If you've got an Intel Core i9 processor (especially a Core i9-14900K or 13900K) then you might have noticed some stuttering and stability issues. This includes games losing frame rates, being unstable or crashing a lot.
Turns out it's your processor, but it's the motherboard that's the problem. You might have seen some of this in the news! (see here • Intel says no to stabi... )
Igor's lab got a statement direct from Intel about this:

And this update direct from Intel

Following that various motherboard manufacturers released BIOS updates and settings changes for motherboards to counter the problem. One of them included Asus.

Asus's latest updates include Intel Baseline profiles which reduce the Power Limits and other things to help with stability. I used my i9 and the Strix Gaming WiFi 2 to show you how to do it!

I should make it clear that when I say "Asus wins", I merely mean for making systems stable. Not for getting the best performance results or benchmark scores. It's just nice to play without crashing. I am also no expert on BIOS settings. If you know how best to improve performance while maintaining stability please feel free to suggest it

*******You should NOT set the vid behaviour to intel failsafe unless everything else was tried and the cpu continues to be unstable*****. Fail safe behaviour is intended as a last resort . SVID behavior influences AC load-line, which ties into Vcore. Setting it to fail-safe sets AC LL to the essentially the highest value possible, which in turn increases Vcore. This means that the vast majority of chips set at fail-safe are effectively overvolted, when that may not be necessary and can even be counterproductive. the changes to iccmax and pl1+pl2 and disabling multicore enhancements should normally resolve the problem.

Be aware that setting SVID Behaviour to Intel's Fail Safe might be a bad idea for your CPU's life expectancy, as it will grossly overvolt it to over 1.5V under load. I have seen it go as far as 1.57V while running Cinebench. Set it rather to auto or Typical.

Well I tried these exact settings you showed on the video for my 14900k. I never had crashes in games but my pc heated my room like a furnace and stutters in game. These settings make my pc run hotter. For me I found I was happiest with just applying the Intel baseline profile and not adjusting anything. I know I am gimping the processor with 280 amps etc but now my pc runs ice cool even in games with my aio and my games run better. I will stick with the "incorrect" Asus Intel baseline with svid set to auto instead of Intel failsafe.

Something is off with this new Bios, the 2 cores that boost to 6Ghz seems to be doing it in games now which results in some crazy temp spikes. I was playing BF2042 which does result in some hot spikes in the 80's for a moment, but those 2 cores spiked to 100c, yet actually gameplay is in the mid 60's. I do not understand that kind of spike. When I built my 13700k I was very disappointed Gigabyte's bios by default on a creator board was the same "Unlimited Everything" they use on gaming boards. Took a couple hours to track down all the bios settings I had to change to get things running at intel spec but it was worth it. Went from thermal throttling instantly when benchmarking to running at about 91c on air and like you mentioned Cinebench scores were a little higher because the CPU wasn't throttling. After also undervolting temps dropped to 89c and minimal change to benchmarking scores. I know most of the publicity has been around the 13900k/14900k but some 13700k owners have also reported problems so yeah. Also Asus's baseline spec isn't actually set properly, there are still some changes that need to be made to be properly in spec according to various reporting after Asus released the bios. That said it's better than it was so I guess it's a step in the right direction. Still waiting on Gigabyte to actually get it right, they released a bios that was still wonky so I didn't bother upgrading then they pulled it a few days later.

@@massoudwazir6389 Not surprising with a sample size of one. As far as I'm aware it seems to be luck whether a particular 13700 or 900 can handle the outrageous defaults motherboards were running and overall it seems the 13900/14900 were 'failing' more. That said the 13700k does seem to be affected and for my own peace of mind I'd rather run at spec.

Enabling PMIC to treat each memory stick separately and not as an entire block, you will find additional stability especially if you are using 4 sticks of memory. As he said, the first re-boots after changing values train the system to your CPU and memory and storage devices. That first boot can take 5-10 minutes. Be patient, and then some, and then some more. It will finally boot to Windows or give you a BIOS message that says it doesn't like a setting you changed. (doesn't tell you which one, unfortunately.)

I’ve purchased several memory sets thinking it was 4 dimms, then 2 dimms, xmp, no xmp. The only solution I’ve had work is to disable Cstates, disable speedstep, and lock speeds at 5.8ghz on all P cores, and 5.5ghz on e cores. Very frustrating with all the CTDs in PUBG and other games.

I'm not going to lie I'm about to build with this same motherboard and CPU, however I've heard horrible stories of updating bios and it makes me kinda nervous cause I'm not all that intelligent when it comes to bios settings

Dont be afraid about the bios update “If you are running the same motherboard as shown in the video”, you should have access to bios flashback incase things dont go well The motherboard has dual bios, so in the event that you experience something go south You will still be safe

So I’m worried about updating the bios to the new version so I just manually set everything from the Intel spread sheet, but with the Asus intel base like I’m this video it was set IA TDC to Intel baseline, any idea what IA TDC is? And any idea what it should manually be set to??

I wish Intel still made motherboards for retail/small OEM purchases. My bread and butter is machines for business use and are never going to be overclocked. There is no money in warranty service. Even worse when a lot of RMAs were done needlessly because of the default BIOS settings by ASUS and other manufacturers.

because he's only looking at benchmarks and not testing gaming stability. Which I've spent this week doing. Make up your own mind. Yes, it's a downgrade for performance/benchmarks and yes, it doesn't tick Intel's boxes, but it sure does stop the crashes and that's what matters to me and probably others.

The only should change is the Core CPU and long term and short term duration. With these settings my PC was idling at 88 degrees. Intel fail safe should not be turned on.

13700k runs terrible with this. way better to disable all eco cores and turn higher llc on and increase watt and time and that to 384 and lock cpu on 5.1 ghz and 4.0 ring. way more stable way less stutter smoother gameplay and fine temps. yes cpu drops to arround 21-22k cinebench but way smoother gameplay is worth not to have e cores.

in my mind this was still a huge failure on behalf of motherboard manufacturers. no overclocking features should ever be "on" by default. it never should have happened. also, these fixes while seem quite simple to me are going to be VERY intimidating to users with less knowledge. not everyone who owns a PC is tech savvy. i hope that moving forward intel and the various companies that produce motherboards resolve this issue or oversight depending on how you view it. i know several people who have migrated to AMD as a result of this debocile. honestly, I don't blame them. we are talking about a lot of money when it comes to building a PC in today's financial climate.

The intel "baseline", "performance" or even "extreme" profiles will absolutely *destroy* performance in your Asus rig. Will your PC run cooler? Yeah. Will your cinebench drop to 30k, sometimes even 15k?! ...ummm YEAH, that too! lol.... Honestly it's better to go back to the Asus OC profiles, learn about each setting yourself in BIOS, along with some settings in XTU, and just try to strike a reasonable balance between daily performance vs. temperature. Games will never exert the load that benchmark apps do, thats why theres no need to worry about your system overheating during a gaming session provided youve also sorted out some of the extreme issues happening... and cooling solution is a big one too!

Intel solution is stupid imo , basically it cuts ur performance when it's surpasses the power limit, the problem is why is it reaching the power limit in the first place? , i think a better fix is to undervolt ur cpu , with undervolting u get lower power draws , lower temps and get this BETTER PERFORMANCE.
