I like that the recovery bag is a backpack. Most are a duffel, but you may have to scramble up a hillside to get to another vehicle, and that’s harder to do with your hands full.

When you connect to a hitch shackle, if you rotate hitch 90 degrees so shackle swings left to right instead of up & down you prevent side loading of shackle.

If you do that then in the case of hook point failure it will not drive into the ground?

Brand new to winching here! This was an excellent video but I have one question…are you in neutral as you pull yourself up the hill? What about when you’re pulling someone else? Is it parking brake only? I’ve heard so many ways to do this but I’d just like the right way so I don’t destroy anything.😂

thanks for the great info, Justin! I was wondering, why bother with the clevis hook at all? It sounds like an error-prone and often redundant piece of metal in the system. Why not just wind up the bare cable with only a bump stop when driving, then connect a soft shackle or steel shackle through the thimble when the time comes to use the winch? I have a reinforced soft shackle, so the poly braid would be protected from any abrasions caused by running through the thimble, or I could run the screw of a steel shackle through the thimble. Both styles of shackle have a higher WLL than the standard hook. Thanks again!

That’s exactly what I was thinking and plan to do and it’s basically what the flat links achieve in a cleaner way. Is the 7:8 metal shackle stronger than those flat links? Some of the hawse’s have channels in them so the ripe can sit flat, wonder if that’s ever a drawback?

The shackles on the anchor points of the vehicule, do they also have to turn back a quarter turn? Or do you tighten them very hard? Cause you don't want to use your shacle while driving, right? I'm Dutch speaking so I hope I explained my question correct lol

Great video. how far was your remote cable plugged into the winch control pack? i just installed mine and it wont power. the bluetooth isnt working and the hardwired doesnt power up. it seems like the cable that plugs into the control pack doesnt go in that far. i try to push it in but there is about 1/4 to 1/2 inch it is not going in.

If you're relying on the strength of the cross member as the basis for the viability of the hitch attachment, why not just put the shackle around the cross member itself and corcumvent the need for that heavy block of metal?

Whenever I try a snatch block the line twists on me. Any Advice?
@gapatriot2199

Correction, you want your straps to be made of high density polyETHYLENE. Think Spectra cord.
@gapatriot2199
@gapatriot2199 Жыл бұрын
Correct. HDPE is high density polyethylene. There is no such thing as high density polyester. But actually what you want is UHMWPE which is ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene.

Grade 70 Chain 1/2" only has a working load of 6,660#, not sure I'd want to use it to pull off of, maybe use it to wrap a tree saver and keep it in place?
@NZDC69
@NZDC69 Жыл бұрын
You’re thinking of 3/8” chain, not 1/2”. 1/2” WLL is above 11,000lbs.

Good info. But that last one didn't make any sense to me. You didn't need two anchor points to pull your jeep straight ahead. Of course, I understand you were using that scenario to show the use of a snatch block to change directions. But, now if you had been winching the other vehicle backwards, it would have made sense and have been the proper technique. Am I right?

I love the video, great job! However, you speak regarding snatch blocks as in "gaining efficiency" and I believe this to be untrue. For every snatch block used in a winch scenario you lose effiiciency in relating to the ratio of feet/revolution of drum in other words it is my understanding that you gain a 2:1 MA which decreases the stress on your winch motor but you "lose" the distance per revolution of drum by half. Efficiency is not the right descriptive word here IMHO!
@ManuelHernandez-iz1jb
@ManuelHernandez-iz1jb 11 ай бұрын
Since you gain twice the pulling power in a double line scenario, the winch motor is only under one half of the load it would be under in a single line pull. This means you are pulling the same load with less power exerted by the motor (efficiency gain) and a faster winding speed. But yes, the travel of the vehicle being pulled is half per revolution of the drum compared to a single line pull, but it is able to wind up faster and longer without overheating.

why dont you just walk the winch around the tree and hook it to the line?

You rightly used the tree saver, but why not a tree shock protector? You didn’t show, but afterwards did you spray the tree sling line with forestry relaxer? Do you not have adequate environmental regulations in your conservative state?

There is absolutely zero mechanical advantage by placing a snatch block on your anchor(the tree)

Correct! Most people don’t understand how mechanical advantage works. The first example is merely a change of direction back to the load which serves no purpose
@peterstolz7306
@peterstolz7306 7 ай бұрын
You are absolutely correct. The snatch block needs to be attached to the load side of the pull. If it's on the anchor side and you pull the line 10 feet, the load will move 10 feet. If you put the snatch block on the load side, you'll need to pull the line 20 feet to get the load to move 10 feet, but the force required to pull it will be cut in half.
@1wheeldrive751
@1wheeldrive751 7 ай бұрын
Wrong. With the pulley on a fixed point, and both ends of the winch cable attached to the moving load, you will get a 2:1 mechanical advantage. When you pull 10 feet of winch cable in, the load will only move forward 5 feet since it needs to take up 5 feet on both sides of the pulley.
