Wow... I'd almost forgotten how fast she was at this point in her high school career. I mean she just pulled away from some tough competition early and never let up... never once slowed down... just left a trail of fire behind her all the way...

This is the first time I've ever watched a cross country race instead of competing in one and now I wish I had never stopped running competitively. I quit after my sophomore year of high school to keep playing soccer. 😔 Oh the scholarships I could've been offered.

Minnesota had some top runners back in the day. Emily Covert for years Battled with the Pings. I was at this race and not to take away from Emily's incredible performance and record during this race, but there was a battle going on further back. As the commentator said, "The Pings got off to a bad start." Study the start and you will see them get out of the blocks late and then they get cut off by some other squads. They are pushed to the back of the pack and forced to run on the outside. By the time they are first spotted @2:20 they are 11 seconds back in the masses. At the "1" K marker they are 8 seconds back and almost through the masses. Running at a faster pace then the leaders, too early in the race. @6:26 The Pings appear behind Emily in 4th and 5th spot! Then Emily takes off. @ 8:50 Grace and Lauren are still holding on at just 10 seconds behind Emily after running so hard through the first half. This would had been a different race if the Pings had had a better start. It's all part of racing, from training to crossing the finish line. I just really appreciate the effort and commitment these girls all put into their sport, even on a bad day.

Well, to be fair, perhaps it's only misleading because I remember Grace Ping's win when she was super young.

Clearly some unfortunate focus issues, but guys you missed on two big things. First it was clear at 3k if you did the quick math that she was cleanly under the course record yet you didn't seem to realize that till the final straight (more clear at the 4k too), and 2) The smiling thing is taught by several great coaches, particularly Melody Fairchild. The act of smiling opens up your throat and airways in such a way that it allows more oxygen for each breath.
