We found out the hard way in 2016 when when we said yes to people begging us to go to a time share promotion, 3 hours + and they barely let us go in time enough to get back to hotel (NYNY) and get ready for the free show(at the V Theater inside the Hollywood) and we had to beg them to let us go then. The next Vegas trips it was so easy to turn people down for stuff after that..

On our first trip to Las Vegas we were trapped in a time share for 7 HOURS !!! RUDE RUDE people and hard sell techniques that were so aggressive I had to threaten to call the police to get them to stop! Do NOT be roped in! The tickets are NOT WORTH IT! Add to that, we were dropped in the middle of nowhere and had to wait with 30 other people for a " free shuttle" ....we were exhausted and soooo angry!!

Same thing happened to me, hubby and two friends. It was our first trip and we got roped in. It was a horrible experience. I was honest from the beginning that we were not buying a timeshare and that us being there was a mistake. After a few hours I had to be rude and forceful to get us the hell out of there. It will never happen again. I always warn people now.

Great video Chris. One additional waste of time when it comes to Vegas is attempting to get tickets for a popular show a few hours before it starts and/or a few weeks before in the case of major events Vegas hosts like F1, National Finals Rodeo & the various conference tournaments for college basketball that are held in Vegas to name a few. These events often sell out right when tickets become available so it is important to get those tickets right then & there. I found out the hard way about this back in 2018 when I wanted to go down to Vegas to see the Washington Huskies play in the Pac 12 tournament a week before the tournament began & I couldn't get any tickets because all of the tickets for the entire tournament had been sold back in January of that year.

I lived in Vegas for years. I still love visiting. Everything in this video is true and accurate. Here are a few others.... Be careful of the distances when walking. The Strip hotels are a lot farther from wherever you are than they seem. That's because they're HUGE! It takes a lot of walking to get anywhere. Avoid weekends, particularly holiday weekends. The difference between a 3-day weekend and the Tuesday - Thursday that preceded it is HUGE! Everything is easier--lines, taxis, finding a blackjack table you can afford, everything. This was mentioned in the video, but try to get reservations and/or tickets as far in advance as possible. You will avoid long lines and won't get shut out.

The one and only time I was really able to make the best use of the LV Monorail-We were staying at Signature at MGM, which is already in the back of the complex, and fairly close to the MGM Terminal…We decided to have dinner at Benihana, which is not too far from the station at the other end of the system, at the Westlake (although I will always think of it as the LV Hilton)-that particular Benihana used to be economical priced, now hellishly Overpriced (like most places) but it’s extraordinary Japanese village themed setting is gorgeous and was worth the effort and the bumpy ride, since we didn’t have to devote that much walking on either end

Another wonderful video. I would like to add an alternative to two of the "don'ts." With regard to not staying too far out, pick a hotel central to what you like to do. I always stay at The Mirage. Partly because of the movie Vegas Vacation but I really love the hotel. It's basically central strip. Secondly, with regards to a rental car. When we want to get a car for a day and drive somewhere, we just use the rental car service at Mirage. Cars are right there in their parking garage. I've found this to be easy. Only problem is that its best to reserve in advance as they sell out.

Regarding #3, it really isn't that bad getting a rental car in Vegas. I do it every time I go. Make sure you have Avis Preferred or one of the equivalent services that allow you to skip the counter at the rental car center. It will maybe take you 30 minutes total if you have to wait in line for a bus to the rental car center.
@MrDon967

i think its more about driving the rental at the strip then the actual pickup. for example finding routes, parking, traffic, god forbid you take a wrong turn now you gotta deal with traffic from a different lane while trying to get back on track those sort of things. walking thru the strip just quicker especially on weekend trips and afternoon nightrush hours

I agree. If you're just going to stay on the strip I could agree that it's not worth the hassle, but I love getting outside that bubble. So for me a visit to Vegas necessitates a car.

On the car thing.. You can sign up for one of the free rental car clubs (Thrifty Blue Chip) ,take the shuttle that I haven't waited more than 5 minutes for in 20 years.Then walk through the rental center directly to your car.,Now you are basically 10 minutes to strip hotels.Drive up to registration ,drop off travel partner with most of luggage to get in line for check in.Then go self park and meet travel partner at check in. Now if you don't need a car ,don't rent one.But it's simple if you do it right

For getting from the airport to the hotel I really feel it's worth it to book a private ride. It's bit more expensive than a taxi (but not by much), and no waiting in lines. The driver is waiting already when the flight lands, and better service. Also they even ask if want to stop at a liquor store, which I recommend to do. Off strip stores are much cheaper.

LV is the only city I've visited where I've had to wait for the shuttle to/from the offsite rental facility. And that was on a Wednesday morning! One additional tip: waiting for the shuttle back to the terminal, we were standing out in the heat/sun, so keep the sunscreen handy. I feel like the monorail is an absolute godsend for a conventioneer staying at the MGM Grand. But as the video points out... west side of the Strip? Meh. what's amusing is that at the MGM Grand stop, you can see the front entrance -- it's about 15 seconds away as the crow flies. But getting there through the hotel takes like ten minutes!

Biggest waste of time? Watching this video. No, no, no, JUST KIDDING! This is one of your best videos ever Chris - GREAT tips for not wasting your time in Vegas. The rental car segment was hilarious - and very accurate, I might add. And you are SOOO right about not taking the monorail for short trips! Awfully long walks to many of the casinos from the monorail. For longer trips, it works well, as I used it to go from the South end to the Westgate (an underrated casino) - and the monorail is inexpensive. A word to those that must use a rental car - there are a few rental car locations right at some casinos. The one I used was at Treasure Island. Saves some time compared to that awful rental car location away from the airport. But it can still get costly constantly parking your car at various locations during your stay - so avoid using a rental car as Yellow Productions so comically explained! Another fantastic video Chris!!

@@YellowProductions The rental car shuttle is actually in a great location for getting to most of the strip hotels. It allows you to either get car ,and drive LVB to a south strip hotel if you want to view a few sites ,and see the welcome sign.Or, if your hotel is center/north strip or downtown ,the rental center allows you a straight shot to the I15 ,to bypass all of the LVB traffic

Great tips! Getting a hotel very close to a monorail station like Westgate or Sahara is a big time saver. Many of the hotels that have monorail stations are a very long walk as you indicated about MGM. I find Uber and Lyft is a huge waste of time because even though you save money the pick up and drop off places are usually in terrible back locations far away from the from the casino. Taxis will take you right to the front entrance. Taking a cab from the airport is the way to go. I’ve never waited long, even if the lines are long and they have flat rates to various predetermined hotel taxi zones so the price is not bad. And I totally agree, staying at a hotel off the strip, like the Strat, or the Rio, while it will save your money, you will spend so much time walking or taking taxis to get to the action.

If you're only spending one night in Las Vegas, I would not spend it in a casino hotel on the strip or downtown. It's too much of a hassle to park and check in. I'd go for something like a Comfort Inn or La Quinta a few blocks from the strip. Also, Las Vegas really blew it with that monorail, just because it's so inconvenient to so many hotels.

Well said Chris. I’ve never ever rented a car in Vegas. Made no sense to. Also I did the time share thing once. Never again. Waste of time and high pressure sales. As a frequent visitor to Vegas, I must agree with all that you said. Last December (2022), right after Chrismas day, we drove from LA to Vegas that took us about 8 hours. We promised ourselves not to do it again... ever. It is much better and cheaper to buy airline tickets in advance for real cheap, like around $100 rt. from LAX. You can take Uber everywhere while in Vegas for cheap too, around $25 to the strip hotels from LAS airport. You don't have to worry about looking for parking and paying for it. You are the best guide to Vegas, by far!

Just a note here about doing multiple hotels on a visit. When I did it with all MGM/Wynn properties, I had zero problems. Late checkouts, early check ins were granted to me. Completely complimentary. Now, I tried doing this with Caesars properties and it was a nightmare! The early check in fee at Caesar properties will legit be more expensive then your room rate for the entire stay. Not going to lie, IT WAS HORRIBLE. Bought groceries prior thinking I was going be let into my room (like MGM does). Never making that mistake again.

I have had great experience with the shuttles for Strip hotels, because they drop people off in optimized fashion, so it's not THAT different in time than a taxi. In other words they go first to the hotel nearest the airport - which you might pass anyway; then the next nearest - which you might pass anyway, etc. And my price difference has been closer to $20 each way, maybe since traveling alone (unlike with a wife, and bambino). This all assumes you stay on the strip. I stopped doing so entirely because they abandoned honesty in favor of the "Resort Fee" :(
@Bill_Woo

I don't mean to trash the video. All great solid, smart, reliable advice. I just think I'd stick to the shuttles though, until the time really mounts. There used to be a little shuttle bus that only ran from the Bellagio driveway. Inexpensive, no lines, tons of seats, so no bothering with reservations. It was on a schedule (maybe hourly?) rather than walk-up-and-use. It was discontinued but I'd check if it resumed.

Use Lyft or Uber, but they pick up in the parking garage at McCarron . At times it’s a huge cluster because it’s not very organized,and there’s a lot of people looking for their rides. I’m sure it’s the overpriced taxis that made them go this location. If you do take a taxi, don’t let them take you around on the tunnel route. It will add a lot to your fare, and they do it thinking most people won’t notice. Tropicana to Paradise is the quickest way to the strip. Tropicana to I-15 is the quickest way to downtown.

Fitting that the Welcome to Las Vegas sign is in the thumbnail because me and my friends walked to the sign from the Cromwell and back because they didn't want to pay for a cab and it ended up taking up half a day that could have been spent doing literally anything else. Tremendous waste of time! Lesson learned there. 😂😂😂

I watched this video before going to Vegas. I rewatched after getting back to see what I got right. I have to say, I disagree on the Monorail. Used appropriately it’s a big time and money saver. We stayed at the MGM Grand and had reservations at the Westgate, Sahara and the Conference Center so the Monorail was very convenient. I’d also argue that isn’t is not a fifteen minute walk from the MGM lobby to the monorail. I’m not sure how quickly most people walk but, for me, it was less than five minutes!

I think for you. Staying at the MGM Grand the Monorail makes a ton of sense! It doesn't make any sense for people Staying some place like the Bellagio

Yes, I totally agree. I miss the 99¢ steak and egg breakfasts that used to be common downtown. I'm that many years old. LOL My tip for residents near LA: The hot desert is hard on your car. I rent an inexpensive car at home, so I don't feel the need to drive as conservatively across the Mojave, (as I might in my own older car).

I disagree with 2 of your picks. Do take the monorail because it’s cheaper than a cab and more comfortable than walking short distances. And so switch hotels. If you have weeks stay you get to try more than one hotel and stay in different areas of the strip or Vegas. I certainly agree with all of the airport transportation tips.

We had reservations at Carversteak House for a busy Saturday night in Vegas. We were excited to go! Except when we got there, the hostess informed us that children under 12 (or some age like that) are not allowed in the dining hall. Did we book through Yelp? Gee, if you know that Yelp booking doesn't warn people about the under 12 rule maybe fix that, rather than having people show up on the night of their dinners and be disappointed? Hostess didn't even apologizes, just stated it as fact. Nice customer service.

I like the west side tram especially if you’re staying at what used to be called the Monte Carlo but yeah if you’re right next to the hotel you want to go to it’s not worth walking all the way to the tram. also, the Westside Tram is free the east side tram is not.

So, for the timeshare one, my mom got suckered into going to one last year on the first day of my birthday weekend (I didn't go with her, I stayed in the hotel). We arrived early after the drive to Vegas from California and she was sweettalked in attending the timeshare presentation on the promise of free stuff. I got anxious in the waiting because I thought she would be done for an hour and I legitimately thought something happened to her, but she finally got out 5 HOURS after the meeting was over and we had to meet up at the Bellagio for a thing to do. She ended up getting five Caesars Rewards gift cards that ranged around $200 (she kept the four $25 gift cards and gave me the sole $100 gift card) as well as an expired offer on the rewards program just so she would sign up for the timeshare. When we returned home, she canceled the timeshare program as quickly as possible because neither one of us would ever really use it.

The walk from the strip to the monorail terminal in the back of the Horseshoe and the walk from Harrah's terminal to the strip is the same distance as walking from the Horseshoe to Harrah's. Measured the distance on Google Maps. If I do take the monorail it is usually from MGM to Harrah's or Sahara, and the reverse of that.

While I agree about short trips on the monorail, we loved it for longer trips. We stayed at a hotel near the Westgate. When we wanted to head to the southern Strip we could jump on at Westgate and cruise down to MGM conveniently and relatively cheap!

Renting a car at the Vegas airport is not that complicated. Yes. There may be a short wait to take a shuttle from the airport but it’s not that bad. It’s a quick process to your rental car if you use the “skip the line” option.

When I lived in Orange County (California) I left for Vegas at 2pm Friday afternoon, thinking I would beat the traffic. It took me 3 hours to get 90 miles to Victorville. From Victorville to Vegas (190 miles) took another 3 hours. That was the last time I drove. JetBlue has 1 hour flights from the Long Beach airport to Vegas that are 1 hour. I never drove that road again.

The rental car thing isn’t bad if you have an account (with say National)so you can go straight to your car. But yes if you don’t need one, getting around with ride share is as cheap if not cheaper. Shuttles take forever but cheap. Avoid taxis$$$$$$$

regarding car rental- we are travelling in August 2023 from UK - we dont want a car for all 6 nights - we just want it for 2 maybe 3 days so we can explore stuff like gold mines, lake las vegas etc at our own pace - would you recommend just renting the car from our hotel desk (Golden Nugget) for convenience, or will be be overcharged massively for this and we would be better renting it directly from the rental facility somewhere fairly nearby? I dont mind paying a little more for the convenience of renting it from the hotel but not if it is going to double the price etc!?
