This is part 2 of a 3 part video where I show my methods of peeling logs for a variety of applications like fence posts, rails, garden stakes, tree supports etc. with various tools. Here in Part 2, I use a Draw knife and Chisel.

Spending time outdoors doing projects with various machines and tools - anything from cutting trees, firewood, clearing brush, milling wood, plowing snow, reviewing, repairing & fabricating equipment. Doing landscaping and maintenance on my forested property using my Kubota tractor.
And its not all work!! Gotta take time to play - after turning my pond into a skating rink, and a whole bunch more of outdoor activities.

How's she goin'? Peeling bark is an endless job so it seems, so having some decent tools and techniques to do it makes the job go a lot easier!! Take 'er easy!!

It's going good Mike. At times it does seem endless. Definitely having a variety of tools and using different techniques helps out a lot. Although, it does consume a fair bit of time when there are a lot of logs to peel It's very therapeutic. Have a great week!

Peeling the logs looks like a satisfying job 👍🏻. This will sound weird but my father in law was a trapper and he would use the draw knife on big beaver pelts to shave some of the dried off fat. Great video Paul, have a great Saturday 👍🏻🙋🏼‍♂️🙂🍻

Good evening Luc, the draw knife is razor sharp, although that is the 1st time I have heard a draw knife being used for that I can see it doing a good job. It is very satisfying and therapeutic using the draw knife. Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

When I built a snake rail fence a couple of years ago I had to strip the bark off about 60 logs. Not a job I want to to again any time soon. Good demo video! I found for cedar the soon you debark it after cutting it down the better. Take care Paul!

Thanks Brian, I actually enjoy debarking the logs. You're right it is easier to remove the bark on freshly cut logs. Have a fantastic weekend!

Hi Paul, I must have a hundred hours on a draw knife, that used to be my job as a kid. My dad would make yard mushrooms out of pine and he would set them up on the jig and I had to draw knife them before he carved them out. I love that fiskars hatchet, I have one too, maybe you can do a video on how you keep it razor sharp. I'd be interested to see that I need to hone my sharpening skills. Pun intended.

Hi Jeff, that's a pretty cool job to do as a kid. I worked a lot with my dad when I was a kid as well. I am thinking that I had seen your fiskars hatchet in one of your videos, they are great. Sharpening the draw knife and hatchet may make a good video to do do at some point. Have a super week.

Hello! I like that draw knife, it works well. It sure makes the log last longer with the bark off. I don't know if you can buy a tool like a draw knife anymore? Thanks for sharing.

Good morning, my dad gave me the draw knife about 16 years ago, it was one of his favorite tools that he used. The logs do last longer peeled. You can still buy them but most of them are junk in comparison to the quality of the one I have. Thanks for stopping by John I really appreciate it!

Hey Paul. The chisel works well. The draw knife seems to dig in more than the chisel, which do you prefer?
@JelenOutDoors
@JelenOutDoors 3 ай бұрын
They both work well depending on how tight the bark is and how much moisture / sap is between the bark and the sap wood of the log. The draw knife is more enjoyable. I had to dig in a little more with the draw knife because the logs had sat for a while. Afreshly cut log I would have used less angle and the draw knife would have glided as it peeled the bark off. Have a great weekend Kenny!
