Otaku-Neko 25 "why would you go out of your to make 13 tapes for people she interactived with? Because she wanted revenge " If she wanted revenge she would've taken the counselor's offer to pursue legal actions on the guy who raped her. If she wanted revenge she would've asked the guy to release the tapes to the public so that the people who bullied her could be charged or at least hated but why didn't she? If she really wanted revenge why wouldn't she take these chances to get it? Why leave the only evidence of her harassment to the people who harassed her? It seems way more likely that she wanted to tell her story of why she committed suicide than to get revenge. "when the principal ask her whats up she says nothing so the principal has to let her go because he can't make her stay against her will and what does she do she turns around and says hes not coming i'm like bitch really?" She most likely had a mental disorder which could explain her behavior so pointing her out as the odd one shows that you probably don't know enough to analyze characters. "why would she not try to get help we were shown she outgoing witty sarcastic but they change her personality so she can not tell anyone and play the victim i would understand if she was a shy girl quite loner ect but its clear shes isn't" You should honestly look up more on bullying and mental health since you clearly seem to not know much on the subject. People do act differently depending on their environment. I can be enthusiastic and energetic in public but than be sad when i'm not in the public's eye.

Jennelle M. Because they're all suicidal themselves and feel that because it deals with suicide it automatically makes them apart of it. I myself have been suicidal and depressed, (actually diagnosed by a therapist, I hare people who self diagnose) and when I watched 13 reasons why it made me feel really sad. The episode where Hannah dies, I literally had to close my eyes because it would trRIGgErRR my anxiety. The show sucked. People who want to die take it seriously cause they want to die too.

I've only seen the first episode but I do like the fact that they're bringing up the topic of suicide to the media. But I heard that they're making a second season which WILL make a teen drama out of a serious topic which, stinks (to put it lightly)
@droppkick1538
@droppkick1538 6 жыл бұрын
av4d they also fuck up and make it so that she doesn't get help. Making her and the audience think she has to go through everything alone. Which is a lie- she had opportunities to get help. Just like most people do in this world. There's also the fact they try to push the fact that if her unrequited love interest had liked her back everything would be fine and she wouldn't be depressed. That's not how depression works, and being in a relationship can often times cause it to get worse. All in all the show majorly messed up on multiple fronts.
@OriginalCindy8
@OriginalCindy8 6 жыл бұрын
The show screwed up the portrayal of suicide completely. They didn’t emphasize that it was caused by mental illness, they didn’t emphasize that it was treatable, they didn’t tell viewers that the person responsible for Hannah’s death was in fact Hannah herself, etc.

Clay in the book was way more aware that it WAS Hannah’s decision. She was doing it to get revenge. The book was more focused on that than how the show made it so Hannah was a hero, her suicide was supposed to change everything. It made suicide glorified. And that is the worst thing they could of done with the plot.

Sydney Bishop they changed it to keep a serious tone a hurt girl who fell into depression commits suicide (in the 10 anniversary of the book she is said to be alibe because she swallowed pills and her parents rushed her to the hospital) but in the show they wanted to show people that there isn't always a second chance and one person actions bring consequences that can start a chain reaction with others as the show clearly displays.
@Chelsaroo22
@Chelsaroo22 6 жыл бұрын
Sydney Bishop and on top of that, I heard that the way she kills herself in the book is not how she kills herself in the show. I wish the show was more nuanced in its narrative and that her death wasn’t sensationalized.

I don't care who I offend but this is the most honest review I've seen about this show. this show to some extent did in fact romanticize sucide and the target audience was way too hormonal and immature to handle the topics of this show, there are way to many fan girls trying to defend Justin because bohoo he had a sad home life . 1) some of the people on the tape did not deserve to be on the tape, Hanna even wrote down jeffs name but crossed it out, how the fuck could she even think of putting his name AT ALL ?? I can see what tony meant when he said " Hanna was a lot of drama" 2) Hanna was in fact looking for revenge, stop downplaying that what she truly wanted wasn't revenge, if she left the tapes to " just tell her story she would of left something for her parents, but she didn't she wanted to end her life and wanted everyone to feel her pain. 3) some of her reasons were actually petty as fuck . How is she going to seriously put Zach on the same list as a fucking rapist?! She was actually the one to be mean to zach, she said " you couldn't just let it go" um so only you Hanna is allowed to hold grudges? Zach did not deserve at all to be blamed for the rest of his life for something so juevenile. 4) she literally kept clay as a second choice don't see how anyone thinks they were so cute when she liked Justin, then Marcus, kinda zach and then decided that she actually wanted clay. Then still expected him to make the first move . 5) it romanticized suicide a bit "I cost a girl her life because I was afraid to love her " so many teenagers thought that was so " sad and iconic " to say when in reality how disturbing that line was . There was no way clay could of possibly stopped or changed her course you can not will someone to live . I found that line from clay to be so pretentious and teenage cliche trash you can't love someone to live. Hannah. Had. A . Mental. Illness. Love . Doesn't. Fix . That. 6) The writers heavily missed their own point about " realism " by making the most unrealistic and ridiculous situations starting from something little as tatooed teens to something big as the cliches characters and making the parents spineless like every single drama show ever made. 7) Hanna expected the world to read her damn mind ( first serious sign of her mental illness. 8) hannas severe mental illness was overlooked by all the "13 reasons why" Hanna was highly needy., delusional, and was mad when people didn't know what she wanted . There were many instances that hinted she had borderline personality disorder along with depression but of course it wasn't assessed. 9) besides the rape , her real issue was mental illness, all the things that happened to Hanna happened to some of the people she blamed for her death , I,.e, Alex and Jessica, she killed herself , because her mental illness amplified everything happening to her , 10) hannas father even mentions how she was being bullied at her old school, she had already deep underlying issues surfacing. 11) Jessica was an bitch for slapping her , but Jessica can literally tell Hanna from beyond the grave to fuck off how is Hanna going to guilt Sherri for a fucking stop sign at make her feel guilty for the rest of her life but Hanna didn't do or say anything to help Jessica from being raped 12 Justin deserved Jessica slapping him, I can't not even believe there are fans calling Jessica a bitch, again, mostly teenage girls who fancy Justins character, he allowed Bryce to rape Jessica apparently because he has a sob story and a cute face he also witnessed his girlfriend go through obvious ptsd and dwindle slowly into alcoholism and he still said nothing, him having a sad home life doesn't excuse him , maybe if Bryce had a sad home life hewould be defended. I don't see anyone sympathizing with Tyler oh wait the actor isn't as good looking as Justin so no one cares . 13) the show is actually glorified cliche trash that failed to truly talk about Hannah's mental illness, the target audience is way to immature to handle the seriousness of the topics discussed, anyone is free to be complain about these reasons but this about somes up My critiques of the show. Oh I'm gonna add reason number 14 14) To any teenagers who are looking for a show to protray mental illness and teenage issues I highly recommend my mad fat diary go watch that show then this glorified trash .

Izaya Orihara exactly just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good look at shows like pretty little liars and gossip girl. I did enjoy this show as much I enjoy any other teenage cliche drama but since this show marketed itself in the big boy league and over amplify the fact that they're so " different and controversial " then I will judge it harsher . The way they're marketing Dylan minette and Katherine Langford (Hanna and clay) on posters and magazines is so transparent and proves to me how much they're milking the " shipper" fan base . The fans honestly are such moronic hypocrites they're literally harassing Dylan's real life girlfriend it's like they learned nothing from the show

Yuki C: The book didn't have as much depth imo. But it is definitely. The ending didn't do any justice for the book though. Clay just talks to the counselor, gives him the tapes, walks out of the offices and tries to respark an old friendship with Skye. The end? Not to mention the book mostly covered incidents of the past and not the present. The TV series on the other hand covered both the past and the present really well. Yeah, the ending was just as the same, with the addition of Tony and his boyfriend joining in. Hey, at least there's gonna be a 2nd season.

Ebony Russell agreed! Decent show, but not as great as people make it out to be. The greatest parts of 13 Reasons Why were a couple of songs from Joy Division and The Cure. After AHS: Hotel, Stranger Things and now 13 Reasons Why, it's about time TV shows are introducing new and younger audiences with these 80's bands.

One of the things that bothers me most about the show is the way that she is treated as a martyr and how the other people in her life were apparently so horrible and responsible for her problems. This girl didn't do ANYTHING to help herself, she constantly puts herself in a spot to be a victim. And I'm not saying it's her fault that she got raped, or her friend was raped, or that people were assholes to her. But she continued to be friends with crappy people. She continued to hide her feelings and lie. She never spoke to her parents or teachers or anyone about what was happening (until the end, which was BS anyway). She never really TRIED. And then her blaming everyone in her life... It makes me so mad. I've recently lost someone very close to me to suicide, and nobody tells you how much guilt suicide survivors feel. It's a really heavy burden to bear and it's also not something we ought to feel. Ultimately it isn't anyone's fault for someone else committing suicide. Even if people were jerks, it was still her decision. And the guilt she put on others, especially people who really loved her, was messed up. They didn't deserve that.

I think that is a common way that young people, especially teenagers, feel. Your emotions and problems feel so big because you don't have the experience of a long lifetime to compare them to. I don't have any idea what's going on in your life or anything, but don't be afraid to be open and honest. Shitty people WILL come and hurt you, disappoint you. But there are good people too. You have to be persistent and, especially, decide not to give up no matter what. Life is a series of seasons.

3:20 I despise this show because it makes a bunch of edgy teenagers think they know what suicide is. It's not like this. I lost my Emelia, and to this day I'll never know why. People don't just kill themselves because of being bullied. If they do, other issues were present. Suicide and depression are deep psychological conflicts that can rarely, if ever, be explained. I miss her so much, and I'll never know if there was anything I could have done.

There's this show called Death Parade, and the main concept doesn't center around suicide, and may not give a perfect representation, but the two times that the show involved a suicide, both characters regretted their decision to take their own lives after being able to review the events of their lives and how their death affected the people that were closest to them, namely parents grieving over their deaths. I thought it handled it better than 13 Reasons Why, which I originally had interest in.

Honestly, I really hated that show. Hannah just seemed to blame others for something she decided to do. And she had a lot of choices. SPOILER 🚨 Her best friend gets raped in her own party, and you've witnessed the whole thing. Option 1: Tell the police her best friend was raped...? Option 2: Stop while Bryce was attempting to rape her best friend...? Option 3: Make a tape about how she let her best friend get raped, and then make that best friend feel even more like shit with those stupid tapes. So many options, but she chose the ones that lead to her successful suicide. Here's another one! She gets raped in the hot tub from Bryce. Option 1: Go to your parents immediately and call the police..? OR Option 2: Make a stupid TAPE OUT OF IT
@boxofawkwardness
@boxofawkwardness 7 жыл бұрын
It's not that easy. You saw how Bryce acted when Justin came in? And even so she isn't the hero of this story, and second of all, even if she went to the police she had no god damn proof to back it up. When she was raped in the hot tub, 1 she did make a tape about it... and two consulting parents and such isn't easy either, and by this point it wouldn't have changed anything cause she was already raped by Bryce

The police have rape kits to test Jessica and if Bryce wasnt wearing a condom that'd be proof. It's definitely not easy to tell people, god forbid your own parents about that kind of trauma, but she could have acted in a way to bring a rapist to justice and help her friend without killing herself and blaming everyone she interacted with.

I know the majority of this video is you critiquing the quality of the show from a production standpoint, which is why your video unfortunately has a lot of dislikes, but I hope people realize the the show as a whole (as you said in #7) is what the real problem people have with it is. Those who have experienced suicidal thoughts or depression are going to be negatively affected by this show. It makes people aware of suicide, which is great, but it does it in a ruthless, insensitive way that offers no *solution* , no message that there *is* a reason to live, that those with depression *have* people that do care about them, rather than those terrible people at her school that the show only focused on. This is a great show for people without depression to watch, to make them more sensitive and aware that their actions cause consequences, but I wish the producers empathized more with people with suicidal thoughts and the fast that they offered no solution to cope.

Well I think it was good that the show enfasized that a person can feel pretty bad for the things other people do to them and as the majority of people are assholes most of the time, I see why they targeted the other side of the audience, the ones that not always bad people do harsh stuff to others, it makes people think about how their decisions can affect others and yes I've been at the other side, at the victim's side, I know how it feels, and I wouldnt recommend it to people with depression, I really wouldnt, the show in a way cam make them think that suicide can bring them the attention their parents fail to give, the love the people around them fail to give, because people that commit suicide some of the times the only think they want is that someone acknowledges them that they exist, they want to feel again, feel like they matter. So no, this show is more directed to everyone but the really unstable and hurt people that are going through it, Once you go through something as though as having suicidal thoughts, once you start moving forward, once you accept who you are, then you can understand better other people.

+Christopher Cruz "It offers no solution because that's reality for most people"....So, there isn't a solution to suicide for most people? Huh....they'd be better off just killing themselves then? What do you mean there's no solution? There's nothing a suicidal person can do? I have way too many questions about this train of thought... Yes, depict reality. But in reality, there are always choices and alternatives. If the show could show the "right way" to handle the suicidal thoughts then that'd be far more effective. It's fine to make a show about someone failing to appropriately handle suicidal thoughts. The main message is: "Be careful how you treat other or they might kill themselves" instead of: "Here's what not to do when you're suicidal". So, for anyone contemplating suicide, this show doesn't really help but instead says that suicide is mainly the fault of everyone else.

stxrfish This comment was pointless. if you know the real meaning of the show and what society wants- just let me explain.. People with depression do have a point or moment when they want to commit suicide. It is a *VERY* sensitive and controversial topic, But this show makes people more aware and conscious about what people with anxiety and depression a are going through without directly giving a full on lecture.. It involves rape, drama, broken friendships and trust issues too. You gotta give them credit although they did. it include what everyone feels like. I would liken to add that it is very rude and i am personally offended how you assumes people with depression, anxiety, OCD (i know it doesn't seem like a big deal but it does stress you Alot) and other mental illnesses can't enjoy 13 Reasons Why. If you watch the show and did not get help before watching some people actually talk to their parent and guardians for therapy or professional help.

The wrong approach? All the show is saying is to just talk to the silent girl in class who has slices in her wrist, or to talk to the guy who always sits alone to eat. Tamsin Jane The message was not that anyone deserves special treatment or that you are a bad person if you don't talk to someone, honestly do you have any thinking skills at all? Being raped, bullied, harassed, can lead to depression and in worse cases suicide. Yes the person who killed themselves ultimately decided to that but if it wasn't for people who had mindset like yours to think talking about others and being rude to others is ok and that it doesn't effect a person you are responsible for bein a FACTOR in someone taking their life.

I don't watch 13RW because of the unrealistic and one-dimensional teenagers. Like in the beginning, when those two girls are taking a selfie in front of Hannah's locker, I'm pretty sure teenagers are not that damn sick. Anyway, the characters are so unrealistic & unlikeable, poorly written. And characters don't have to be likeable, but they have to at least be understandable. Hell, the teens of the anime film Koe no Katachi (highly recommend) are way better written. They're actions are understandable, they have likeable traits, & can be terrible people, just read/watch Koe no Katachi bcuz its hard to explain.

I was lonely and suicidal in HS and honestly...the message of pretend kindness kills me the most. I remember this one girl came to sit next to me at lunch because I was sitting alone, and I hated it. The whole time I felt awkward cuz the kindness felt so forced, I could just feel her pitying me and I felt pathetic. Clay deciding to hang out with Skye just because he feels guilty is wrong imo. I know I don't speak for everyone who's suicidal but this is just my own opinion from my own experience with mental illness.
@cyan7181
@cyan7181 7 жыл бұрын
I actually did sit next to another girl one time and that was because I genuinely wanted her to feel welcome and not at all alone. But then again people tell me I am a genuine person so I know it doesn't seem forced - since it isn't. I think you should try to see things from the other's point of view instead of judging someone thinking to know they pretend things. Clay decided to hang out with Skye for whatever reasons (to me it was more a "carpe diem" moment, he had wanted to hang out with her for some time, but now after understanding that things can change on their own he decided to try and form a new friendship), but I didn't see any guilt in his actions. He didn't even have anything to be guilty for, he literally was not in the list because he wasn't one of the reasons of Hannah's death.

Well, while I understand your point of view, there's really no way to tell. I've been on the other side, where I'm trying to help someone out but they just won't accept me. I'm either too kind, too fake, or doing it to pass time. When, in reality, when a person feels THAT lost, you can only do so much. There's nothing you can say or do to convince them you do have good intentions... There's only so much you can do. And the worst part is, as time goes on, you wonder what else could have happened for that person to trust you more. And maybe there wasn't anything, because unfortunately people break and you can try to help repairing the damage, but it'll be up to them whether they want to give happiness a second chance or not. "You can only help someone who accepts your help", isn't that correct?
@DanielaxMarie
@DanielaxMarie 7 жыл бұрын

It immediatly hurt my heart when he said something like ''to entertain you for 13 hours'', it totally sounds like a waste of a part of my life, wich I could have used for something more important like working on my future. 13 hours I shouldnt have wasted on a serie like this, that´s what this video is telling me. Yes, yes, yes. I couldn't agree more with you. These idea of using suicide as revenge, as stated by Hannah and her narrative in the tapes, is very disturbing. It was a suicide. Not a revenge suicide. She did not kill herself to get back at people. She did it because she truly believed that the world would be better without her in it. It's not that she doesn't care about her parents, or she doesn't love them but she believed her parents would be better off without her. It was stated in the last episode. If she wanted revenge, the tapes would have been sent straight to the police or her parents. She wants people to see that even if you are a protagonist in your life story, you may appear as an antagonist in other people's story.
@nyx0838
@nyx0838 7 жыл бұрын
So why did she send those tapes to those people? Didn't she do it so they can live their lives with the guilt of having something to do with her death? Why would you assume your parents will be better off without you? I'm pretty sure they wouldn't raise you for all those years just for you to think that way. The series was trying to tell people to be nice, the message was not properly delivered, but I get that it happens in real life it's just that they could've proved that there are other options besides suicide.

Hannah shouldn't have died; it made things more complicated, and unnecessary. The show should have based her suicide attempt on the book so she could survive and recover as Clay listens to her tapes. Absolutely right, everything deserves some criticism, but a lot of this guy's arguments, seemed to have completely missed the mark. For example, he seems to think a show can only focus on one thing at a time, such as the message/s or the characters, which isn't really the case. Personally, from what the directors and cast said in the beyond episode, it was intended to be a social commentary on the stigmatisation of suicide and how it was dealt with, including blame. The creator of this video, however seemed to think that they should have tried to only focus on the message. But personally, I think you can have really fleshed out characters, that at base levels, create archetypes. Not only does this make the show seem fuller, it actually allows it to focus on more than one theme. I don't understand why people seem to think shows and films should only really have 1 message. I know plenty of works of art and literature that have vast messages, and some that have none, and it is left open ended. I mean the show did fail, don't get me wrong, I'm not blind to it's fallacies. The melodrama, whilst very similar to most current day high-schoolers, is too classical for the undertone of the show. However, the fact that the tapes are just one girl's perspective may give reasoning to that, as everyone asserts their opinion over fact when it comes to retelling events that may have happened to them, such as Zach dropping the letter. I know it wasn't perfect, but it certainly wasn't the garbage this guy made it out to be.

But 100% of depressed suicidal people will watch the show and become more of a "victim". Even Hannah became equally a douchebag before her death and more so ever after it. How is she different. @superquietbunny
@superquietbunny 7 жыл бұрын
Isabella Johnston Adora L. It kinda glorified suicide because it showed Hanna as sort of heroic for leaving those tapes to those who hurt her. She was "teaching them a lesson" and became almost heroic to the readers because of that. which sort of left the message that suicidal people can go on with their ideation because they can do what Hanna did - leave a note that will affect people and learn from her suicide. If you really wanted people to not commit suicide, this is not how you go about it. ATZ was right that showing how graphic her death was wasn't going to stop people from killing themselves. The real message of the book was be nice to people, every little action can affect someone and these small hurts could build up and lead to suicide. It was a good message. But you taught that lesson by killing yourself? You just set up an example for other hurt and suicidal people. Great.
@postingful
@postingful 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's what I was thinking after the show. I liked it but I didn't think it's a "suicide preventer", altough I didn't think it glorifies it either. I just think that even from the title if you have some people that wronged you you can get revenge on them by leaving these "reasons" behind and killing yourself. They didn't handle that situation perfectly.

But it’s so much more than that. When you’re suicidal everything is your fault. And if I ended it, I *knew* it’d destroy the people around me. I was wronged by some people and on a very deep sick level I wanted them to hurt. But I learned to not think like that, and how to cope with everything. This show grossly depicts a very hard thing to live through. I was still very suicidal when the show came out and I watched it. It was SO TRIGGERING. I began to imagine others missing me, my funeral, my locker and all that. I never finished the show and I tried to while recovering and I found it repulsive. How DARE they romanticize they worst part of my life and those visuals I thought up in my head when I was in unimaginable pain. This is worse than Riverdale.

I have tried to commit suicide three times, twice eating pills and last time cutting my wrists, because of bullying and the sexual molestation by my brothers godfather, but when the thirth time failed I looked at the mirror and at that moment I chose to live and get help and get stronger to survive and after 14 years of therapy I m now a survivor and happily married and I m a mother to a wonderful boy. Staying alive was the best decision I have ever made. I M a proud survivor and so are you. I hate this show because it gives the young teens false hope and it glorifies the notion that if life gets in the drain only answer is suicide and I think that this show does lot more damage than good.

The Poppers You shouldn't need a show to tell you that YOUR ACTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES AND EFFECTS ON OTHERS. Have people become so un-empathic that we need to be taught about how things you do affect others? That's, like, something you learn in preschool or kindergarten, not when you're on the cusp of adulthood or adolescence.

It would be great if we all learned it in preschool, and more importantly, woulnd't forget it after that, but yes, many people have forgotten by the time they are an adult. I'd say most adults have forgotten, often more so then adolosents.

Unfortunately the creators ignored all the recommendations and warnings from psychologists and chose to "romanticize" the idea of suicide.

I will tell you something. I suffered from depression and anxiety. I hurt myself.I did. Because it distracted me from the emotional and mental pain people were causing me . And it seemed right. Now that right there is a fucked up brain , and you can't blame that person right there. Because they are mentally ill . Now that I've somewhat recovered. I've started to realised, my reasons were stupid and my brain was fucked up. It's a big world.You have more to live for. My point is, I do understand what Hannah went through maybe not entirely but I do, but blaming others for what she did was not justified on her part and nor was it fair for others. She could have used a little help.

3:23 “Just because something deals with deep subjects” Means there should be more critique as getting it too wrong can actually harm a person. Make people think suicidal people want attention and want revenge. And etc. there should be more criticism so creators can get it as accurate as possible so it doesn’t end up harming a person’s mindset and views on a subject.

I think its good to let people watch it know that its weird that clay takes so long but its mostly about al the messages I mean rape is a big problem look how the principle dealt with it in the show thats actually how it goes most times in real life its frustrating for the victims to hear its their fault. The death is showed so people can realise how intens it is that there should be something done to stop it. Its also about how girls get sexualised so much in high school that people think its okay to do such things. I mean come on there are so much series about fricking superman flying trough the sky and everybody loves it but when some real life shit gets shown people think its overreacting or to graphic.

Showing how sad your death would be to others seems like a decent deterrent of suicidal behavior (since it makes it seem like your life matters which most suicidal people don't think is the case) also not knowing it was based on a book doesn't make you a trend follower.

DAnielT123 well personally I think it could help people with depression or people who feel suicidal.. I think that because it may give people a sense of how people around them might react to one killing their selves and that they would be missed. I am not suicidal so I wouldn’t know, though. It also might have the opposite effect, because if I wanted to kill myself I think that the show would give me ideas on how I would do that, or the just sadness of the show it’s self which is designed to make people feel sad I think.. I don’t know, I hope I’m making some sense

There's definitely better ways to help a rape survivor than just saying "report them or move on". Not just talking about the show, please never say something like this irl to a sexual assault victim.

I've dealt with mental illness and suicide through out my whole life (whether through myself or other people in my life) and the creators of this show presenting it as if her suicide was everyone else's fault was SO IRRESPONSIBLE. Hannah had a problem, she suffered trauma and in turn suffered depression and anxiety, she needed to seek real, professional help and she never did - she might've felt it was everyones fault but that is not the case in reality (and they never showed that aspect - they never even really mentioned mental illness). If they wanted to have a show take on a heavy topic such as this they should have chosen a different text. I think this show will do more harm than good - it'll make young people think they have nowhere to turn when they absolutely do - even if they cant go straight into one on one, in person therapy (due to expenses or fear) there are countless distress or crisis lines or sites where you can talk to counsellors over the phone or online chat for free.
