There were also changes to Mario’s death animations, too. In the GBA version, Mario’s deaths were a lot more brutal and cartoonish. He actually gets burned and electrocuted (with his whole skeleton showing and everything), and he lays on the ground when he gets hit by an enemy or spikes. In the remake, the deaths were toned down. He just falls off the screen in classic 2D Mario fashion. Same goes for if he gets burned or electrocuted. The only one they kept was him getting squashed, and a new one was introduced when Mario touches those ice enemies in Slippery Summit. In Mystic Forest, there are these bat enemies where in the GBA version, if Mario touches one, he goes in this weird “choking” animation and make sounds of being choked before falling down on his back. In the remake, this was also toned down where Mario just briefly flails his arms around in panic before falling on his back. And the weird thing is: those old GBA deaths animations ARE actually in the remake, fully animated and everything, but they go unused within the game’s files.

My hypothesis for this is because Mario vs. Donkey Kong was released in 2004, before E10+ existed, and they toned it down in 2024 to keep the E rating because it's pretty obvious the original would get E10+ if the rating existed at the time.

Laying on the ground as opposed to falling off the screen is not "brutal" or "cartoonish" lol. The only ones that could be considered brutal were his old burn and shock death animations which it's pretty obvious why those two were changed. And him getting choked by bats never even made sense, why do bats make you choke? Another one that makes sense for them to have changed.

Mario does actually still have a crashing fall animation, his falling ability's just been significantly buffed (to the point where lethal fall heights in the original game have become his new normal crashing height, more or less). Not sure if he can actually lose a life from a high enough fall in the remake, though.

@@Geobot3000 Nothing against the scaling down of difficulty in games, but a lot of the changes done for this remake feel like they completely dumbed it down to an unfun degree. The star system for completing a level is boiled down to just collecting the presents (before, you had to beat the level with a par score to earn one, which normally required collecting them all, taking out enemies, as well as reaching the end of the level within a certain time limit), the risk factor of watching your jumps is removed, and the increased invulnerability frames look like they can make brute-forcing through the game too easy. (World 4 is complete butt-hurt to get the stars for in the original game, but it was still fun as it was challenging) I'm not going to hate on the game for it, but I think the demo's as far as I'll go for playing it.

You're a child. The fact that removing scores makes you go "guess I'll find my gba" as if the remake is worse than the original is laughably petty. Removing the scores does nothing, collecting the presents to get the gold stars is just as fun and challenging as getting the high score to get them in the original was. If someone actually mods in the scores for the reason you're saying, they're whiny nitpickers like you. What about that is pandering lol you don't seem to know what that word means. Getting the target time on the time attacks is difficult and fun as well just like getting the high scores were. You do get a gold time medal from beating them so you do get another reward. The time trials unlock after beating the final boss, gold stars just unlock the expert levels.

Removing the scores *absolutely* takes away the challenge. In the GBA version, you had to utilize everything in each level to get your score high enough to unlock that level's gold star. In the remake, you just collect the 3 presents. You can disagree with me, but don't just lie to save face. When I said the changes were "pandering," I was obviously referring to Nintendo removing the skill ceiling (which is their specialty). The mallet being restored barely does anything, again only making things ever so slightly easier. They didn't take any challenge out of the game lol, everything is still just as challenging and fun. Everyone is talking about the dialouge change in the intro and lenient fall height. But what I am most sad about, is that they took out the iconic faint animation Mario always had in the Mario vs Donkey Kong series whenever you lose. Also, I think the 94 version should've gotten the remake treatment rather than the GBA version, it is a really underrated gem thatvwas overshadowed by the GBA version. The 94 version had levels and mechanics not featured in the GBA one since it's an entirely different game, I also like the music in that game more especiallythe fights against Donkey Kong, plus it would give Donkey Kong Jr some spotlight.

Outside of the crashing down animation which is still present just the fall height was adjusted, most of the charm removing details were for animations far less feasible to do with 3D Models compared to sprites. This was definitely a lower budget product and you can tell the devs felt bad about having to lose those details since they go out of their way whenever they can to add new animations.

Two brand new worlds with all new mechanics, new banger music in some areas, actual animated cutscenes, two player and time attack modes, amazing looking graphics and new cool little animation details like the ones shown off in this video. But because a few voice lines were replaced with other ones, or the score system was removed even though all it ever made you do was kill an extra enemy or two to beat the score, or this specific song wasn't remixed, or because there's no longer fall damage that only slowed down the pacing of the game, oh boy the original is so much better and the remake is "bad" or "generic" in comparison. That mentality is laughable.

Like others said, Mario still stumbles after some falls, they just made the height more generous this time. With the exception of the strangely absent voice lines in the intro cutscene, I like how a bunch of the subtle changes actually added more personality to the game. I also think it’s cool they still kept Charles’ voice recordings rather than having Kevin Afghani redo all the VA. I assume Nintendo likely has an agreement with Charles that if it’s a remake of a game he originally recorded for they’ll keep the VA he already recorded years ago, but if it’s a brand new game like Super Mario Bros Wonder then it’s Kevin we’ll be hearing.

"Strangely absent voice lines?" What're you talking about? What's strange about it, the intro was redone cause y'know this is a remake and some weren't used. Others were out in there place if anything was removed and lines like "come back here you big monkey," Mario's Italian gibberish as if he was masking himself swearing, and him laughing at DK before the final boss were changed to portray Mario more friendly. All the personality of the original is still here plus even more added by the new stuff.

In tons of games Mario is shown being surprised, sad, and upset plenty of times. That being a rare thing to see isn't true and that isn't why that was charming. What's charming is seeing Mario really just want to work things out with DK, trying to be nice but being forced to fight DK anyway when he insists.

Also, yes the game is outdated, yes the original was too, the remake just overhauls the graphics and tweaks a few minor things, it's still outdated. You just have low expectations man, what can I say? And yes, you can emulate the GBA game quite easily, try it out, emulation is the best thing that's happened to retro gaming like, ever. So yeah, someone who bootlicks Nintendo, so... Your average Nintendo fan.
