#13ReasonsWhy is likely the best and greatest TV show based on high school reality in regards what many teen students suffer around the country (and other countries world wide [just do some research]). Or, simply one of the greatest and best TV show of all time. The only reason why it got a lot of backlash, is due to Selena Gomez' being part of the show. We know that the Spanish name is hardly tolerated in this country, but the Mexican name/background even less. 13 Reasons Why, for those who ACTUALLY care for others who suffer the multiple types of harassment in at school, has given the world an educated way at looking at these matters. It has given attention for them for open discussion, when such things were/are being ignored. Bullying, rape, violence, etc., are part of some peoples lives as jr. high through college students, and without a strong voice to be heard world wide, it would keep being put on a shelf and let criminals get away with such crimes and the victims will keep suffering since the victims tend to be the seeming weakest. The ones who join the backlash movement on anything, are the ones who want chaos and crime to keep happening to others. They come out as "social" media police when its convenient for them, when it suits their biases and prejudices, when it happens to only those they identify with. I guarantee had Selena's name not been in it, the show would have been LOVED by the great and overwhelming majority, it would have even likely won various Emmys. Thankfully, there still remains on this planet some, which can be many, who are loyal to honesty and reality, and we know 13 Reasons Why to be a very, very good show. This show demands attention. It demands intellect from viewers. It provides intellect to viewers. It provides the real deal and raw deplorable circumstances many such aged-students live through. Yet, the ones speaking out against the show, are the ones who show they really and actually don't care, and what they do care about is they would have wanted someone else other than Selena being part of the production. They instead make information for those who suffer more difficult to access. It helps make those who suffer less likely to seek help. It helps schools be less likely to take action against the criminals.

Season 2 - more rape culture, bullying is bad, school shootings can be stopped with a good heart to heart Season 3 prediction - Abortion rights, how rich people can get away with anything, and more bullying is bad storyline. Oh, and Clay finds another girlfriend who is emotionally unstable in some way.
@KookiesNolly6 жыл бұрын
by the way, Netflix released a "behind the scenes" or something like that (the same kind of stuff they did with stranger things) where they invited a psychologist and she's discussing some topics with one of the writers and directors of the show. She literally said that what clay did at the end was WRONG. She said people should just call the police in this situation instead of risking their lives. I can definitely see young teenagers trying to emulate Clay because he's presented like a hero in this scene and getting themselves killed as a result. It's just one of the many things that the show gets wrong about the topics it's trying to present. It advocates the exact opposite of what should be done because the writers and just fucking everyone involved in the making of this garbage show are too lazy to google this shit. GOD!
@gendercryptid6 жыл бұрын
Eli N.S yeah I heard about that. It is actually hilarious since I am sure they had people saying do not write that shit into the show and the writers just ignored it because they think they are making some amazing PSA show. Like dudes, you aren't. You are writing shit. It's like no one on the writing staff has dealt with mental illness, sexual trauma, bullying, or even remembers what high school was like. Still can't believe it was greenlit for a 3rd season.

If you're stuck in a room with the shooter, then talking IS THE ONLY OPTION, so it's not stupid to try it. If you're not, you shouldn't just run into them in order to try to make them stop *by the powah of luv.* You should get out of the school before they catch you and call the police.

Thoughts; I’m not an expert but the legal case against the school was weak, as presented. I wasn’t at all surprised by the verdict. In the real world the parents would have settled and taken that lesser victory.~ I found the extreme loyalty shown to Bryce by his teammates to be not well supported by the script. Most of it seemed based on self-protection, which is understandable to a point, but I think some of those guys would have bailed on him pretty quick irl.. Monty’s loyalty is explained late in S2, but mostly to dramatize Bryce’s pathologically manipulative behavior. ~ S2 was so over the top that I fully expected it to end with Tyler committing mass murder. Him surrendering the gun actually seemed ludicrous at that point.

Yeah, I was kind of actually upset that Tyler didn’t follow through with the mass shooting. School Official: We're not letting you talk about suicide because some people may admire what she did and commit suicide themselves. Clay: Lol, you're wrong, silence doesn't help. Something dawned on me while editing. Hannah talks about yawning at pretentious people who like 2001: a Space Odyssey, a not necessarily exciting film with that has dense text. This makes her seem like a #relatable, edgy teen, but it's actually a character inconsistency when you consider her interest in poetry, another art form also considered pretentious

This is especially true in the last episode, where, after the scene where Tyler has been assaulted in the most graphic and graphic and horrific way, they cut straight to a "you didn't think I'd let you go" cutesy love scene between Tony and his boyfriend. How could they possibly think that was a good decision?

One things that really disappoints me is that Brian Yorkey (the creator and show runner) has created one of the most beautiful works of fiction that deals with mental illness and suicide (Next to Normal, it’s a musical) that is so incredibly moving and I cry every time I listen to the soundtrack, but then he goes and writes this which has all the wrong messages and overdramatizes everything and it just hurts me. One thing I didn't understand was in the last episode where Jessica and those other women were in court talking about experiencing sexual assualt. Like, this all seemed to be during Bryce's trial, which didn't make sense. How do any of those stories, besides Jessica's, have any bearing on the case? They all seemed so contrived too, like all of a sudden every female character in the show experienced sexual assault. It was just so out of place and appeared out of nowhere. As far as I could tell, the message of this scene was "If you're a girl, you *will* be sexually assaulted at some point."

Court 101 for movie fans: The arguments that are going to be discussed are done in pretrial motions and both sides are aware of those and all evidence and witnesses before court ever starts Lawyers remain calm and usually calmly asks questions seated. They are not to go past their tables and if they do so without permission they will be tackled by the bailiff. Getting close to the witness never happens and would seem aggressive. Witnesses do not confess due to being asked tough questions

Someone’s gotta explain to Netflix that it is ok to end a series after one season if the story is told. You don’t need to continue it until it dies a slow death (and then add another season for good measure). Bringing shows to their natural conclusion might even make room for shows that need more than one season to tell its story to not be cancelled on a cliffhanger.
@birdword1116 жыл бұрын
Worst line of the show: Alex (looking at photo of himself in a coma): Why did I do this to myself? Tyler: You didn't do it to you....THE SCHOOL DID IT TO YOU. NO. Stop. While those kids need to learn that their actions have consequences and I would never point at Alex and scream "It's your fault so I shouldn't feel bad for you!" (in fact, why does it have to be a matter of fault? Why can't it just be a thing that happened because he was in a bad place?), the school itself did not do it to him. They have a lot to atone for, definitely, but that's not the same. We can say their actions may have contributed to this bad place he was in, but that's the extent of that. Mental illness is a complex thing with a "perfect storm" of factors that cause it at once, not just one thing.

Self pity oozes through all the characters on the show.

This reminds me of something I've seen in real life that bothers me. Finger pointing after someone kills themselves can lead those accused (usually people in a position of power who could have theoretically stepped in and prevented the suicide) to become severely depressed and even kill themselves as well from the guilt. If you cared so much about mental health, you wouldn't place such a weight on someone's shoulders for the rest of their life, especially as those people almost always feel incredibly guilty already.

I’m late but this is kind of a bad take. I feel like Bojack kind of romanticizes mental illness a bit. If you want a good form of media that portrays mental illness well check out the musical Next to Normal
@michaelandrews1174 жыл бұрын
@@benjammin007 I don't think Stupid Piece of Shit, The View from Halfway Down, Bad Damage or Downer Ending give any romanticism to mental illness. In fact BoJack repeatedly goes out of its way to show how shit mental illness and addiction and trauma is and shows the consequences of people's actions when they self destruct. Then they explicitly show Diane going through depression, ditching her meds because she thinks it'll be better for her "process" then show that that's a bad decision and that her meds were helping and preventing her from feeling as shit as she had for 5 seasons beforehand.

13 reasons why happened to come during a time when i was a bit fucked up and the graphic/unrealistic depictions of suicide and its impact really stayed in my mind for a long time. It felt like it was encouraging me to do it with how it depicted suicide as a good revenge method which is an incredibly unhealthy thought. I think it could've been a fine show if they would've changed suicide from a revenge to a massive burden on everyone else.

gaby most parts aren’t realistic. The dialogue is insufferable, the suicide aspect is horribly romanticized. No teenagers talk like this. Bullying is rarely, if ever this bad (at least what I’ve seen). Yes, the acting is good, the production is good, but that’s about it.

This show has such a strong message of "don't worry, look at Hannah! After she killed herself she got her revenge, she got her justice, people feel sorry now, and she's not really gone! She's with Clay!" And it is so so so so so dangerous to push that message. Not only is it completely false but it is the fantasy that people struggling with suicide have and here's this depiction showing them that it's what they'll get.

luvtheheaven5 Personally I adore "Ladybird" because I find it relatable, but I can understand why someone could dislike it because it heavily relies on tropes. That being said I feel alot of teens try to ascribe to cliches as they find themselves. So while nothing special happens I feel the honesty of the portrayal is what makes "Ladybird" special. I feel it's the female renaissance of "Boyhood".

So for a show that I'm doing with a production company, I actually did use the "I'm Pregnant" cliffhanger, but I like to think that I did it alright. The use of it was in the perspective of a side character who gets an episode dedicated to them in a 5 episode story arc following different characters at Christmas time, and it shows that his inability to let the past drag him down led him to making poor decisions. Now, as the writer, I can go about this one of two ways should I do a season two, and not have this side character be the father, but I'm still deciding that. Either way, I don't have it impact the main story, nor do I have it be important or try to make it REALISTIC and GROUNDED and GRITTY -- it's basically my take on a high school dramedy along the same vein as Louie and Atlanta and Freaks and Geeks. The way this show did it, I swear to God -- I almost laughed my ass off with how over the top it was. "I'm pregnant with Bryce's baby..." *CLOSE-UP OF JESSICA OHMIGOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDDDDD DAS NUTZ!!!!* The way the writers tackle everything is just insane and ridiculous. And the hot button topics are just so on the nose it's insulting. I remember being confused beyond belief when they had the montage of women speaking out about sexual assault (gee, I wonder where they got this idea from, despite the fact that this is pretty much the main crutch of the whole series and Hannah's death and most of the story arcs of half of the characters?), and the school shooting attempt was quite possible one of the most insulting things I've ever seen in my life, it literally made my sick to my stomach. I've got nothing wrong with mass shootings in a show or a movie as long as you understand the implications and handle it as tastefully as you can. Elephant by Gus Van Sant is probably the only good example of this, because it handles it in a grounded way that never once feels over the top. You know what's worse than romanticizing suicide? Romanticizing a school shooter. Say what you will about the first season, but at least the suicide scene was handled as well as it could've, and made a great visual case for why not to do it in the end, thanks to the haunting editing, the down right gruesome sound mixing, and the performances from Katherine Langford, Kate Walsh, and Shrek from Broadway. The rape scene with the mop was just gratuitous for the sake of being gratuitous. Christ, I can't believe this is getting a third season. I'm calling it now, they're gonna use VHS tapes or BETA tapes for Tyler's manifesto or some shit. Either that, or those two things are gonna be a part of it.

One thing, Yes schizophrenia is a very serious condition and if you feel you have it, speak to a psych/counselor, but you don’t have to be institutionalized for it. Some people do and are institutionalized. Others don’t, they can get by with therapy, or medication. You’d be surprised how many people with schizophrenia like going out, and them being out in the world making friends and being productive is much more helpful then them being in a mental institution. -From someone with family members with schizophrenia.

thank you for this. I have an extremely difficult time trusting any show that attempts to portray mental illness because despite their best efforts, nothing will ever be able to imitate what a real disorder feels like and it hurts me to know people exploit these narratives to make cute instagram edits and fanfiction. I have no respect for any creator who waters down real life, severe issues because they know it is a profitable market.
