#suggestion Blackburne (the Black Death) vs. Lasker, London 1899, rd. 16. Blackburne plays the Ben Finegold approved explosive “c4” and the game gets just insanely wild. From pins on diagonals to the center blowing up to kings having to run away, the Black Death doesn’t fail to deliver. He also was the ONLY player in the entire tournament to inflict a loss on the World Champ.

I still think Garry is the strongest chess player of all time. He had the attacking style of Tal but with less spark because Garry gave his moves more consideration and pragmatism. Garry emulated Bobby’s unparalleled analysis: both would see what seems to be an okay-move as a bad move by showing a lot of lines and providing alternatives. Then, in hindsight, you would agree with Garry. Anand had this talent too. The most likely reason why his endgame technique is not exceptional (for a Super GM) is because he already looks for the kill at the opening.
@amosdraak35362 жыл бұрын
Also it’s kind of just mental limits, too. Smyslov could play an even endgame forever and win. Kasparov, maybe. But with the slightest of initiative, Garry could turn it into something special, Smyslov not as likely. The best positional players were some of the best endgame players, and the best attackers just weren’t. Some people just do some things very well, and other things, not as much, and that’s a widespread thing amongst chess styles.
@timperalta94302 жыл бұрын
@@amosdraak3536 on-point insight. Korchnoi too had that gift that Smyslov had. Capablanca, Karpov and Carlsen are positional masters, and all are excellent in the endgame. I think a part of the handful players who are really good (but not too exceptional) in both tactics and strategy are Caruana, Aronian, and Kramnik. As per Garry, he not only looks for the initiative to make an attack or gain an advantage, but he also looks at his opponents’ initiative of making mistakes. If you read “My Great Predecessors”, he would always analyze the losing player’s moves as questionable and unnecessary (even at move 6 or so!) even when engines see them as a draw. You cannot expect less from someone who sees 40 moves ahead!

@jeffjones69512 жыл бұрын
Capture was "en passant" (in passing)
@Ziolek.20002 жыл бұрын
@@jeffjones6951 Interesting, I just googled the rule. I recall seeing it before but never actually understood or knew of it. Now I do thanks! (If anyone reading this also didn't: If a pawn on its first move advanced 2 square the enemy pawn can move the square that was just passed and take the pawn as if it only advanced 1 square.)
@jeffjones69512 жыл бұрын
@@Ziolek.2000 The initial pawn 2-square move was invoked in the 16th or 17th Century to speed up the game, bringing in the modern era of chess. However, pawn theory required that a pawn could not pass an adjacent enemy pawn without the opportunity for capture. So "en passant" was introduced to preserve this pawn principle
