Hey all, today were are taking a quick look at 13th and 14th gen power consumption issues and how to easily fix them by following Intel SPEC for the chip.
Intel has for 13900K/14900K a 253w limit in the "Extreme Config" on both PL1 and PL2. For the 13900KS and 14900KS, the "Extreme Config" is 320w on PL1 and PL2.
This can be referenced here on Intel's website. edc.intel.com/content/www/us/...
Again, these are difficult to find specifications and should be made clearer to the end user and enforced by motherboards as default. Either way, you should follow their maximum recommendations if you want to run in a "stock" config.

Finally Intel has published their official recommend 'Intel Default' settings. They say to use the highest profile compatible with your motherboard. Just as I said in this video, you should be using 253/253 for PL1 and PL2 on K/KF chips. And 320w/320w PL1 and PL2 for KS chips. The chart also mentions to NEVER EXCEED 400A for current limit, again in line with what I said here. Finally Intel is getting things clearly defined and laid out for users and motherboards. There is also ZERO mention of using Intel Fail Safe SVID, this should have never been recommended by anyone as it used excessive and potentially unsafe voltages. cdn.videocardz.com/1/2024/05/INTEL-DEFULAT-SETTINGS-STATEMENT.jpg

I saw the Intel sheet already but how to setup PL4 on ASUS boards ? I use Intel defaults settings with all options from other guides. The question is: when I have all at Intel defaults and set IA CEP on disabled I got nearly the same performance in CB23 (only 500 points less). If IA CEP is enabled the performance is over 50% less! But disabled IA CEP all other Intel defaults !? Wondering too: IA CEP is introduced by Intel in February this year to disabled IA CEP (there is a new microcode included this make it possible). So it save to use IA CEP disabled or not ? BTW: I use the „trained“ SID behaviour because it’s perfect matched with the cpu which is built in. It always need less power and it’s more effective than undervolting the cpu! Even OCCT extreme small varaint runs much better and cooler with „trained“ Would like to know if LLC3 or LLC4 is better for these Intel defaults setups. With trained bios shows 1,2xv with Intel failsafe it’s near 1,4v ! A hint: when loading xmp always check the memory controller voltage my uses at 8000mhz (48gb) 1,4v!! It runs stable with 1,225v only! Best-case scenario or typical was not stable on my old 12900KS. My 14900KS is SP111 P127 E79 MEM 86 and with optimized bios unreal 4 and 5 crashes during shader compilation or Hogwarts with out of video memory message with a 48GB RAM videocard ^^ Edit: I thought undervolting the cpu is done by actual vrm core voltage?

I now have it rock solid with PL1 and PL2 at 265 and temps are cool as even with constant heavy load. I also put a 360 AIO cooler and new case in to boot and the system runs warm, not like a crashing toaster any more. I'm actually very disappointed with the motherboard manufacturers as I want a rock solid system, not push it with OC and crashing. This is on them and its wrong. I also am using an ASROCK motherboard which is great but some of the settings are quite unclear but its close enough to do these settings and leave the others alone.

After I changed my settings according to the suggestions in your video, my Cinebench multicore performance benchmark went up 2700 points, with with negligible changes in temperature. (haven't tested for crashes yet, but I'm still convinced your settings are the best solution to the overheating problem so far) Besides these changes, should we also enable Dynamic Tuning (so Intel DTT works), GNA, and undervolt protection? Or the PC will be the most stable and perform best without these settings enabled (and the respective drivers installed on windows)?

I believe the power limits for the 14900KS chips are increased to 320 watts on short and long (supported Intel extreme limits) and the Amperage limits stock can be safely set to 420 Amps. If not using the extreme limits allowed by Intel then 253 Watts short/long and 400 Amps would apply but it will never reach the 6.2Ghz clocks. (At least that I found) I'm still playing with mine but these chips are actual beasts and except for the ridiculously-low number of PCIe lanes, are pretty awesome. Thanks for this really insightful video and glad that someone is explaining this plainly. These changes should be standard on all motherboards and none of these ridiculous chip-killing defaults.

You are correct about makers of motherboards leaving CPU settings unrealistic. @@korloaster Hi. So, I would try to see what combinations of current for CPU core ICCMax, voltages for the turbo boost short power max and turbo boost power max, is needed for your CPU and motherboard, by using the Intel XTU app. Then, you will have to undervolt the CPU in the core voltage offset to give it a better performance. This is all done within Intel XTU in the advance tuning page--the app has several ways to tune your system. For my MIS Z790 Ace, and the i9-14900K, with a 360-cooler, I had it stable by undervolting the CPU by -.125 V, using 315 A for CPU IccMax, 263W for turbo boost short power max, and 253 W for turbo boost power max. At these setting the system runs between 80-90C when stress tested, and with benchmark result of 13,400 in the Intel XTU app. So, without overclocking it, I am near similar results overclocing it, but with temperatures reaching 90-100C when stress testing the system. That is too hot and I get crashes, especially when testing it using the AVX2 stress test, within Intel XTU. After you figure out your stable numbers, input those in the MSI BIOS. That will be a bit tricky and time consuming, as you have to become familiar with the settings. It has a lot of settings that will need to be changed, also. Let me know if you need further assistance. Now, for an I9-14900K the max Icc current is 307 A and 253 W of max power for the short-term and long-term turbo situations. Double check those numbers, also, on the Intel site, or call them. My amps and power usage are a bit higher.

Omg finally someone online that knows what they are talking about!! for the love of god i am so sick of seeing all these recent videos over the intel stability issues etc. Like yeah, that's what happens when you try and pair a $30 air cooler with a 14900k and pump unlimited watts/voltage to it while also upping the multiplier as well all because they see some tech tuber showing them how to optimize there computer for extra frame rates in cyberpunk Honestly its just mostly marketing b.s for the most part and believe they are just trying to blow up intel's spot to sell more upcoming 8000 AMD chips.
@MhillPlays

It’s probably a few idiots on Reddit, which got social media traction. And now it’s blown out of proportion as if all chips are dying. The thing is Intel oversees these settings that AIB’s use, they would not allow these parameters if cpu death is at risk. It would seriously damage their reputation and lose customers to AMD pretty quickly.

@@theendoftheline Yes point is most air coolers are not rated to dissipate that many watts worth of heat, especially given the insane amount of power they are pumping into these chips its just a failure waiting to happen. I am sure that this may be dependent of your location and how your local climate is also when using an air cooler vs liquid but also failures are that sometimes people just end up with horrible silicon from the get-go and if that's the case, they should just RMA the chip. So i do believe that most of thee issues are due to poor quality silicon from day 1, paired with improper cooling since day 1, causing degradation as they are probably running cinbench over and over trying to pull the highest score.

This was super helpful, thank you. Unfortunately my 13900k on z790 e gets really unstable with any undervolt > 0.01500. It probably needs to be rma'd after all the issues i have had. Originally I had it on xmp tweaked and auto. It started crashing in Overwatch after about 7 months and I could not run Helldivers without capping to 60fps. It is pretty stable now with 380-253-253, multi core enhance disabled, SVID on auto, 1.38 on my corsair 6000 ram, CPU LLC Auto (3), with a 0.01500 undervolt. Cinebench 23 39k and i was finally able to run helldivers at higher than 60fps without crashing. Another thing I am worried about is that I was not able to install a thermal grizzly contact frame on this board as the ilc screws were too short. I found some new screws so I am going to install it and try again. :) Thanks again, really helpful.

@@maegnificant It started about 3 months ago. Had the cpu since release basically, mainly loss of rendering device and hard locks needing a hard reboot. I originally thought it was my GPU and i did literally everything - ddu in safemode, tried older drivers, lower clocks, better cooling in case, eventually formatted.. Then I finally put my old 1080ti in and it did the same thing. Thats when I knew like, it's not the gpu. I had it set on xmp tweaked so I set to xmp 1 alone. This legitimately fixed my issues for about a month - then it started happening again. Before i saw this video I just had lowered the multiplier on p cores to 52. This was mostly stable but yeah I could kinda feel the perf loss and it would still do it randomly. Now with these settings it passes every test, is wayy cooler and just feels way more stable. The biggest test for me is helldivers like, I could not run that game at ALL. It crashed in the tutorial until I capped it at 60fps. I have a 240hz zowie and I play overwatch mainly capped at 400fps. (Yes higher fps than hz makes a difference.) The reason I am saying this is that yeah like I am pushing ram/cpu IO when running at such high fps - even at 1080p. anyways yeah no issues at all now, feels super good,

One of the first tweaks I did when I built my 13700k system built was change the bios settings for power to be in spec and undervolt. The difference in CPU temps was something like ~10c just from doing that (with a bump in cinbench score to boot) with an air cooler and I was actually kind of annoyed my motherboard which is sold as a 'creator' motherboard didn't adhere to intel spec out of the box. Also it's not as in depth as the intel spec sheet but the intel ARK pages list base and max turbo power, that's what I used when I set my machine up.
