Some of the best information I've seen about EV tuning. Thanks for asking questions from a tuners perspective, and trying to focus on what EV tuning stepped process looks like. At some point one of my projects cars will result in an EV conversion.

haha yes it can be a bit frustrating at times, but also quite halarious when editing. We had one person eating in the background of a video that had made the company policy on not eating at any trade stands try to pull the video once in a panic/rage. Probably the best one yet, you seen them chomping away, see the camera, realise what is happening, and ninja slide out of the frame... 🤣 - Taz.

There's definitely ev torque tuning, especially for my electric mountain skateboard via VESC Tool. It was just a scary board to use, even when I incorporated a stiff wire handle as added stability feature to prevent from falling off the board almost every time i m not aware of how hard or soft i am squeezing the trigger. I am beginning to think it might be my trigger controler. Because it is actually an RC controller. Learn and evolve as I go. Awesome video always!

Love some EV content. I think there are allot similarities in a motorsport setting between ICE and EV its all about heat managnent and extracting the most from the available energy source. whilst your loosing the tuning side of extracting power from the engine. how you set up the complete package is now key to how it responds to the drivers inputs. It is similar to how much more advanced gearbox/chassis controls for sequential transmissions active dampers yaw control etc have evolved without a holistic approach to the whole vehicle a badly setup electronics package would make it awfull to race or drive. Brilliant look at the future.

What about electric rack and pinion? Will the VCU provide an input to plug into the electric motor on the rack so that the steering is "correct" for the speed of the car? And providing the right "feedback feel" to the driver (less at low speed, more at high speed, etc.)?
@Shiftheads3 жыл бұрын
Yeah you would have the output controlled by the vcu so it could control can or 0-5v type signal for electric power steering and vary voltage based on speed

Very good summary for those new to the EV World. I will say though, the comment on there not being "tuning" for the motor+inverter combination isn't exactly correct. There is a something called MPTA, Max Torque per Amp, which with certain control strategies it will need to be dialed in. Think about tuning your spark timing for MBT, same concept, just with electrons.
@blacklineindustries76023 жыл бұрын
Typical EV builder isn't messing with inverter/motor optimization. In most cases, the inverter is already configured and optimized for a particular motor by the inverter manufacturer. All the integrator/installer does is configure the inverter for the particular motor being used and that's it. With Cascadia hardware, you just pick a motor type and you're good to go. In the case of the VCU, you're tuning/calibrating the vehicle torque delivery, not tuning the inverter control characteristics. No doubt this might get done in a one-off application if you have a dyno and are an engineer but that's not anything 99.999% of EV builders are thinking about or doing.
@AustinBartz953 жыл бұрын
@@blacklineindustries7602 Fair enough that most EV Builders likely aren't diving that deep into the motor/inverter calibration since most will just be buying combos, and aren't having a custom motor designed for their application. However, there are a fair bit of driveability calibrations that can really only reasonably be done within the inverter. (Due to the round trip time of CAN being too long). I get that much of this will work "good enough", but not diving that deep is what will separate the hobbyists from the professionals, and I suspect as we dive further into an electrified world, the aftermarket will begin to want more control.

@emilen23 жыл бұрын
It's absolutely possible to tune an electric motor. You can raise battery amps, phase amps, battery voltage, and even change the electric field "timing" akin to vtec. It's just called flux- or field-weakening, where amps are used to cheat the motor to run faster rpm than the battery's voltage otherwise would restrict the motor to spin at. It's a big deal in the advanced DIY ebike community. Hacking electric cars seems more difficult though. I imagine all sorts of error codes if the car registers you fiddled with the motor controller.
