@@ExpeditionOverland dear overlander, thank you guys so much for posting these episodes, I'm a huge fan of overlanding and have a 2 wheel drive 2004 Toyota 4 runner but still want to get into overlanding, I want to be the guy with a different truck who can make it like the 4x guys. Any thoughts?

Thanks for sharing. I've still got an 8274, circa 1977. Routine maintenance and care. In total, I own 22 WARN winches on everything from ATVs, to RUVs, to trucks and all my trailers. Never a tailgate Never a failure and great customer service AFTER the sale 🏆

What is up with everyone criticizing the video edit, I personally didn't find any issues with it. Not once during watching this was I thinking to myself "the music is to loud", or "he is muffled". Its like people have nothing better to do than to micro-critique every aspect of the video on KZbin. Its not like this is a network production where they spend 100k on video production for a 30 minute episode. This is a bunch of outdoor dudes (and dudette's) using dslr's and a slider with I would guess sony wireless lav mics. Probably have 4k in the entire setup and probably edit using FCP X, which is $300 (but still very capable).

yeah... synthetic line dose not "just fall to the ground"... look at any "outback challenge" or "4WD magazine TTC" ,you will see lots of syn line snapping back.

So, we want to keep selling gloves and line weights. Got it... Nice video, but reaching a bit in a couple of places. I’ve broken many wire ropes on tow trucks in my life (without injury, but very risky), so I will absolutely advocate using synthetic any time possible. Synthetic is more vulnerable though, so you want to stick to using it for personal applications where the risk of it touching broken and jagged things is low (ie in the woods on your 4x4). If you plan on using your winch for farm or industrial use, wire rope is totally the way to go. Anyway, a good video overall, especially for people who haven’t used a winch much, so thanks.

Question: When you say that the line must come off the bottom of the spool, do you mean relative to the winch itself, or relative to the ground? IE. can a winch be mounted inverted, or is that always bad? I've seen many applications where guys have mounted them upside down, but I wanted to hear an expert opinion.

Relative to mounting feet of winch I believe. Moving the lines point of pull to the opposing side of the drum as the mounting feet is probably more than doubling the leverage, which equates to a massive increase in load the mounting feet will see.

good video. but you should have gone deeper into the ratings of shackles, pullys and hooks etc. remember WLL. electric motors, rpm, gearing, torque then hp. more hp is great for a dragster. torque/gearing is better off road.

How is it not more dangerous to use a steel wire, when it can snap and hit people? Yes, you can run a winch on a single battery, but all off-roaders I see recommend that you have 2

You gotta be kidding me, don't use your winch to live your roof top tent? The winch is pulling vertical no matter what in a sense, because it passes through the fairlead before changing any direction. When you pull a vehicle at a angle? different direction than up? except for that damn fairlead agian. behind that fairlead the winch is still kept within its operating bounds. and if a winch rated as 3500 4500 8500 or 12500 lbs cant lift my rooftop tent and hold it, why would i trust my winch to hold my vehicle on a hillside? using a winch to lift a car straight vertical is less strain on the winch, than pulling it up a hillside with no traction, because your lifting a fraction of the weight with no drag, whereas pulling up a hillside is all the weight with additional drag on the vehicle, not to mention obstacles to pull over, stumps, rocks etc. Started out as a good tech vid, but you lost all credibility with this. (and not even mentioned is the winches manufacturer underrated weight capacity for safety reason, so people DONT push it to its max limit.....well i guess i just mentioned it)

I think you missed the point or perhaps they didnt explain it clearly. a winch does not have any mechanical to lock the drum if the clutch fails. it will free spool. if your winching a vehicle there is someone in that vehicle and the vehicle has brakes. yes there are situations where if the clutch fails under a winching situation a vehicle will roll , etc. A hoist works on a totally difference premise as the drum is loaded and if something were to fail it wont free spool. so if you are lifting your roof top tent with your winch and something happens it will fall to the ground. where as a hoist wont. it comes down to use the right tool to do the job sure it works fine. but it wasn't designed for it.

Gloves help in all situations is a lie they greatly decrease feel and accuracy. Use common sense and dont touch something you shouldn’t. Gloves also increase your chance of getting snagged on a line which is a safety issue. If using steel line there a good idea but I well not use them for synthetic rope.

"dampeners" are a myth. They do NOT make a steel cable drop to the ground, it becomes another projectile.
