Frankly, you can mix old with new, stonework with a clean looking drywall with pocket lighting. It would look lovely. Sometimes, I feel that trying to keep everything old looking makes it a bit too twee. A nice, clean, flat expanse on a ceiling seems perfectly appropriate.

Ben tornato Joseph!

Saving time now might get the job done faster, but will you be happy with it in the long term? I guess it depends on how authentic you want to keep it. Had hoped to be able to visit while I’m in Italy but it looks like that won’t work out this time.

Exactly my dilemma. I prefer to stay authentic but the ease of drywall is really tempting. Sorry you can't stop by for a visit. Perhaps next time 🙂

@@housemarche me, too. Next time if I get here with my husband, he’s not afraid to drive here. I am not so fond of the prospect and depend on my cousin who planned her own getaway and also had to deal with her mother getting Covid. 😷 That’s going around like a fiend right now.

What would that room have originally had overhead, wood beams with tiles between, or would it have been masonry? Truth be told, from my perspective (of one not having to do the work...) neither solution you suggest would be especially "authentic looking". However, the cement beams could be boxed in with wood (my flight of fancy sees one cutting "u" shaped channels in natural round beams, but more realistically one could box them in with rough sawn boards, mitering the corners so the finished effect would appear to be a solid beam. I've seen smaller, more rustic ruins on other YT channels that seem to have had ceilings that resemble vigas with latillas, perhaps something with a similar look might be appropriate? (I'm thinking latillas or some sort of tile might be easier than plastering overhead. One could even use plywood cut to fit the spaces between the beams, and attach the tiles or whatever (a nicely finished skin coat of plaster?) while on the workbench (that you will make with sawhorses and planks - possibly the planks you would then use to box in the cement beams), then lift the finished section overhead, and finally box in the cement beams. Gosh, it's amazing how easy it is to butt in and provide ideas for potential solutions when one is far away, has no idea of the local availability of traditional construction materials, no idea of the tools that are on hand, and, most importantly, does not have to do the work! 🥴😁

The ceiling in this room original. It was added back in the 50s when the room above it was added. It was done to make room for the carpenter's growing family. Otherwise it was have been terracotta tiles over wood beams. There are several potential solutions which is why it's so difficult to decide. I plan to ask the local craftsmen for ideas. Thanks for the ideas.

drywall, no spotlights then fake beams using reclaimed older timber. older the better

This is a great idea! There is a construction supplier just down the road that specializes in old world building materials. They have the original wood beams in long lengths. If the price is right, this would probably be the best option.

Best bet! You can still fur the drywall down for space to run wire and fit wafer lights, and furring will also flatten ceiling plane inconsistencies.

@@housemarche I'm not a builder, I just think it would work to hide the concrete.
