Good things happen everywhere, bad things can happen anywhere. When I traveled to London twice, i was warned by many of my friends and colleagues that u should be extra careful, especially after 08:00PM, as crime rate is very high. In Bangalore, i can roam around till 00:00 midnight without worrying. However there were robberies, rapes, attacks in Bangalore too. It is just that as I am from here i know certain safety measures almost intuitively, which I won't be knowing about london or for that matter any other place on earth. That's about it...Just know them, u will be fine. My only tip to anyone who comes to india would be...Keep in mind that things may or may not be very different but it is all about perceptions. Keep an open mind...U r not traveling to a different planet. Bottom line: It is all the same.....

That may or may not be true. I think there are many different types of crime rates, such as violent crime, gun crime, property crime and more so it's difficult to just compare one crime rate. I know the USA has the most gun crime in the world. If your point is that India is safe, then I'd agree with that

I agree. My AC technician said 1 hr..After 4hrs I called him. He said he is stuck in traffic and said he is coming..He showed up next day. So 1 hr = 1 day. This was in 2013 when I was living there.. I lived there between 2013 and 2017. Most of the technicians give you the same reason.. traffic. Maybe it is different now.

I have enjoyed several of Ben's videos. I just returned from a trip to Mumbai, it was exciting, and I hope to visit again. About Mumbai, well, I stayed at a really nice 5-star hotel, so the food, service, chauffeured car, everything was amazing. I was very comfortable. What's shocking 1) it is brutally hot and steamy in the city when you're outside of air conditioning 2) stray dogs, heartbreaking, you want to bring all of them home, if you could. 3) Trash on the streets, overflowing dumpsters even in nicer neighborhoods 4) the crazy traffic, the amount of time it takes to go just a couple of miles by car. What I liked: 1) People are very friendly with foreigners and helpful. Almost everyone in Mumbai speaks English 2) The food is super delicious, great vegetarian options, and very affordable even at upscale restaurants 3) The sea views are spectacular 4) Beautiful south Mumbai old gothic architecture

I went to Gurgaon on business and was amazed at how developed and fancy many places were. I was very careful about food and still got sick but it passed very quickly. I honestly really enjoyed the food. However, as far as cleanliness it felt like there was a standard that people keep their own personal spaces very very clean, so offices and homes and malls were very clean but there was not a lot of respect for public spaces. I did a little touring around to other places in North India as well and although tourist attractions were well kept there was a lot of trash in the streets compared to almost any country I have visited.

If you have time, you may plan to visit the eastern parts of India as well. Every part of India is different from the other and the East (Bengal) is known as the center of art and culture. You will find many heritage buildings like Victoria Memorial, Fort William, Writers Building, Jorasanko Thakurbari, Belur Moth, and the list goes on. This is the place of many Nobel laureate of India (Rabindranath Tagore, Amartya Sen, Abhijit Banerjee). The people speak Bengali, which is known as the sweetest language of the world. The sweets of Bengal are also quite popular, but you will not find them elsewhere as Bengalis are usually lazy, and happy within their own boundaries :). I love this video...this is the one video that has not criticised Indians for what they are...and everything in this video is accurate....my tip for foreigners would be 1. If you are from a developed country, there might be some shocks on how we do things here...but it is not bad as portrayed in media 2. Yeah pickpockets and theft is common in tourist area...but its okay to let your guard down once in a while...people who are close with you like a uber driver or hotel manager or the owner in your homestay might actually look out for you...if you are friendly they might even give tips on how to bargain and stuff.. 3. We may not follow same culture as westerners but most of the youngsters(in their 20s) in cities might be aware of your culture and will also acknowledge it....you can even talk about some global things like friends, K-Pop, BTS and stuff like that....Some of the Indian malls even screen some famous Hollywood movies to watch.... 4. Last but not the least....be friendly and try to learn some phrases of the local language...people really love it....whatever the place is...Indians really love to help the foreigners... After these tips and advices it all comes down to you are ready to take it.....some might find India enlightening some might find it just dirty...

I am a vegetarian.... But from what I have seen where I live (in South India), the most common meats eaten are usually chicken, goat and fish (mostly in coastal regions). Side note - this is only what I have seen but i don't really know much about other types of meat as I do not eat them.

More things foreigners should know about India 1) Beggars in religious places are often actually rich. Most of the beggars at traffic light are controlled by organised gangs. Some rare ones even kidnap kids and amputate arms and legs to make use of them for begging. If you want to help, donate food, money or clothes to those rough sleeping if you see them or give them to charitable trust that run shelters. 2) Drink packaged/bottled water as much as possible. It is likely the water that gets you the stomach bug. 3) Know how much to order and eat. Have an idea of what a portion size is and order to share. Ask the waiter. I have seen foreigners order 1 each, 2 side dishes, 1 starter and 1 dessert each. Most mains are meant for sharing between two unless you have a humongous appetite. Often 2 Biryanis can be shared by 3. If you eat too much you will get sick. 4) India does not have a tip culture, most places don't expect you to tip 5%, 10% or 20% of the bill. Because foreigners, especially from the USA tips so much, it has made expectation high. Rather tip only when the waiter or the restaurant goes out of their way to cater to you for some special needs. Do not tip more than 5%. Tip is good but not a must for delivery persons like Zomato etc. Small tips your cleaners, drivers gets you a lot if you stay for long term. 5) Trains are not how it is portrayed in media abroad. Long distance trains are descent and it is here where you interact with local people and gain experience. However don't do the mistake of boarding unreserved or non-ac compartments - that will be torture for foreigners, not because there's people above train, but general crowdedness, heat, lack of sleeping space and lack of hygienic toilets. I recommend the 3rd AC or 2nd AC. If you are a couple and require privacy, book 1st AC, but they cost as much as flight fare if not more. Some premium trains have pantry car and you can order food from the train. Check that out before buying a truckload of food before boarding. Other trains allow you to order from an App and it will get delivered to you at the station form a local caterer. I would not recommend that arrangement simply because sometime you need to find them when the train reaches and not the vice versa. It can be a hairy experience. 6) Always carry with you medicine for indigestion, fever, pain - all available over the counter. Never be shy of visiting a general practitioner if required. They are usually good and costs between $4-$10 a visit. 7) If you own an Indian SIM card, remember, Indians get scammed too, and most often by fellow Indians. Be very careful when dealing with tele-callers.

You're right about the meds you can buy here in a pharmacy for tummy aches. Grape fruit seed extract, we here in India do not use. The best and a very effective Indian alternate for that is - gripe water for children. I know it says 'for babies' but works very well for weak stomachs and gives immediate results in adults, when they have unbalanced stomach acids. (Woodwards is a famous brand) Some Indians who eat/drink out a lot in different cities, tend to use this as one of their their go to methods. The other recommendation for travellers with irritated tummy I would give is - probiotics and prebiotic effervescent tablets on a daily basis all through their trip. That way you can enjoy the food and go back with a stronger and healthier stomach. (wellbeing is a good brand) I use both methods and they work well.

My advice :- Stay away from touts , agents and local guides specially in north India. They can be found in front of airports, railway stations, bus stops, tourist destination etc. To avoid them , dont even look at them and if if you face anyone, just say firm " No " ( may be 20 times, thats it ! ) Just watch Karl Rock videos, he is doing really good job which should be done by governement actully.

Urbanisation is new to the Indian community. a lot of things are not conscious actions. someone keep remind them you do that and this for cleanness. its nit injected in the minds for automatic. once the new generation comes then the problem can go down. bcz in many families, they manage their homes very well in villages and towns, some times they are not even educated ppl. but traditionally they know how to keep home well and why that is important. the same rule applies for outside. once they move out from home such rule not come to the minds just bcz of not tuned such away. for the next generation, it will be automatic. as you said we are already noticing the changes. many not 100% follow the rules but they have strong intension for change.

Banning westerners from staying in Paharganj will go a long way in fixing India's image. I lived in Delhi for 15 fucking years less than 2 miles from Paharganj and I've never been there - yet every fucking Western Vlogger seems to think that's the best place to stay and spend 75% of their videos focusing on assholes there. You'll notice it's only westerners that do this shit - you'll never find a Korean vlogger doing this bullshit.
