle of the sun gets lower and creeps further into the room. All my cacti and succulents come inside and take over the windowsill space, and the other plants move back a bit to get a little direct light without getting sunburned.
@anah9288Ай бұрын
yes! i have a ground level apt with a covered patio. my indoor plants think winter is actually summer due to them getting so much sunlight through the glass in winter and none in actual summer. they grow the most and if they flower, they bloom during winter. the temp is about the same ~70, but heat vs ac, so i think they also like the warmer air. i got some 6500k bright white blights like quite a few people suggested, and it’s been waaaay too much for my plants. i got a 4 pack, thinking 2 per shelf, but I’m only using 1 per shelf, and debating going down to just one at the top. all my UV reactive plants are solid pink/purple. i was so worried they wouldn’t be effective enough that i never considered they could be Overly effective 😂 there was an adjustment period, but my plants have all adjusted now. just in time for the sun! haha

I live in South Texas, zone 8b/9a, so we went through October in the 90s (32-35c+). So I've had to trim back some of the landscaping plants (flowers). I keep my house plants outside because they just go bonkers outside - because my indoor cat doesn't chomp them. Otherwise, when temps get 40f (2c) or below they go into the garage. We average 13-15 days of freezing temps. IME, winter hibernation does wonders for plants and they get ripping in spring!

Another useful handy tips video from Mr Sheffield. I must admit I prefer the plastic "moss" poles as you have used in this video to the choir variety. However, to stablize them I fill the bottom, upto soil level with stones. I always water my plants with rain water taken from one of my water butts. During spring and summer I do add a little fertilizer every other watering but during the darker months I just use pure rain water as rightly or wrongly I think that rainwater has some built in nutrients though I have never tested this.

Your philodendron red that you pruned for new plants, and most of your plants in the nursery pots will all be happier with much bigger plastic pots that can be fitted into the nice porcelain pots that they were or are in. Less problem for any fungal attacks too. Also, next time instead of pruning your cut out from all extra leaves, it could be better just cut into two pieces and for two new plants instead of one new plants. As I did that always.

Totally normal but not necessarily ideal. They throw those when water stressed, usually by letting them dry out too much. You can let cras. ovat. soil dry out a bit, but avoid letting it dry out entirely. Also, to quote plants by Krystal, drown that hoe when watering. I mean fully saturate the soil. I water some of mine right in the sink. Then let it do its thing. Mine usually require weekly soakings. Also, make sure to lighten your soil with some perlite or vermiculite. You want the water to sluice through rather than pool. It's a good time to propagate when they throw those roots. Cuttings actually do really well in just water if you change the water weekly. They won't grow much, but they'll live and look pretty interesting if you use a clear pot (i use canning jars).

I want to get growlights for my houseplants but I really don't understand the significance of Watts. If a plant doesn't live next to a window, how much Watts does it need?

10w bulb is a good start. 30w give you more coverage
