140 FPS in Microsoft Flight Simulator | RTX 4090 & DLSS 3 tested in 4K, including PMDG 737-700

I was impressed by how little artifacting I witnessed, signs and nameplates all good, a little on the rain, but that is evident in DLSS 2 anyway. A great start for DLSS 3, holding much promise for the future. Note DLSS 3 is not compatible with VR at the moment. Frame rates will be limited to the maximum refresh rate of your monitor, in my case 144Hz.

No visible artifacts because the "AI" generated frames are based on two already rendered frames, so it's a "simple" matter of inserting an interpolated frame in between. And this without ANY help from the CPU at all. DLSS 3 (and future improved versions) are the future. No doubt about it. Incredible technology!

I have a 5800X3D and RTX4090 and I can tell you was well worth it. The frame generation takes fps toa whole new level. I use TAA instead of DLSS because it makes the screens blurry. I'll wait till Nvidia releases the DLSS update but for now I get 120+ fps at level flight with Fenix A320. The game is maxed out at 1440p. Even on the ground I get well over 60 fps at a major airport with dense traffic. The card is a beast you can't go wrong!

Was flying around Cyprus recently, went into graphics settings and noticed my terrain level of detail was set relatively low, like yours was, compared to my Ultra settings. Turned it way up and was blown away by the difference in the terrain of the island. Since then, it’s become THE most important setting to me.

LOD has always been the prime factor for quality of image (and FPS killer) for under powered systems. Going past 200 LOD is possible now because the cards have finally been given larger VRam (16 -24GB) when 3-4 years ago it was typically 11 and maxing out. The CPU side has just discovered this with the much larger cache being provided on new CPUs. That is one of the big factors in the 13900K improved perf over the 12900K (along with the jump to DDR5). Interesting to see the correlation with Ram (in all its forms on a system) and the recent performance gains.

I’ve had every iteration of MSFS, and in all those years, I’ve always tended to avoid NYC, London, Paris, and Tokyo because the frame rates were so poor that even my usually high end flight sim rigs felt underwhelming when flying study level aircraft. The 13th gen CPU, the 13900 coming next week, is going to be the first time that is all about to change. It really is a great time to be alive.

Very nice I had i7 8700k and was stuck at 30 FPS Max at 4k ultra on my 4090 so just upgraded to i9 13900k so looking forward to playing the game at well over 60 fps in all its glory.

That upgrade will be a massive jump in performance (especially if you managed to get fast DDR5 Ram). In a week the new DDR5 7200MTs 32 clock ram should start trickling out and it is giving 100 -105 MB/s bandwidth where DDR4 3600 was hovering around 60 MB/s. to the CPU. All tests/reviews so far indicate a 4090 is being held back "cpu bound" by all but the latest CPU/ram combos at 4k which is were majority of flight simmers want to be in MSFS.

DLSS 3 will be implemented on 2000 and 3000 cards as well, but it won't have the same efficiency because the 4000 has extra hardware for that function. Right now it's one of the most important driving factors for 4090 sales, so Nvidia will likely wait a good while to make it available to everyone else with an RTX card.

This demonstration is very convincing! Thank you very much! I understood that latency could be an issue with DLSS 3 in VR, but apparently it isn't. I can't wait to receive the Asus TUF gaming RTX 4090 and experience it for myself! I am currently using an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and if necessary I would consider upgrading my rig to an Intel Core i7 13700K or AMD 7000 X3D that is expected early 2023.

What I am seeing is MS/Asobo needs to work on thread optimization to allow for better GPU usage. The nice part is that your space heater isn't going at full tilt, but there is still room for about 30% more performance gains. Maybe when direct access to the gpu comes out, it might fix these issues and reduce latency as well I hope.

Dlss 3.0 is a great feature. For me mfs runs 50-70 fps in 3440x1440 resolution on ultra without dlss above New-York city with 4090 and 5800x. Then I use just frame generation tech and get 100-140 fps without noticing any visual glitches. Now I hope this feature will also be added in VR mode also

Although frame generation does boost fps by almost half, it also has downside. When inside cockpit and panning views quickly, there is a flicker that occurs in the image. It looks like a screen tearing effect. Also, DLSS has a shimmering effect. So at the moment TAA is still the best quality you will get and personally, I didn’t get my 4090 so that I can get 100 fps with image issues. I’m happy with 60 fps and rock solid graphics quality.

Try enabling vsync in the nvidia control panel for flight sim only. I believe the vsync in game may be greyed out, well it is withing spiderman remastered. So forcing it on in control panel then syncs fps to your monitor refresh rate.

Thanks for this highly anticipated review of the 4090 in MSFS! I'm also the proud owner of a 3090, but that DLSS 3 frame generator is making me mighty jealous. I've no plans to upgrade my GPU for a few years, but I'm already excited at the prospect of future GPUs rendering MSFS at even higher framerates. The days of 30 fps flight simming are certainly going to be behind us, and even lower end cards will be able to run MSFS better than my 3090 does now. Exciting times!

I have an almost identical setup to yourself, and am using the same beta version. I have found the blurry displays using any type of DLSS is still too much of an irritation to ignore. I get almost the same results, with much sharper cockpit displays using TAA, and frame generation on.

The "fake frames" of DLSS 3 do not help for "fast twitch shooter" games because of the slight increase in latency between what your eyes are seeing versus what is happening in the game engine. For those games, the difference between 40fps versus 80fps of "true frames" is a 12 millisecond improvement from something happening on the screen to the player being able to react. The frames generated by DLSS 3 don't impart that advantage to the player. But for a flight sim, it's perfect to smooth out the visualization.

I just made the difficult decision to sell my Mac Studio Ultra and move to PC, coming out of denial regarding it not being able to perform with gaming applications. I'm a flight sim enthusiast, flying heavily on XPlane. The PC that I will have next week has the 4090 as well as 13th gen Intel CPU, and I have had my hopes high that DLSS3 would deliver, given that MSFS (and XPlane) are CPU single threaded applications even to this day (the bottleneck). Your video has given credibility to the shift I have plotted, and obviously I will be putting MSFS on the new system. To be honest, this has very limited use for MSFS. The actual sim calcs are still running at the original frame rate which is really what matters in how the plane feels and flies. The generated frames don’t take in to account any actual control inputs and environmental factors. While the generated frames make fast moving action appears smoother, it doesn’t make much visual difference to a slow moving visual like MSFS. I’d put your money in to a faster CPU before I paid to upgrade a 30 (or even a 20) series GPU. The generated frames do smooth out VR a bit, but that’s a limited use case.

I would argue you don’t need more that circa 60 fps for a valid control input that would reflect RW input and response. What is lacking for many simmers is the frame rates to provide a smooth and seamless flight.

If you have a 4K TV, just play at native 60fps and enable the motion flow settings on the TV and it will do the same frame manipulation at 240 fake fps 🙂

Actually, interpolation and reprojection (extrapolation) are very different things. DLSS3 basically holds back the next true frame, generates an in-between one and then pushes both the interpolated and the truly rendered one whereas reprojection works without having the next true frame ready because in VR, you need lower latency above all else. Also, VR reprojection only works with fixed refresh rates since the constant frame interval allows you to know in advance how far into the future to extrapolate current motion vectors which you can't possibly do with variable refresh rate since you don't have a reliable timeframe to calculate towards. DLSS3 frame generation circumvents this by waiting for the next real frame and doing the interpolation between that new and the previous frame, giving visually better results than reprojection/extrapolation, however coming at the cost of latency. And this is the reason why DLSS3 is probably not for VR unless they make a miracle happen. Anyway, great vid! :)

08:10 - The interesting thing about Frame gen is that you can apply it whenever you need. To benefit from upscaling alone, you would need to be GPU limited, which isn't the case in the given example here where GPU is only at 50% usage. However turning on framegen would allow to get all the benefit, even if the computer is CPU limited. Typically game settings scale very well with GPU, but not so much with CPU. In the past, having poor CPU meant that you're kind of screwed, as settings barely have any impact then.

At the complex airports or inside the 737 cockpit, your 4090 is only loaded to around 50% so I'm probably going to pick a 4000-series which is 30~40% slower than the 4090.

Hi Mark, do you have a Gsync monitor ? If so, you need to have Vsync forced on in NVCP in BOTH the global and MSFS 3D settings for it to work properly and Vsync off in MSFS in-game settings. This makes a huge difference in smoothness. I have the identical 4090 and a 10900k.I am at 4 k and on SU 11. I find DLSS3 quality still gives noticeable blurriness of glass cockpit displays compared to TAA. I find virtually no difference in frame rate using TAA but much clearer displays. You can get around the blurriness by moving closer to the displays but it is not a natural position in the cockpit (I’m a real world 737 pilot btw). Anyway I have found almost the same results and the next huge uplift will be either 13th gen Intel or the 7800X3D from AMD.

@@SimHangerFS but you didn’t see a dealbreaker, that’s good. With DLSS 2.0 at first I thought the more blurry font made it too painful to use. It is more blurry but I still end up using it because the performance is much better. I think the type of HUD elements where you see an issue with DLSS 3.0 is eg POI markers floating in mid air. But I have those turned off anyway, I’m much more concerned about being able to clearly read G3X or G1000 fonts.

Not sure if the small MSFS update 1GB this week has anything to do with it, but i can see FPS in the 130-140's in developer mode now, obviously with DLSS 3 and Frame Gen on, i can't tell you how great it is to have the sim run so smooth with so muchhh detail, even rendering higher than 4k and downscaling still good FPS with TAA or even No AA looks fab!!

You're really good with MSFS-2020 , quick question: In task manager I hardly have any utilization of GPU or CPU (5%/10%) and heading into a terminal at LAX my frames were struggling at 25 to 30 , which was red-lining the FPS counter. I have the injector & GSX in community, that's it. Can't figure this out.

I have seen alot of artifacts for instance, inside the cockpit letters and text are harder to read with DLSS on. It feels like it has some blur on it. Yes it increases FPS but it looks in my case alot worse. I use the 2070 super and 9700k 32 gb ram.

Yes, me too with DLSS2. Asobo are aware of the issue and working on a solution. In SU11 (beta), it does seem a bit better, but not perfect.

@@KEITHGEE1000 select a monitor size to suit you. Recommend a minimum 120-144hz to get the best impact of the fps. Higher is better. 1440p or 4K. I’m a fan of LG and Asus.

Good vid. The big BUT is the cost of the card is way tooo expensive for what it is. I personally carnt justify it yet. Especially all the other costs for a bigger case and maybe a new power supply. My big suggestion to people looking for a new card mabe look at the 30 series jue prices drops. Also AMD are announcing ther new card very shortly so if it’s cheeper than the 40 Navidia hand may be forced to drop price or do something.

Maybe you specified and I missed it. But depending on what CPU you have, I would definitely hold off on windows 11. I have an 8700k and have been running windows 11 since February 2022. Just today after an update brought back a bug I had painstakingly worked through before, I decided to wipe everything and go back to Windows 10. In short, it was locking my CPU to 800mhz. Unless you have a newer intel cpu with e-cores and p-cores. I would stay away from 11.

Great video Mark. I just built a new PC for the sole purpose of running MSFS2020. Coming from a i9-9900k and a RTX 2080ti, I elected to go with the AMD 5800X3D and not the newer Intel or AMD. Since MSFS is still primarily a Single Core program, My research with fellow MSFS2020 user praise this CPU. Since my new 4090 Suprim Liquid is on back order I am using the 2080 for now and Wow! What a difference this CPU makes over the 9900. Can’t wait for my 4090 to arrive. Keep the videos coming. One favor - would you do a video on the selections you have chosen for RivaTuner? I have an Intel i7 5960X CPU, and when I replaced my old 980Ti ASUS GPU by the RTX ASUS Tuf Gaming 3090 OC last year, my FPS more than doubled, keeping my old CPU. So with DLSS3, the same CPU, but with a new Power supply for safety, it would be interesting to see the FPS difference, thanks to DLSS 3 synthetic FPS. What do you think? Only problem: how to find a 4090? I am happy with the 3090, but it would help having more FPS over densely populated area. I think we don't see much difference above 60 FPS, so I could raise the settings. I currently am on Ultra for most with a few on High and 2 turned off in 2 K, as I do a lot of aerobatics flying, so I need performance as the picture changes all the time.

Your cpu is definitely capable. Just a comment, if your mainly flying in 2K don’t waste money on the 4000 series, the 3090 is performing very well at this resolution.

Yes the 3090 is very good, but FPS can go low on some weird locations: it is like something is "eating" FPS on some runways, even not in huge cities... Saint Louis airport East of the city has this for a few hundred meters on a runway.
