Based on legendary designer Virgil Exner's 'Forward Look' body, DeSoto's Adventurer was introduced to supplement the brand's well-known Fireflite series and, according to many classic car enthusiasts, is some of the finest metal to ever leave an American design studio. The spectacular code L Surf White and code P Adventurer Gold example you see here was assembled at Chrysler's Detroit, Michigan manufacturing facility and currently wears a clean, high quality restoration that has been exceptionally maintained.
Recognized as the first European to cross our famed Mississippi River, Hernando de Soto was considered North America's ultimate adventurer. As such, the Adventurer series became the DeSoto line's ultimate offering. And this car's classy metal moves thanks to an exclusive Hemispherical V8 that wears a correct S26-A-2311 engine stamp and turns hearty 9.5 to 1 compression into a stout 345 horsepower. Clocking in at 345 cubic inches, this square-bore mill was introduced as a slightly massaged match for Chrysler's renowned letter cars. The copy you see here appears to wear a roster of correct pieces from its freshly decaled Mopar air cleaners and high performance Carter carburetors all the way to its heavy duty radiator and green cap Mopar battery. And little details like fresh chrome valve covers, vivid "DESOTO FIREFLITE EIGHT" call-outs, correct squeeze clamps and a pair of fully restored horns round out the car's natural eyeball appeal.
Behind the FireFlite V8, a slick-shifting A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic sends power to a correct rear end. That tough driveline spins in a fully restored undercarriage that's complete with Chrysler's robust torsion bars and stiff outrider springs. At the corners of that undercarriage, heavy duty power drum brakes ensure solid, fade free stops. At the center of the car's solid floors, a traditional true dual exhaust system employs fresh turbo mufflers that sound deep and civilized. And all this road-worthy hardware rides on old school wire wheels which spin pliable 235/75R15 Firestone FR721 whitewall tires.

Front and rear bench seats, which still feel firm to the touch, prop an attractive combination of two-tone vinyl under plaid centerpieces. Above that carpet, a Surf White dash hangs a fresh gray pad, fully rebuilt gauges, triple-range pushbutton transmission controls and a correct AM radio over a prominent Big Daddy Don Garlits autograph. And in front of the driver, a two-tone steering wheel spins a chrome horn ring around an intricate DeSoto logo.

This was the first muscle car I ever drove, I was about 13-14, my Stepdad let me drive it, it was black, had the gold package, hemi with dual quads, dual exhaust, torqueflite and it was a convertible, it was like being in a rocketship, I have never forgotten that ride with him, it put me on a very successful career in the automotive trade, God bless him, rest in peace pops,

My buddy next door's mother had a new butter yellow with a white top Adventurer convertible. She looked like Elizabeth Taylor. Going for a ride on a Summer day with the top down was an experience in the "top ten" of my memory.

Bought one just like this car (only it was a convertible) for $200 in 1964. Drove it for a year and a half cleaned it up, did minor repairs, and replaced the tail pipes so they came out under the bumper to keep the exhaust tips under the tail lights from rusting.then happened to find the right guy that gave me $ 500 for it

My dad , Ernest Johnson , of Louisville , Ky. owned two of these 1957 Desotos . One was a Firedome and one was a Fireflite . This was around 1960 . Cars as late as 62-64 could not touch dad's Desotos in a drag-race . They had 130 mph on the ( ribbon ) speedometer and would peg the ribbon . man does this take me back.....oh I remember it so well. The faulty electrical system with the amp needle wagging like a dogs tail (see @1:38 notice amp gauge). That needle should not be kicking like that......

The erratic ammeter was normal. The electro-mechanical voltage regulators acted as primitive pulse chargers at low revs. It would settle down when actually driving.

Amazing to see top-of-the-line model with heater delete option! Imo, this car would look better with original golden hupcaps and correct widewhites instead of wire wheels. Also outside mirrors are non-mopar aftermarket type. Nice Adventurer, though.

Good calls. The mirror stands should angle forward. There are others around with the (probably Kelsey-Hayes) wires, so maybe they were an option. But of course the one-more-gold-thing gold wheel covers are the best. Someone below noticed no heater stuff under the hood. I noticed no heater controls - they weren't integrated into the dash but were a chrome thing below it. And of course no AC, which would have been an excellent integrated unit. These are really big problems. I would want AC on anything, even if it had to be the modern retrofit ones like you see on Jay Leno for cars from before they had AC. They are integrated into the dashboard instead of a hang on unit. Probably for about $10K!

I had to go back to the video and view the under-the-hood portion to see the heater was left off. I'm always surprised when I see a car with the heater delete, unless it's a serous racer. I would NEVER have one, I want a car that's loaded to the gills. Ironically this car did have a factory radio. I had a 1957 Plymouth with factory heater and dealer-installed radio (no pushbuttons.) Then I had a 1960 Dodge with factory everything except power seat and A/C. The previous owner added the power seat and I added the A/C, which I took off a junked car with factory A/C. I also put in a new engine because the old one was kaput, and I found out (the resultingly easy way) I could not have installed the factory A/C without the engine being out of the car.

looking at this car once more, I noticed it doesn't have a passenger heating system. There is a black plate covering up where the heater core and blower motor would have been.

While you don't have to be a genius to come up with ingenious car designs this one certainly possesses genius. Ditto Exner. The most sophisticated sense of studied carelessness ever. For sure, but we need to remember that the top of the line Chev Bel Air was at least a thousand dollars less than the upper end De Soto models. That doesn't sound like much today, but it was substantial in '57.

I had a 1957 Adventurer (black) in 1960's. Awesome car, but very prone to body rust. Accountants killed the Hemi in Desoto for 1958; did same in Chrysler 300 for 1959. Great shame great cars are expected to make a profit like run-of-mill wheels. Should be part of overhead.

First American car to offer one horsepower per cubic inch as standard equipment. The 355 horse 354 in the '56 300 B was an option, not standard, as was the '57 Chevy fuelie, and the '57 Adventurer beat the 283-horsepower fuelie to the market, anyhow.
